The fear balrog had me on the run for a long time (did about 10 of my 41 HP every time he hit, which was most times). Then emerald serpents came out of nowhere and burnt through all my healing items.

Particularly annoying was when the balrog successfully cast fear on me despite me having a helmet of fear resistance.

Saithnar "also draws wraiths to your level???" HOW FREAKING AWESOME IS THAT???

Fear resistance is simply that -- a resistance. It gives +10 or something to your rolls, but does not confer immunity. I find myself often scared/paralyzed when wearing anti-fear/free action items with relatively low will :(

I'd have dropped saithnar straight away if it didn't also slay undead. :D
I nearly decided to drop it anyway when I started getting shadows at 400 feet. One time there about 20 turns between two shadows coming down the stairs, which considering their damage potential was very annoying.
Then I noticed I could one-shot them, and stopped caring.
Oathwraiths became about as annoying as shadows were a couple levels later, and after one bad experience I decided to run away from every one I saw. Near the end I one-shotted one, but decided not to start attacking them.

Oh, I'm not wielding saithnar in the dump, am I? That's because I put on dramborleg to attempt to kill the balrog. he wasn't around when I had a post-mortem look around the dungeon, so I guess he played tag-team with the emerald serpents and left the level. Most of the time I was wielding dramborleg.

Hmmn. I don't know what kind of protection those new Balrogs have. Depending on that, I may have stuck with Saithnar instead of going for the extra damage die :)

Saithnar definitely would have helped against those serpents :(

Anyway, I don't know if it's because of your videos, my not using wasting XP on smithing this time, good luck with items, the game being easier in the shallower levels, the changes to charge, or some combination, but this is the first Sil char I've played in months and it got a lot deeper with a lot less hassle than my previous ones (who all died above 500 feet, mostly earlier than that).

Great work! I'm yet to actually play a game with Balrogs in it, so I don't know how they play.

debo: I'm glad you like the Wraith-curse on Saithnar.

On 5.9.2012 23:00 Quendus wrote:
half: not amazingly well. Every other unique I met was trivially slain, whereas the balrog took multiple swings with saithnar to do one star of damage, and knocked off a quarter of my HP whenever it hit me (with fire resistance). Can't remember if I got to use dramborleg against it, but if I did it didn't fare any better.

On 6.9.2012 14:15 Scatha wrote:
The Balrogs are _supposed_ to be significantly tougher than regular uniques, so that when you meet one you may have to weigh up whether to run and perhaps leave the level, or try to isolate, buff with potions, and fight.

That said they're still fairly new, so we'll keep an eye on how they do and be prepared to tweak them.

On 7.9.2012 10:38 half wrote:
Yes, Scatha is right that our plan for Balrogs is for them to terrify the player and force many retreats, making it really satisfying when you finally meet one in a situation where you can slay it. So it might be working. Let us know if they are too easy or too hard compared to that, or if they are too boring -- they are meant to be exciting.
