This was a fun game, a 100% pacifist run, and the culmination of quite a few attempts. My initial plan was to invest in smithing early for the boots of speed, helm of brilliance, and stealth armour, and hope to luck into another forge early to make a stealth cloak too. The first part worked great, but I guess I didn't need the second. Its really thrilling, tearing around at breakneck pace, hopping stairs, and getting chased out scooby-doo style whenever some dumb orc stumbles into you.

The throneroom was quite frustrating, as I at first did not have enough song to put Morgoth to sleep. I had to wander around a bit, find a dagger of Feanorians, a potion of grace, and a couple thousand more XP before I was able to do it. (I notice in the log that I had spotted the Cloak of Maglor - it must have been under a dragon or something. Oh well.) THEN, I wasn't strong enough to cut out a silmaril with Anglachel! Had to wander around a bit before I could find a potion of Strength for that. Finally, I was able to cut it out and duck out without anyone spotting me. The ascent was quite frustrating without any revelations. Morgoth was a constant companion. But, he never got close enough to touch me, and I still made it just under 10k turns thanks to Lothien! Even the Jaws of Thirst were drooling like a sleeping baby with that much Song...

One last thing I want to say, is that I had decided to try pacifist after many frustrating attempts at splatting Dwarven Heavy Armour meleeists. However, the AI it seems is tuned to be more towards stealth play, and so that turned out to be an exercise in extreme frustration, with every appearance of a group-type enemy (orcs, easterlings, cats, WOLVES) being the exact same slogfest followed by the exact same chase-down after the retreating foes. My head sunk low every time I saw any kind of archer (and not because of their damage), and I despaired every time a worm appeared on the screen. Ah, you noticed me clanking around from three rooms over and so you decided to spawn 50 friends to guard the stairs? Ah, that's just great... and while green and violet are annoying enough by themselves, when this happens with shadow or nether worms, it can be a shift-Q situation. And so while I think victory would be possible with my build (I was able to get to 950 ft twice before getting clobbered by a different balrog each time - just need a bit more luck with weapons), I just don't have the patience for it any longer. The game just stopped being any fun!

Very well done. Neat to see the smithing start made viable w/ pacifist.

Dwarves are not a great first choice if you're just getting warmed up to melee / nonstealth play. Dex is the god-stat in Sil, and Dwarves are horrible at it.

Try a Noldor (Feanor) with the same style, and you may enjoy it a lot more. I've tried to play Naugrim several times and I always find it tedious. I like even the Edain more.

GermanJoey: Grats on the win. Interesting start, I wonder if it saves XP in the long run, often you have to take many more song abilities if you don't find a sharpness weapon so that's why I prefer Doriath usually.

debo: I really like Naugrim. Their dex isn't so awful, it's easy enough to get 3 with a Nogrod or 2 with Belegost - 2352, 3252 or 3341 are pretty good stats. I prefer the jewellery start with them. With two +1 rings of acc and axe proficiency you are using a battleaxe with out any penalties - and it's cheap enough or free to get weaponsmith along with jeweller to make it.

Generally I leave smithing there with them however, perhaps making +2 rings or an amulet of con, but I don't care to do much more smithing personally.

Thanks for the tips, fellas. Maybe I'll try melee-centric again, once the Crawl tourny is over, with a Feanor (heh, all 3 of my wins have been Feanor, and I had been trying to break away from this crutch...). I also guess my stats were a bit screwy with my Belegosts - I think I had been doing 3/0/6/3, with jeweler making a ring of evasion and ring of protection. Maybe I'll try them again with 3/2/5/2 and accuracy rings...

clouded: Yeah, my primary motivation for picking up smithing was to save XP. My many first attempts usually splatted ~300ft-350ft by accidentally ramming into something in the dark and then getting trapped in a hallway. However, that meant I either needed extra investment in Perception early for Keen senses, or a helm of brilliance. Second, I found that running was really helpful, but I didn't want to waste points in evasion. (with the assumption that either I'd avoid enemies or die.) Third, the extra stealth from my armour was eventually worth about 3100 XP by itself. In other builds, and if you find a second early forge, you can get +6 stealth quite easily - that's a lot of XP to a specialist!
