Starting to get a bit rough down here. Lost count of the number of times I finished a fight with only 1 or 2 hp left. Nasty buggers running around. Good times. Danger really makes things interesting.

Putting danger on your smithing equipment is gutsy! I like it :)

Narsil is good -- especially with song of sharpness -- but you might want something with more dice to deal with some of the nastier monsters. A nice greatsword would go a long way at this point. You could even make a vanilla one with good weight/modifiers. (6lbs with some tweaks and your strength penalty removed would be delicious :D)

Yeah, a higher dmg weapon would be useful. Found a Mithril Greatsword of Fury that might do but it's a bit too light. Been hanging around 700'-800' looking for a forge but no luck yet. Wanted to make a few more things at least before getting to Morgoth so hopefully I'll find a few before 1000'. Putting danger on my smithing eq was a bit dicey but I like it.

You've put a load of dex penalties on your smithing equipment, but in 1.1.0 this no longer makes the item any cheaper to forge.

Found Gothmog's Hall at 900'. He was home along with a few of his buddies, notably Lungorthin and Thruingwethil. Plus quite a load of Troll Guards and assorted vamps. Not too mention the 4 Unrelenting Horrors and 4 Silent Watchers standing guard inside the hall. So, it was a rather nasty fight but managed to kill'em all and find some rather nice loot. Found Gauntlets of Gamil Zirak, Anglachel, and Ringil in chests and Hurin was sitting under a Great fire-drake. And I found two 4 use forges next to the hall. Now just need to figure out what I want to make.

I just used my Mithril Greatsword and Song of Sharpness. Did some nice dmg against them, just took a bit as they are tough bastards.

With my nonexistent stealth, everything wakes up and swarms me. In this instance, I managed to find a nice corridor with one end blocked by some rubble. Good place to make a stand. So, just waited and let'em all come to me and took'em on one-on-one.

I like Two-Weapon fighting. Morgoth went down fairly fast. First time killing him and grabbing 3 Sils. So, even if I die on the way up I'm happy.

Throne room was full of Unrelenting Horrors. Must have killed at least 10 or so in there. Buffed up and raged. Bunch of various Ancient serpents breathing on me took care of a bunch of the riffraff. Once the immediate area was cleared, Morgoth didn't stand much of a chance. Anyway, now to finish clearing out the throne room and escape.

I dunno that this guy would have needed much more strategy than 'stand firm and vanquish' :) very impressive.

@clouded - Yeah, some nice finds.

@Hugo - I came down the stairs into the throne room. Buffed up (Str/Dex/Con/Gra potions) and ate a herb of rage. Began singing Song of Sharpness. Then proceeded to smack the crap out of everyone til they died. Doing about 20-40 dmg a hit stuff doesn't last long. With Two-Weapon fighting I was smacking Morgoth pretty hard, at least 20-40 dmg a rnd I think (wasn't paying too much attention to the numbers). Being permanently hasted helps. Used about 5 or so !Healing.

For the Gloves of Weaponsmithing, I had Weaponsmith, +3 to Smithing, Danger curse, and -3 Dex penalty. The Dex penalty does nothing in 1.1 I learned though. Learned Smithing tips on an older version where it reduced the cost IIRC.

@debo - Yep, my strategy exactly. Love slugfests.

You won the game in style for sure! How did you distribute your skill points at character creation?

Obviously, your distribution may be different. But, I'm curious. Thanks!

Very, very well done. I haven't played a smithing character in ages and now you've made me want to try it again.

I've always been hesitant to take both enchantment and artistry on the same build, and have tried to jump through some dangerous hoops to avoid it, but seeing this character and some of Psi's attempts, I might actually concede and give it a shot :)

On 6.12.2012 17:38 WildKhaine wrote:
Yeah, made a really heavy investment in Smithing pretty early with this build. Grabbing Artistry increased my chances of surviving. My Melee/Evasion were really low for most of the early-mid game. Only survived the mid-game by taking Song of Sharpness. Was pretty weak most of the game, barely survived most encounters but it all really came together right at the end. Most of it due to some really nice artefact finds.

@debo - Kind of funny but I got the bug to make this build after watching your stealth archer videos on youtube. Saw some of the cool stuff you can do with smithing and just had to make one. Spent a bit of time looking over Psi's awesome builds and this was my attempt. Did much better than I thought I would.

On 7.12.2012 00:06 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
@Wildkhaine - With this winning accomplishment, you surely joined the rank of players like Psi, who are able to kill Morgoth without Archery and Stealth. Mad respect!

On 7.12.2012 00:20 WildKhaine wrote:
@Hugo - Thanks. For me, melee builds like this are pretty easy. They fit my play style very well. Playing a stealth and/or archery based char would be much more challenging for me. I like to walk up to things and slug it out. Nice and simple. Kill them before they kill you.

On 7.12.2012 01:19 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
If you're up for a challenge, try a Melee/Evasion/Will only build (which I always brag about).

@Hugo- I won with a build sort of like that. Made it out with 1 Sil, disconnected stairs/ironman challenges. I did put 7 into Perception and grabbed Keen Senses/Lore-Master. It was a fun build, wouldn't mind doing it again. Be interesting to do it with just Melee/Evasion/Will.
