OK, I got tempted into a copycat dragon, but I'll do crystal rather than law.

I do agree that dragons start rather slow. Early on, its hard to get more than say 40 or 50 damage per round, and with an AC below 40, life is tough. At one point I was panic teleporting on DL18 of the orc caves, ping ponging back and forth from packs of monsters. Having killed 100+ monster on the level, it seemed like their were still several hundred more to go, including many I could just no way handle. Like Carrions, that are fast, and hit for about 40% of my hp in a single round of melee. And Hippogriffs are similary. As is Nar the Dwarf. And those were the solitary guys. Never mind Shagrat whose probably a bit tougher than all those guys and spawned with about 80 of his closest buddies. And Hellcats. And ... And ... Oh, I forgot the Umber Hulks. Yeah, I burned thru 20 or so ?Teleport and was lucky to have them at that point in the game (Farmer dropped a 10k life weapon). Plus all my !CCW. Sigh ...

But now that I've got a few key rings, I'm starting to gain some traction. Damage output is still about 70 or so but my AC is now 100 which means I can finally survive as a melee character long enough to beat down the amazing monster swarms.

Of course, my early stat boosts really discouraged me, coming up 1/100 and then 2/100 from the elusive 3rd claw attack. But I've since surrendered my starting baby stat rings, so now I no longer feel so bad :)

But for player dragons, I find the evolution of them a bit weak. You expect more of a power-up as dragon.

Also the breath weapon stuff should be a main weapon for a dragon, it's scarier than their melee (untill you get enough resists). But making it cost your life makes it less useful (in my opinion, but I don't like hp-as-sp kind of abilities in general.). Monsterdragons don't die either using their breath. I would make them cost mana, but just give them not a lot of mana so you can't go berserk with them.

Some of the new monster races do use SP (Lich, Demon, Angel, Beholder) and for those, I think it is more flavorful. I'll think about this a bit ... Perhaps a new MP mechanic is needed (for monster power) that behaves the way I think it should. But I actually do like the HP mechanic. As you breathe, you do actually spend your physical power a bit and become weaker, and this nerfs shoot and scoot mechanics.

As for breath as primary weapon, that definitely can be the case for most dragons. Elemental dragons can breathe for up to 900hp and even at an early point in the game, their breaths are formidable as they get a much more favorable damage percentage calculation. For dragons whose breaths actually work in the end game, their power is toned down quite a bit or else nobody would play an elemental dragon (Elemental dragons also get branding on their bites!). Still, I'll be able to breathe for 450hp of shards damage in the end, which is fairly powerful, moreso than a wand of rockets. I'd hesitate to make damage much more than this, though I could probably be talked into 500hp (or perhaps a better damage calc so that you can breathe at full damage for longer as you spend HP on your breaths).

As for powerups, they are designed to be on par with other player classes, perhaps as powerful as monks (well, maybe not quite that powerful). I really think they are OK for the endgame, and the early game in Poschengband is deliberately meant to be interesting, rather than something you breeze through in an hour or so. I would be willing to move evolution to L35 for certain dragons if L40 is just too long to wait.

The design I went with is a bit different than Posband. One mistake that variant made, IMO, was to tie player melee attacks to their current form. So you were stuck with wimpy melee attacks as a drake until suddenly *bammo*, kick butt greater wyrm melee. So you went underpowered to overpowered but eventually, just having 4 melee blows made you end game underpowered for melee again.

For Poschengband, the design is deliberately different. On the one hand there is evolution to a new form, which generally brings new talents, new resistances and powers, and better stats/hp. But for dragons, your melee is similar to how things were in Drangband (which was a much better design, IMO). Your tooth and claw gradually improve in deadliness as you mature (tied to experience). I've added increasing weight mechanics as well since, after all, you are growing bigger! And I can't remember what Drangband did for the blows calculation, but using player stats is the obvious way to do it. Otherwise, physical stats lose much of their importance. Of course, AC improves gradually with level as well, rather being lumped up into all or nothing evolutionary steps.

So one should think of playing dragons as similar to playing monks, except that you actually start *much* faster (Monks are stuck with just 1 blow until CL10ish and 2 blows until CL20ish ... Dragons can have 3 attacks out of the gate!). Your melee will improve (gradually) as you gain experience, and evolutions, while nice, are not as dramatic as they were in Posband. Perhaps that makes the game less fun? I dunno, but it is much easier to tweak balance the way I have done it. Plus, I really just miss playing Drangband :)

As for early power, you really need to find good rings of damage. You are OK without them, but stack on 4 +15 damage rings and you will roll most monsters for quite some time. I'm just not sure where they might all be hiding, as I can't seem to find *any* this game.

I finally caught a break with Merry's cloak from an Ogrillon. And the damage rings I've spotted have been rings of something else and damage (low pluses) from the BM. I finally splurged 100k on this Resistance and Damage (+5) since that is just a really nice ring. But I've passed on all the sustain charisma and damage rings, etc.

As for testing out dragons, I think I will leave them as is. They are rather powerful and forcing some of the "better" choices to wait longer for evolution is a good thing. CL40 is probably OK.

The one thing that might need addressing, and this goes for all monster races, is that it can be difficult and frustrating to actually find wearable equipment. For dragons, this means cloaks, helmets and rings for the most part. I found gobs of stuff I just couldn't use! I might need to do something about this ...
