I've tried the same build as my other recent character.

Lost a few of these early: several didn't make it to the first forge (finding armour a key component of survival), and several more fell to orc packs (a Gondolin weapon seems to help here; maybe there is a version which takes Elbereth).

Since then Werewolves gave me some close calls but I've otherwise been okay. I'm being pushed down by the turn clock, so I won't have the time to forge vast amounts of gear, but I think I have chances.

The Elessar has been useful for me for quick recovery of health and more importantly voice. In fact just now I've been in fights where I run almost out of voice, so slip past the enemy, stop Singing, and retreat for a few turns to gain enough voice for Mastery and Sharpness to finish the job.

20+ song was where I started to feel invincible with mastery. Your will is really atrocious though, I seriously hope you don't wake up any dragons or that's going to get ugly. I guess you can always switch to that kite shield.

Fear isn't so bad, but do you stop singing when you're confused?

Regen is super powerful with song, I discovered. I kept my regen amulet as a swap.

Nice robe :)

Oh yeah, and if you get that far -- watch out for nameless things. They're actually really dangerous to this build if they get a hit in, and it's hard to predict where they're going to move / when they're going to attack you.

You are probably going to need to weave trees with mastery once you get to 900' too, no? Gwathrauko seriously rain on one's parade if they show up when one needs to be singing mastery and actually seeing the thing you're trying to kill :)

Buffing Will sounds reasonable. There are some abilities that could be very useful to pick up, too (Poison Resist, perhaps Critical Resist; Mind Over Body would let me use the Elessar more full time).

I'm getting a bit worried about my lack of fire resist. If I find another forge that will be high on my priorities.

I don't think Confusion stops you from singing. Entrancement would be very bad, but I do have Free Action.

Thanks for the warning about Nameless Things. I've made a mistake of engaging them with strong characters before, can stay well away this time.

Re. Trees: that's why I took Listen. :)

A bit deeper, a bit stronger. Left the Kite Shield of the Swan for one of Frost, as I really thought I needed some fire resistance.

At the moment I'm just about to fight Maeglin and Turkano -- two high Will enemies. I have quite a bit of experience to spend. I had been waiting to see if there was a forge, but spending it ahead of this fight also seems reasonable. Any ideas?

I murdered Turkano's host without him getting a single turn when I had that much song. (I had subtlety and a perfect-weight Nargothrond longsword.)

Maeglin was harder, but you have sharpness so it should be easier for you.

Although, your evasion and protection are both worse than mine were... I'd definitely drink !Con before each fight if you can afford it, just to give you some wiggle room if things go badly.

On 20.7.2013 12:52 Scatha wrote:
Well, debo, you were right: Turkano and Maeglin didn't present too many obstacles.

I've just found an enchanted forge on the same level. Without further investment I can get to Smithing 32, and I have 10k experience available, so higher is quite plausible.

So ... I'm not sure what to make.

- A (+1)[+0,1d3]<+1> shield giving regeneration, fire resist, and a point of Con? (34)

- A (+1)<+1> set of gloves giving a damage side and Opportunist?

- A <+2> Amulet of Grace (30) and two <+4> Rings of Accuracy (31)?

- A new Crown (either with Mastery on it, or buying that from the Song tree)

- A nice weapon (my weapons seem a little underwhelming)

Any Morgoth-killing plans with this build? If so, I would somehow integrate Focused Attack + Concentration for more killing power via Smithing or via Perception tree.

On 21.7.2013 00:48 debo wrote:
With 1 str, why not a sharpness shortsword (not sure if you could swing a venom brand on there too)?

Then you could take subtlety and stab things to death. I know you have song of sharpness but that lets you sing mastery and something else (staying? este, which you already have?)

Or you could just skip sharpness and put some buffs / better sides / better melee and a cold brand

Is that 30-odd smithing score with Aule? Are you going to masterpiece anything? That would really determine what you build now

Do you have a plan for the escape? My escape with this character type was so bad that I just gave up out of sheer boredom (you probably saw it). I would say you could probably get a sil right now without much trouble, so your equipment should probably be targeted more towards the escape (maybe something that gives speed or exchange places, or both)

On 21.7.2013 02:53 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
Escape-wise, I think Sprinting and Exchange Places are essentials. Just imagine getting cornered against permanent rocks by Morgoth...but then, you'd remember to use Exchange Places!! I always forget in the worst possible cases.

Had some fun making 'Snowflake' and 'Obedience' on that level, and raced to finish to get one shot at 950ft before going to the bottom.

I subdued Delmereth, and thought therefore I'd go with that and a shield. I subsequently found a gorgeous Greatsword of Shadows, which should be perfect for this build, but unfortunately only after crafting myself a lovely shield. I might have made some speed-granting boots instead if I'd had that sword.

One last level, then down, I guess. I think my Song should be enough to freeze even one of the Valar ... which is convenient. I can't remember if that stops him regenerating too. If not I might need Rapid Attack or something to help do damage fast enough.

Looking mega strong!! Even with will 25 I'm guessing morgoth will miss the majority of his turns, so this seems pretty foolproof. Concentration was a great addition, with rapid attack you should be in good shape to take him down with sharpness as minor theme.

Wouldn't the greatsword of shadows given you light radius 1? I know you have listen, but radius 1 light is... terrible. I hate playing that way.

Just don't get surrounded by Gwathraukar or 'darkness' monsters of any kind.

He has Listen -- it's not quite so bad :)

I finished. With Listen, light radius 1 wasn't a problem (though for exploring I often used 2).

I'll note I put about 3 more points into melee at the beginning of the ascent, to make killing things faster, but this was totally unnecessary.

Overall I was very strong. Morgoth didn't get a turn to act when adjacent to me, and he fell reasonably quickly too.

Things which made this build strong:

- Song of Mastery. Obviously the cornerstone of the build. By the end I couldn't really take on anything without it.

- High Grace. As well as caring about all four Grace-based skills, high Grace is the route to very high Voice. In turn the very high Voice score meant I could basically sing all of the time.

- Woven Themes. Song of Sharpness was a great second song here, but Elbereth (or Slaying?) instead would still have been good. Even when I first got this, a minor theme of Sharpness was halving their protection, and by the late game I didn't notice armour at all.

Listen was great as a route to not bothering about light radius. Smithing was very good at giving me powerful items as I needed them. But these were subsidiary to the above.

Amazing! I was actually worried about your damage output vs. Morgoth. What weapon did you use? Mastery didn't really freeze his regeneration, did it?

Wow! Every time I checked up on this character I would cringe at the evasion/protection scores. Ballsy!

On 22.7.2013 19:51 Scatha wrote:
No, Mastery didn't freeze the regeneration (I actually tested this against Dagorhir).

I used the Longsword of Shadows against Morgoth, to be sure my Song was high enough. I used Aranruth most of the way up, for the extra light radius.

My damage was actually easily high enough: about 2x(+33,2d11) with Concentration and a potion of Strength. Even as a minor theme, Sharpness meant he would only get about 2 from his protection typically.

HM: Really my defence scores were pretty redundant by the late game. But I did put +2 Con on my shield just to guard against mistakes!

Good shit with the Mastery build. Certainly a great one to follow for the future Morgoth-killers or even single Sil winners in general.
