I've had a pretty smooth start so far ... nothing super powerful early on and my Wargs reward was a mere +1 con (for +2 hp total). In fact, I had a really hard time getting fire resistance which was mildly alarming since my last dragon died to a lone archvile who quadruple fireballed. So I stayed shallow quite a bit longer than I would have liked, but eventually landed a nice Defender ring. And then Azog dropped a sweet cloak :)

Pro Tip: If you plan on reforging, save up those average rings and amulets!

I finally broke down, gathered my feeble reserves of courage, and took on The Cloning Pits. The quest went rather well, but dragons need to learn to ignore unusable artifact showers. No, jewelry is the key!

Also, my second !NewLife repaired my poor starting life rating, netting +100hp and even let me keep my 18/130 Con. Sweet. And my breath has grown quite powerful, though I still lean heavily on melee.

Dragons are a bit OP in melee but this is made up for by the herculean struggle to cover key resistances. Taking on Great Wyrms of Law with their *huge* shard breaths is very unwise without said resistance, and so is killing Amberites. I've had quite a few near death experiences so far, but my insane melee has made this game rather fun so far. My frosty breath gets scant use due to its potion shattering side effect and my fire breath (!) is rather funny as well. Plus, I must need a shower or something as mold seems to follow me wherever I go!

I just reforged Crimson for shards resistance at last. Next up is Julian provided I can garner enough fame for the task. Even with the nerfed reforging code, it is still extremely important for me and I am currently using 'Crimson', 'Shiva's Avatar' and 'Werewindle'. Still, I need more :)

Hypnos dropped Narya! I really like that fire immunity and the +1 weapon dice just about balances the loss of my +20 damage ring.

To celebrate, I took out the Yamata (3 !Healing vs 7 breaths) and Uriel (1 !Healing). Uriel had beaten down Tsathoggua to 0 hp so I'm not sure I deserve credit for that kill, but I'll take it anyway.

Hardest monster so far? Yamata, hands down. He even tagged me with unresisted Nexus at one point (down to 100hp) but it teleported me out of harms way and allowed me to regen hp rather than wasting my remaining healing. That guy sucks and should be L80 or so rather than L63.

Well, there is CL50 at last. I just completed a crazy level saturated with advanced dragon armies. In the end, Tselakus nearly killed me via a Black Reaver proxy (down to just 100hp ... again!). 20 or so arts on the level including the Jewel, but somehow I just can't seem to work it in just yet.

I have enough fame to reforge Thanos but lack the gold. And after Julian went bust I'm no so sure the result will be favorable. Maybe I should just dive and hope for some lucky rings?

I finally scrounged up just enough fame to reforge Crisdurian, at a cost of 2.64 Mgp, which I also just barely managed. The result was *another* source of electricity immunity, so I think I'll go back to Jack's cloak and decent stealth even if it means playing sans nexus resistance.

Should I go for one more reforge? Winblows is surprisingly worth 2.3Mgp ... If so, I better do it now before I fail a quest and irreversibly trash my fame. Public opinion is so fickle.

That was not what I had in mind for something that players begin to have access to around CL32 or so. Compare what one needs to do in Hengband to score a scroll: Collect all the wanted uniques, something I manage maybe 5% of the time, or kill The Metal Babble in the Arena (after killing a Great Wyrm of Power). Remember, no healing in the Arena, so this latter route is absurdly impossible.

But I still like the reforging mechanic, and monster races with unusual body types really need it. So I severely weakened the outcomes and I think the current code is pretty good. The high end reforgings are perhaps still a bit too strong, but the high gold requirements compensate this. Still, it is very easy to generate gold as Arjen pointed out. Personally, I use spellbooks, ego armors, artifacts, dragon armors and (eventually) stat potions for quick gold.

I'm not sure what the right number of reforgings per game is, but for me, I wouldn't want to generate more than about 10 Mgp and even that is a bit tedious. This gives room for 4 or 5 quality reforgings, but it still might be worthwhile to try a few weaker ones if all you need is a single resistance or two. Ideally, the player would find what they need ready made in the dungeon, but should this fail to occur for whatever reason, then reforging is meant to reduce grinding frustration.
