In the early game, the main problem of the Death Sword is low AC. Combined with lack of detection, this makes it very easy to die, and as mentioned, many resists are just hard to come by early on. Actually, confusion resist is hard for everybody (though Merry seems to be pretty common) but when combined with lack of detection, it's quite easy to get trapped. I had 3 or 4 such early experiences, mostly with confusing demons but also with the VM once (who isn't quite so deadly unless other folks are about).

So, priority #1 is to get some form of detect monsters. You can use scrolls and perhaps _DetectEvil, but eventually, you'll want a -MonsterLocation. The Arena has one, but it's not very easy to get to without FA (and the Hill Giant nearly killed me on my first go, forcing me to wait longer). So first, you'll need to do the Tengu and Death Swords quest for the westernesse reward. And for that, you'll need some distance attack since Death Swords will probably one shot kill you if you get next to them. I used 2 rods of lightning bolts, purchased at the BM for 16k which worked fine with a bit of resting.

After that, I was ready for Azog, and softened him up with a wand of fire balls. He was pretty easy, but with AC48 he could probably do 100 or even 150 damage in a single move, so some form of distance attack was required. He only got one move while next to me and didn't manage to hit as hard as normal.

And this game, I learned a new tip: Use -SlowMonster on griffons, hippogriffs, carrions, radiant kavu and trench wyrms. It works really well and all of these guys are difficult early game monsters.

2.5 hours and CL25 is about my normal time for completing the Orc Caves, so this guy is more or less on schedule. Damage of 106 per round is about par too, but like I said, you should expect the Death Sword to be a bit slower to build. Eventually, you'll be a melee powerhouse, but this takes time. Wait until your CL35 evolution ...

BTW, doing the Mimic's sans confusion resist is a good way to die, but I was feeling both fast and bold.

As far as options for confusion resist, don't forget about the egos that come with random resists (pattern, trump, chaos, defender) as well as rand-arts. Keep an eye on the town shops and you might be able to buy stuff as well. Actually, I was thinking that this build should get innate levitation, not for balance reasons, but for flavor. I mean, you're not exactly walking about the dungeon!

The Labyrinth was unexpectedly deadly, for some reason. First, I stupidly hung against The Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner one turn too long, and was down to 50hp and scared, but attacked anyway for the killing blow. I'm closing in on some key slays and brands, but my next evolution is approaching so I'm not sure I'll make it in time, or if I do, how long I will benefit. Slay Dragon in particular would be mighty useful about now. I can generally take out the Ancients, but sometimes Reds and Blacks cause a bit of trouble. Popping my damage from 210 to 340 would really help out!

Probably, I should be in the Dragon's Lair for better ego selection but I'll hang out for a bit more stat gain.

I think object and ego frequencies have changed since this class was first designed. Melee weapon drops are now 18% of all total drops ... I'm not sure what they were before.

Point taken on this being annoying, but I think the developer in me likes this. You *can* play without it and the thing about Death Swords is that once they get a resistance, they have it forever. So it really needs to be a huge struggle to keep the game "fun".

I don't think players should feel the need to completely avoid this, however. Grinding for triple disenchantment resistance is currently highly unlikely until, perhaps, the very end game. That being said, I'm willing to change the mechanic slightly for 3.3.4. Rather than having a single saving throw guard decreasing all of your essences, perhaps it would be better to save for each essence. That way, you might manage to protect your vital essences on any given drain. I don't recommend melee with any non-unique disenchanter. I won't spoil the odds of getting drained, but it is not insignificant. Against uniques, well, you need to decide if they are worth killing or not ;)

I pushed an interim build (3.3.4) in the usual spot (https://sites.google.com/site/poschengband/). I've made some alterations to the Death-Sword including the disenchantment change. I also added code for tracking spell stats and a few other minor changes.

* There's other ways I can see that could be used to balance for the way Death Swords play. For instance, it seems like super high base resists are rather early to come by, and same goes for ESP.

Sometimes it feels like I just tap monsters and they explode in a shower of object drops. This is crazy power and I still have quite a bit to build. The only drawbacks are poor AC, relatively low HP, a dearth of speed weapons (my luck surmounted this obstacle) and the disenchantment menace. On the plus side is 1k damage output and very strong resists.

It's rather amazing that Surtur dropped Twilight, which is now a quest item. But, as it had the AFC, I only got 5 speed essences on absorption.

I briefly lost my vorpal due to a casual encounter with a Lesser Reaver, completely unnecessary (It was asleep). 10 minutes to recover ... I've also acquired vamp at last (7 rune swords helped!) so I'm just waiting on 2 more essences of disenchantment so I can relax. In the mean time, I did kill Klingsor and a few other disenchanters, so I'm not completely playing it safe.

Vecna was spawned is some sort of non-moving uber storming posture, but I strategically destructed and then bull rushed. Once I killed a Lesser Reaver (risky!) then Vecna began to pursue, and it was quickly over.

I have yet to find Werewindle or Silver Chariot, so there's even more disenchantment out there. 512 egos absorbed.
