Trying something different: Dwarf Mage

Lucky, lucky, lucky. Just trying on first gloves in dungeon and they don't hinder my spellcasting!! {excellent}. Have to be FA gloves. First one I even saw in dungeon.

Luck continues. First shooter in dungeon: a short bow of power. What next? the One Ring just laying onto floor at 300'?

This is crazy. First unique orc drops Thengel. I haven't had this much luck in early game in ages. Nothing really insane, but still...

Just watch. The game's going to give you a bunch of good early-game stuff, and then not give you anything decent for most of the game.

Just curious Timo are you playing the official release or the last released development version? I downloaded and compiled the febuary dev version and I'm not having a lot of luck lol, it's been a slow grind around DL 30-40.

Mages are weak. Even with Dwarf extra dice and CON-bonus I still need to run from things I would easily kill with different class. I actually need to use rings of escaping to make sure that I escape.

Good Treasures? Where haven't I yet been..., hmm potion of enlightement. Unknown amulet: Amulet of ESP. Wohoo!!. Last room in there. Lorgan almost killed me. I'm not good with mages. Need stats. (1900')

Hey, Wormtongue boots. More speed, cursed, but who cares...oops, that was my only source to FA. No matter, I just avoid things that paralyze.

What's there, carrion crawlers? CHAARGE!!!

Hm, why does game keep saying me "you resist the effect"? Oh, sh*t.

Survived. Switched gear to cover FA.

@TheOther;

Basic vanilla angband. No development version, no special editing nothing extra.

Malak is right, I have already used more turns than my hobbit warrior did in entire game, and I'm hardly even at half-way thru. I just found my first INT potion. Raise in INT is due gain one-lose one potions. Every time those hit WIS it's permanent + to other stats.

I would love to use more CON but I also need to be able to distance-damage monsters, so INT is currently what I need to use (and just run away from too tough monsters).

ARGH! Gravity hounds that my detection didn't see. Must have spawned after I did detection. Escaped with 2HP and heavy stun. Need a break. Coffee-time.

Got Raal's. Now it's whole new ballgame. I start to feel the power of mage. I still need stats badly. WIS sucks, which means low saving throw, and I noticed that when afraid your failure rate goes up.

On 23.7.2014 14:09 Timo Pietilä wrote:
Close call with Gelugon. It had one turn in my view before I cast 0% failure TO and it used it to breathe shards. Only reason I survived is that I swapped in my cloak of protection with shard resist before dealing with it. From 461 to 33 in single turn. Worst thing was that in that vault where it was was only potion of DEX and absolutely nothing (useful) else, so I risked it for nothing. I hate Gelugons.

On 23.7.2014 14:10 Timo Pietilä wrote:
I also found Tensers. Pretty much useless to mage. I hate that. I should have access to all possible spells, useful or not. Pure spellcasters should have all spells in their type.

On 23.7.2014 20:54 krazyhades wrote:
I'm with you on that last. I sometimes toy with the mage edit files, mostly to give them the superior Rogue item detection spell, but I really hate how Tensers for mage is an at-home book that encourages bow-mage build (which I hate to play) and does nothing else.
