This is my first reasonable Steamband char. I finally gave up on Oculus Dei because I was failing spells all the time and getting surrounded by demons. This char has not had any problems since finding the resist bewilderment and free action rings. Diving as quickly as I can in a search for better equipment. At some point the lack of permanent elemental resists is going to catch up with me, but I pretty much always have on the temp speed/berserk/resists ability. One strange thing about this char is that I haven't seen one artifact yet! What's up with that? I'm on dl 30 and I haven't even seen the phial!!!!

Phial?? We don't got no Phial in Steamband. You won't find nearly as many artifacts as you are used to and the ones you do find will be mostly useless to you since you cannot use any armor outside of cloaks...

I'm going to be reworking the items system very soon - objects (in about 3 months) will hopefully get some very cool abilities - and yes, More artifacts. I'm only one man. :-) If you have any suggestions for artifacts please feel free to send them in! I'll really really try hard to remember to credit you. (And you're looking for a pocket lantern)

YASD! Was planning to update when I hit dl50. Unfortuntely I didn't quite make it. :( I really shouldn't play on less than 4 hours of sleep because I don't pay enough attention to the etheric automata breathing chaos on my three times. DOH!

As you can see I finally found a couple of artifacts. The photic illuminator was handy so I didn't have to carry flasks of oil anymore.

One major comment I would make is that the heavy armor penalty needs to be handled differently for Automata. I couldn't wear the best equipment I had because it lowered my mana so low I couldn't use my officer powers.

The high level officer powers are fairly cool especially Stiff Upper Lip. I don't know if the pets are acting quite right yet. One level I had control of 4 adventurers, and they would do nothing but stay in one spot no matter what pet command I gave them.

All in all it was fun. I think I will start trying oculus dei characters again now that I have a better feel for the difficulty progression.

I will check the numbers, but the heavy equipment not being helpful for using the officer powers is correct. It is part of the drawback of being an automata. It will be changed -> automata will have heat, and players will have fatigure instead of SP, but that's all in the future.
The AI is being replaced, and if you think pets are whacky now, wait till then.
I'm glad you like steam! Be sure and read the faq at to help you understand what's going on with magic. It's certainly possible to avoid summoning demons.
