One day I'll stop mixing up where to dump. Anyways it'll be 3 sils but an easily beatable time.

Think that's the first time I've seen someone do a hybrid character between melee and archery. Though it seems like you didn't carry many arrows so it must have been used fairly sparingly to get some free damage on fleeing or approaching enemies. Also dexterity by 500 ft. Wow, that's early.

I had about 4 stacks when I took flaming arrows, so I was actually burning them pretty fast to get them to the more managable 2 stacks. They're near empty at the moment because I used a heap bringing down a pair of great drakes. Though yeah, primarily melee with archery to soften things or thin out the herd.

It seems you started off like a rogue archer? Your first combat ability was finesse on turn 5743 (600 ft), other than flaming arrows (350 ft). Looks like you pumped nothing but perception, evasion, and archery early on. But you eventually transitioned into a more melee build instead of going pure archery.

Honestly archery seems like a really worthwhile investment since dodge rolls are halved. +20 melee equivalent to +10 archery if I understand it correctly.

Also any reason you waited until 100 ft to open your present? Not sure how present algorithm work but do you get better ones if you hold off on opening until later dungeon levels?

I opened it at 50'. Dramborleg doesn't id till you hit an orc, troll or raukar. I don't 100% remember the skill procession but I would of started 3 perception, 1 will, 1 stealth, the rest melee/evasion. Then pretty much melee/evasion up to round where listen is where I must of got perception then archery. I reckon I had 10 melee/evasion when I hit 10 archery (whery dex is) & I think I had about 12 melee/10 evasion where finesse/ZoC is.

so melee start. As soon as I had listen I lent heavily on the long bow using listen to position myself. Softened up Ulfang with arrows then finished him in melee, so that's probably where melee is starting to catch back up.

A ringrauko is 14 evasion so 10 archery is roughly 17 melee. The big bonus is the dex. 6000 xp for 10 archery & 1 dex. A 20/20 melee/evasion fighter paid 5900 for 2 melee/1 evasion. So you don't really lose melee long term, it's just the mid-game where you suffer as a melee warrior.

Hm, wouldn't have guessed by looking at your dump that you pumped melee/evasion. I'd imagine even pure archers would have to pump melee/evasion early on? There are no starts where you start off with bow and arrows, and you'll need a way to survive encounters with early orcs and wolves, through brute force, assassination, or sneaking around.

"A ringrauko is 14 evasion so 10 archery is roughly 17 melee." You lost me here. What does ringraukos have to do with anything? And where did you get 17 melee?

On 31.12.2016 23:40 wobbly wrote:
Pure archers can always take extra evasion if they don't want melee. A 5 dex feanor has a high base melee from dex compared to say a belegost, you can melee without any melee at the start. Or take stealth or sprinting & do the pacifist start. Or Versatility. That said 5 melee & charge is not a bad archer start, gives you some insurance for breaking various stone creatures later on.

Re ringrauko - I just picked an arbitary point. Half evasion is something like +13 against a vampire lord. It's +7 against ringrakuo & urauko. I've picked ringrakuo because they're pretty dangerous in melee when they show up, but very easy to deal with if you have archery & flaming arrows. Same with snow trolls (which are only +3 but easy to hit to start with).
