so melee start. As soon as I had listen I lent heavily on the long bow using listen to position myself. Softened up Ulfang with arrows then finished him in melee, so that's probably where melee is starting to catch back up.

A ringrauko is 14 evasion so 10 archery is roughly 17 melee. The big bonus is the dex. 6000 xp for 10 archery & 1 dex. A 20/20 melee/evasion fighter paid 5900 for 2 melee/1 evasion. So you don't really lose melee long term, it's just the mid-game where you suffer as a melee warrior.

Pure archers can always take extra evasion if they don't want melee. A 5 dex feanor has a high base melee from dex compared to say a belegost, you can melee without any melee at the start. Or take stealth or sprinting & do the pacifist start. Or Versatility. That said 5 melee & charge is not a bad archer start, gives you some insurance for breaking various stone creatures later on.

Re ringrauko - I just picked an arbitary point. Half evasion is something like +13 against a vampire lord. It's +7 against ringrakuo & urauko. I've picked ringrakuo because they're pretty dangerous in melee when they show up, but very easy to deal with if you have archery & flaming arrows. Same with snow trolls (which are only +3 but easy to hit to start with).
