The idea of yellow mage is many spells per turn (5ish of a basic low-level spell, 3ish of a level 40 spell). This is not terrible damage over time, although it really eats up MP. The secret convience of yellow mage (spoiler alert!) is it precludes almost all doubleturns when casting, so a heal when you need it is going to be when you're at 300 HP after a manastorm, not 100 HP after a manastorm and mana bolt. You could in theory do some serious kiting too, but MP never stops becoming an issue.

Death realm served its purpose, being really pretty crummy before the third book but taking a turn for the better with vamp true and later on darkness storm and death ray (obviously). Also of note is that you can get many casts of genocide/death ray before enemies can act, so the low power of genocide/the dice roll of deathray are less left up to chance. Anything to increase the chance of good outcomes, right?

The conspicuous issue was killing midgame demon uniques (malediction+devices was my best solution) and lategame enemies who resist darkness. Same thing, with enthusiastic starburst/disintegration usage when possible. One particularly memorable fight was against Sauron. He was stuck in a water area of R'lyeh with no escape, but the best offense I could muster against his darkness resistance was orb of entropy (3d6+75). So I chipped away at his 10,000 HP that way, with him occasionally summoning Nazgul but never overpowering me, since I could just flee when at low HP/MP. Death realm in a nutshell.

Oh, and the level 88 Oremorj fight was the only time I seriously had to scum for summons (should've waited for shard res, eh?). Zephyr lords and hounds wrecked him. The Raise the Dead summon spell is such that most summons spawn hostile, so it's not useful, possible, or desirable to routinely fill up the screen with greater undead - death school is more a blaster type.

Why the sorcery realm? Looking back on it, I have no idea. Everything except dimension door and door creation could've been (and often was) substituted. I'll only concede that no-fail teleport level got me out of some possibly imminent death situations (the one I remember most is some high level unique doubleturning for both 200ish damage and a successful summon monsters turn that brought in an ultimate magus(!) and accompanying chaff. Had I not tele level'd at that point, neither destruction, teleporting, nor genocide were guaranteed to save me from a manastorm+breath combo. Anyway, what's done is done.

Practically no melee this game - damage was horrible, accuracy was horrible, the only way to make it work would've been with a ring of combat. It also felt like very poor drops this game, but in retrospect it was just a lot of unneeded devices/books when I would've preferred equipment. Asclepius, Luthien, and the randart crown I wore from R'lyeh to the end were the only truly excellent drops outside of the endgame. Ceaselessly did I search to cover up 3 resistances I lacked for 80% of the game: sound, nexus, and shard. Sound and nexus aren't necessary to do well, but rshards really is something you want. Problem was, I couldn't find the right fit to incorporate rshards into my kit, and the limitations on gloves/total weight really makes things tough to the point I was at about 375 MP by the endgame before the final shuffle. Good thing worthwhile reforges still exist in 5.0.5!

The Serpent fight was fast and loose as usual - lots of summoning, lots of darkness storms, an unfortunate teleport into PGR's line of sight and eating a manastorm. Really stupid performance looking back on it, but I was never an intellectual.

Mages just "feel" really slow to play, even if they happen to be similar in total playtime to many melee types. All that macroing and MP management and kiting and teleporting really takes a toll. And their HP is just sooooo low throughout, it's like walking on needles just to get to the end. 400-500 by level 40, 800 by level 50, 900 if you make sacrifices to max out con. Casting ain't easy.

And a little secret (more spoiler alerts if you want to try yellow mage later). Since the class gets so many spells per turn, if you could manage to stack wizardry bonuses and pick the right realm (crusade maybe?) you could be casting 5ish damage spells per turn with big bonuses for practically no MP. Probably nothing astoundingly amazing, but keep it in mind.

So where are we at? Win rate: An acceptable ~4%. Post-level 25 win rate: A slightly descending ~16%. Until next time.

Nice win! Good point about how yellow mages are harder to double turn, much like archers or quickwalkers. I think Death's Malediction makes for one of the better opening offensive spells, as being a 0-radius ball lets it hit rearward enemies that bolts would not reach, plus it can't be reflected and applies some reasonable debuffs. But yeah it's not so fun between then and Vamp True land, and even so the realm is strong against the relatively more easy to fight living/dragons and weaker against the important endgame threats of Demons/Undead (well, there is genocide...)
