What's the old saying, "Bebear of bears bearing crossbows"? Something like that anyway. As usual have no idea about Sangband, decided to take bear-form & made no other real plans, so kind of ended up with a warrior by default. I like how my title is flailer, I think it's commenting on my playstyle.

Wasted a lot of time trying to kill Smeagol. I had a cursed amulet of teleportation on which wasn't helping

putting your skill points into every skill tree results in mediocre performance, its best to pick which skills you want to invest into before advancing a character, I tend to pick as few as possible so i can advance in my main skills much quicker. warrior types do not usually need to invest into a magic realm unless their is a certain special ability you want down the road.

On 8.6.2017 00:48 Malak Darkhunter wrote:
Also be very wary, Sangband holds hidden dangers and dangerous cursed items..some disguise themselves as good items until they are in your pack, high perception skill is your best friend.

Nature is paired with shapeshifting & 30 ha is enough for detect evil, but yeah I do have trouble working out what I can afford as I don't even vaguely understand the arithmetic. It'd be nice if S had a way to mock up characters to plan before hand.

I usually pick around 10 skills..1 or 2 weapon skills and maybe a launcher, edged weapons like swords or polearms are ideal for ghosts and blunt weapons are good for constructs like golems and skeletons. If you are a shapechanger perhaps consider wrestling as your main combat skill instead of the other weapon skills..it will save lots of skills points, and maybe go for 1 type of launcher that will allow you to upgrade those skills more quickly instead of spreading them out. I prefer throwing skills...there is some nice throwing hammers that return to you, like the artifact the throwing hammer of Mjolinir:)....spreading skills out to accompany a wide array of skills makes for slow character advancement and later on those skills get very expensive to upgrade...good luck and have fun!

Something weird happened with Nar, he got to with-in 2 squares of me & stood there while I repeatedly used lunge till he was dead. Even when he started "flee-ing", he was still just standing there.

Sadly that was a known bug that I reported several years ago with advanced warrior skills, it was supposedly fixed in the last updated source code, but I cannot remember if it was indeed fixed.

On 9.6.2017 01:00 Malak Darkhunter wrote:
It was commited as a bug and browsing the commits under the source it says "fix Lunge talent so that it takes a turn"....knowing that it was an exploit I simply decided to never use it.

Damn, maybe I can macro it with a wait at the end? Though that's a bit finicky with things like more prompts.

On 9.6.2017 13:21 wobbly wrote:
Re curses: I vaguely remember there being a cursed blanket that screws all your gear, was that Sangband? I'm a bit better at spotting curses then my perception indicates because of HA but certainly not good enough to spot cursed rings/amulets.

Re skills: Yeah I suspect I'm more spread out then is best play. I think in the end as long as I can still hit 100% jousting I'm not too worried.

Had hoped to get mouse-form on demand, same as the bear but nup, with 50 Nature/40 Shapeshift:
bear - permanent
troll - 64 turns
cheetah 91
mouse 157
serpent 128
bat 59

Also while mend self from nature seems ok-ish, by the looks of it you need a much higher nature skill for it to impress as more than a cure blind/confusion.

yes Sangband has blankets and Cursed blankets of protection..there are also terribly cursed artifacts and cursed wepons of Morgul....power level of 100 is the max. Yeah also beware of Potions of Death, I don't remember exactly what level they generate but I believe you are close.

Leon Merrick put lots of nasty suprises into Sangband to keep you on your toes. I always go back to this game because I love the custom character customization.Rogues are really fun with ability to set traps and Camlost made it possible to Dual-Wield...My last Character was a dual wield Dark Elf, with Forging Skills, I created to be Eol the Dark Elf. very very fun.

On 9.6.2017 22:50 wobbly wrote:
Yeah I looked at that one recently, just trying to work out how the no.'s work for power 100. This is further then I'd usually get. Probably because I keep trying to get a gnome alchemist going & end up blowing myself up.

I'm starting to think of this as a ranger. It's more melee then bow but otherwise it's the closest match.

Hmm, 24 witches. Sounds friendly. That'll be the last hard quest I'll take. Hopefully not the last quest....

Quests can sometimes be very tough to deal with especially if you run across some powerful uniques or the level gets bombarded with insects....mana flys and chaos tiles at deep levels can be very problematic, banishment is very useful for those types because they breed explosively and can overrun a level...you can if need be recall back to town while on the quest level if things turn unfavorable but only for a short time and then recall back down to complete the quest.......some players are good enough to keep doing quests all throughout the game...I on the otherhand used quests for the extra $ and useful items in the begining until you reach a deep enough depth to start finding useful items and then I stop doing quests and start focusing on killing uniques and clearing vaults.
also the ability to "I" invest in stores by giving them money allows them to stock better stuff.
