Gwarl begins with more unusual birth-options for a comp. Persistent levels, yes, that's interesting. Connected stairs is unusual for comps. The hated Selling rather than no-Selling, that's just downright mean. And knowledge of flavors, why, when ruins aren't known? That's just an odd choice.

Rockin' a Shovel of Digging almost from the start, and now rocking the non-priestly Nimthanc', too! A promising beginning! Probably clearing levels too much, as persistent levels (or as I call it-iron man light) scares me a little.

CL29 DL13 - Just found and quaffed a !Experience.

CL30 DL20 - What a level! Found Anduril, the Flame of the West - and since it's blessed this priest can use it without detriment. Can ditch the non-priestly 'thancs and Forasgil. Also found this level are Hurin and Rilia. Lugging then around to try and get their runes identified before dumping them.

CL30 DL30 - made it to Stat Gain depth by reading a couple ?Deep Descent. The quick 10 level descent was rewarded with a small +6 speed ring.

CL30 DL32 - amulet of ESP!

CL32 DL37 - MB6, at long last @ won't have to keep lugging stuff around for rune id. Natural Con and Wis both maxed. Turncount, however, is pathetic.

On 12.2.2018 07:36 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
CL36 DL50 - Halfway down. All stats have natural max except Int. Just finished a "superb" level, but really didn't gain much. Turncount already over 40k, so comp win is pretty doubtful once some of the really heavy hitters get going (e.g., PowerWyrm, Elliptic, etc).

CL40 DL64 - proceeding apace. Tending to go down stairs more rapidly now, due to my worry about turncount. Although with persistent levels, I may be leaving a bunch of artifacts behind. I hope I don't miss an important one.

I want to say you had some incredible luck with the early !exp and anduril. The speed and ESP can't have hurt, either. Looks like Amras also showed up fairly early on.

On 13.2.2018 14:04 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
The first luck was finding a shovel of digging on DL02. !exp on DL13 was a mixed blessing - I had to be very, very worried about stat draining for a long time. Anduril has been great, but until stat gain levels it mostly sat in inventory. Amulet of ESP at DL32 made me glad I risked a special room. Vault's, special rooms, and unique drops have yielded most of the loot, and most of the close-calls too. Portal has saved @ more than once!

On 13.2.2018 17:43 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
CL43 DL90 - Have been running down most every stair, pausing only to go after vaults or special rooms. Found four ! Experience that way in the last several levels. Have stopped here because on this level is a "necklace". I have a thing for collecting the Silmaril's found only in this artifact and in Morgoth's crown. By the way, isn't the Naguglimir under-powered as an artifact considering it has a Silmaril?
Inventory management has become very difficult.

Remember with persistent levels you can drop something and if you need it badly later go back and get it (at the cost of turns of course).

On 13.2.2018 21:13 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
What I don't know is whether an artifact that is generated on a level, but never fully identified because @ does not walk-over, can be generated again, or whether it is stuck on that level. I'm assuming the latter.

On 13.2.2018 23:41 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
CL44 DL94 - ?*Acquirement* yields Nenya and Elros. Inventory management is a pain, but it's a high-class problem.

On 14.2.2018 00:16 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
CL45 DL99 - Read ?Deep Descent on DL94 to go straight to guns on Sauron right away. Used a wand of stone to mud to create a long hockey-stick antisummoning corridor, filled it with runes of protection (glyphs of warding, for a priest), and pelted the Boss with every wand of drain life @ had found. Used over 30 charges until empty, then fired off two arrows for the kill. Now, to consider how to get enough speed and banishment consumables on these persistent levels for the final fight with the Big Boss.

You've got 100x as much XP as I do in 1/2 the turns. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. :) Is the secret just to dive fast and avoid wasting time exploring the levels fully?

On 15.2.2018 00:18 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
I generally don't fully explore levels. My MO is: explore a lot at the start to get a decent weapon; dive for stat gain depth, pausing for vaults and special rooms; explore a little more fully for stat gain; dive once more, again pausing for vaults and special rooms. However, I think @ is a little screwed now. Not enough damage output or banish/mass banish to take on Morgoth, and persistent levels means those may be hard to come by.

Debating whether to go down and almost certainly die, but preserve my turncount, or go up and try to get the necessary consumables and somehow increase damage output.

I too am finding that the static levels are a huge problem for actually getting *enough* gear.

On 20.2.2018 12:46 PowerWyrm wrote:
I'd say as a priest you're good to go. I wouldn't waste more turns getting banish scrolls as you can use Banish Evil and have enough manapots. In doubt, you can still go back up as the comp is not pure ironman.

On 20.2.2018 20:43 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
If banish were the only issue, I'd agree, but damage output of 272 is very low. Banish Evil means TO to Morgoth before casting, waiting for him to return, all the while he's healing. Probably faster than @ can deal out the damage. One step forward, two steps back with every banish evil.... For now, I can just wait to see if anyone gets a winner and see if I have any turncount buffer to try and improve.

Do you worry that your books of prayers will be destroyed? I've seen some people carry 4. Why do you carry 2?

On 20.2.2018 23:27 Ingwe Ingweron wrote:
I carry 2 copies of townbooks with a !k, and squelch them, unless @ get's fire immunity, when I reduce it to 1 copy. If a townbook gets destroyed, I unsquelch that book until I find a replacement. I find the risk that two will be destroyed before a replacement is found is worth the tradeoff of weight for more copies.

Thanks for the response. What are your thoughts on engaging enemies that can disenchant your equipment? What about enemies that you can't seem to overcome with DPS? Do you just give up on that level for the time being (or perhaps forever) and move on?

If I don't have rDis, I fight disenchanters from a distance, avoid them or TO them. DPS? Not sure what that means, damage per shot? Damage per round? Any monster @ can't beat I try to avoid or TO, but that seems obvious.

Just for reference, !g works instead of squelch to avoid picking up town books unless you really want them.

A massive sea of runes inside the medium "Workaround" vault, wands of drain life, arrows, and spells (prayers) of Dispel Evil and Annihilation. Skinned under the turncount, just barely. @ was utterly surrounded and standing on the last rune at the moment of the coup-de-grace!
