Necromancers have a rough early game and no mistake. They lack a good way to kill common evil enemies such as cutpurses (who embarrassingly killed one of my earlier attempts), kobolds, orcs and trolls. A ranged weapon seems to be the best way to get through this stage.

Maybe to make the early game less frustrating, necromancers could have a chaos ball attack that evil enemies don't resist. This ability could replace noxious fumes in the second spellbook, since druids are the poison specialists. As for the tradeoff, possibly the caster would have a chance to experience hallucination for a short time, or lose some health, either of which would be less irritating than waiting for poison to wear off after each fight.

The other difficulty is that many weapons and armor give +1 light, making them undesirable. Perhaps it's appropriate that necromancers have to get used to giving up on such items, rather than changing the items and inconveniencing other classes. It may be nice if empty lanterns of stealth or true sight were to occur occasionally, convenient for necromancers but not hard for other classes to fill.

I like the playstyle of fighting in the shadows, especially for experienced players who already have an idea of what might be out there.

Vampire strike can be really effective when it works. However I'm puzzled as to what causes enemies to be shielded. Sometimes shielding happens several times in a row, typically requiring shadow shift to back away, heal and hope for better luck the next time. Many common enemies also have their own light source, making it even harder to cast in melee distance.

Warg form at level 28 is a huge step forward, giving more than triple the damage with my current weapon. It also has no stealth penalty, unlike the druid bear and pukel-man forms. Casting disenchant becomes reliable about the same time too, which is effective against most enemies.

So with the hardest part out of the way, it's time to see how far this character can go. No time for overconfidence, though; I've already played two necromancers into the level 30's who both tragically died from poison dragon breath.

This is now the furthest I've gotten any necromancer. Have a good sword and making progress on stat gains. Still need a ring or boots of speed, poison resistance, and a S.Inv item (the Sense Invisible ritual works but is only temporary).

Looking forward to XL40 for Fume of Mordor. Not carrying around the 4th book until then.

Epic battle with Tselakus. Hit him a couple of times with Disenchant but then, after a !Healing only gave me about 1 extra turn, had to Shadow Shift away. Landed in the middle of a pack of sleeping hellhounds, which seemed bad at first. However, it turned out to be just the thing needed.

Switched to Azaghal for fire immunity, so when Tselakus came back, he and his summons kept getting hit by hellhound breath. Then when my character suffered damage, a few casts of Vampire Strike on the hellhounds restored health to near full.

After several shots of Disenchant, my SP was low. Did it require !Restore Mana? No! Tap Unlife quickly restored it while further irritating T. So, dancing around, restoring health and SP, I could have stayed there all day.

Eventually, I ran out of hellhounds, which might have been a problem except that Tselakus had run out of health.

A few turns later on that same level, I found a vault and was able to clear about 50 enemies with repeated blasts of Storm of Darkness combined with Tap Unlife.

Add Fume of Mordor to find just about any kind of item, and my necromancer is in good shape at this point. Not necessarily the most powerful character I've ever played, but feels well balanced and very fun at this point in the game.
