Since I am expecting to be down in the dungeon for a long time, I carried my Healing and Speed potions with me. The dlvl30's was a bust since the only summoner on the level was The Variant Maintainer, and Software Bugs don't carry items. The next step down took me to dlvl45, but it is pretty much all I could ask for: the level is very long and thin, allowing me to teleport troublesome monsters out of the way to one end, and the level had a Logrus Master, who summons Demons (but not Major Demons). The level guardian / quest monster was Hoarmurath, who also summons, but I definitely did not like the idea of breeding Major Undead.

I've been breeding (summoning) demons for awhile now, and it's been successful in the sense that I've gotten a lot of exp and a number of interesting items, while keeping a stock of summoners and without letting it get out of control. Unfortunately, none of those items have been stat potions so far. I think I'll slog along for a while longer, and see what turns up.

Obviously not. I also notice that Bostock's winner has an artifact lamp that does not appear to be reforged .. how does that work? Is it not lighting up for some reason, or is Bostock just accepting the visibility? Is a ninja unable to Hide from the Serpent, and so it doesn't matter in the final fight? Inquiring minds want to know ..

Thanks Sideways! I hadn't considered that - in Vanilla monsters only take offensive actions when they have LOS and target @ directly. I will say that I think the way frog does it is better from a game perspective (although it sucks for @).

I managed to buy a Fenorian Lamp of Darkness from the Black Market (pretty cheaply, actually). I still have no idea how to forge one. However, the fact that it actually reduces the light radius means I can now wear gear with Permanent Light (like Dor-Lomin).

Sideways knows the right answer, but my recollection is that Genocide and Mass Genocide work fine anywhere in the Dungeon (except within greater vaults, I think). I believe it is only the town Quests that disallow them. It makes sense, since one could simply one-shot everything in the town quest (except any uniques) with a single scroll of Mass Genocide.

The Oberon fight was lucky in many respects: Hellott emptied all the devices, and shot a lot of arrows, and while it did do positive amounts of damage, it was pretty slow. Eventually I was mostly using Nyusin to get in an attack, and relying on Kawarimi to get out. Or use Hit and Away if Oberon missed the return strike. This seems extrememly dangerous to me, because if (when) the Kawarimi fails, I could be up the creek without a paddle - badly damaged, and sufficiently afraid that I would be unable to Abscond. But Hellott got away with it. Oberon did not summon too much, and what he did bring on to the field was vulnerable to Destruction blasts, and I was able to clear them away.

I reforged several sets of gloves, hoping for something with +Con. I didn't get that, but I did get one with +Speed. I spent a lot of time reading the documentation and pouring over the source code to try and make up for my inexperience. And I got several important bits of info from others. Plus the Specter + Ninja combination is just so overpowered as to allow me to recover from a number of early mistakes. That, and killing half a dozen or so characters to start out with.

Hellott did not see any "fatal spot" messages against J. My understanding is that you do not get those against Uniques; I'm fairly certain I never saw a "fatal" blow against any unique character. Given that Hellott just generically hit the target a lot less often than usual due to the AC of J, I'd say he saw a reasonably average number of "good", "critical", etc. hits when he did connect.
