Another run at Elbereth-Delvings-Thresholds-Listen pacifist, switching to Song of Mastery to handle the throne room. Hoping to get a bit of advice on how to split my xp between melee, evasion, and yet more song before I attempt it.

I do kinda wish Song of Elbereth could just scare V so hard he drops the crown, like Song of Lorien, but freezing him while I try to knock it off is a good second-best.

You could later also try the 50k xp Challenge mode (which probably is easier than what you are attempting here) with a fixed amount of xp awarded up-front and then no more for the rest of the game. See game options on character creation. I like it for smithing and mastery builds

Tried the throne room and died, then accidentally quit before saving the dump.
I got enough song to freeze V almost every round (39 total), but just didn't have the melee to dislodge the crown.

Still, better than my previous best with this build. I took the time to sneak around and lock every door on the level and tried to shuffle serpents and dangerous uniques behind locked doors, then used song of elbereth to flush all the troll guards in the throne room up the stairs before breaking tension, which helped a lot with the crowding.

I'll give the 50k xp start a shot. Will certainly make the early floors easier.

I should probably adjust the Horn of Force to knock Morgoth's crown loose - it seems like it should provide a viable pacifist route to crown removal. It's definitely not optimal having to knock it loose with weapons on a non-combat character.

A bow is probably easier to hit Morgoth with because of the evasion malus against archery - if you had some Piercing arrows you might be in with a shot but even at that you're relying on criticals.

On 2.6.2021 03:32 Wiwaxia wrote:
A pacifist way to knock the crown loose would be much appreciated, but Horn of Force makes you stop singing for a round, which gets you pasted with a Mastery pacifist. (That's actually how this run ended. I wasn't sure if that interaction was already there and my last !Grace was about to run out, so I gave it a try and Morgoth 1-shot me on the following round before I could start singing again. Lucky hit on his part, mind, I'd survived a couple other attacks from him, but still.) It does have the advantage of being an obvious thing to try, at least.

I'll give archery a shot next time.

I'm serious about Elberething the crown off as a suggestion though, as much on principle as anything else. If I recall, you mentioned being interested in making Elbereth pacifist viable as a build, and it feels a little inelegant to switch to Mastery at the last second when that's already a proven (if difficult) way to win.

Have added support for Horn of Force - I'm getting back into development again after a long pandemic pause.

Horn of Force will now let you knock the crown off while the truce is still in effect and you can do it from a distance of a couple of squares. Morgoth will come after you, but with Quickness you should be able to evade him and get Elbereth or Mastery back online. Sil-cutting will be the most difficult bit - Angrist would be big here.
