Ok i know the character is really low level but it's the best i've been able to get so far. I've played this variant for about a 4 days now and this is the farthest i've been able to get. Is Steambad really so tough or am i missing something? Any comments and suggestions would be very welcome. TIA Rawel

Hi. My advice is to take you time heading down the levels. Remember that Steamband only had 50 levels, so its difficulty ramps up much faster than in other 'bands.

As a result, Steamband's start is probably tougher than in most other 'bands (well, from the ones I've played, anyway). Especially if you take quests. Taking a difficult quest can result in having to kill Troglodyte Beastlords at level 49, which is just suicide. Or, you could get Morlocks, which are a piece of cake.

Additionally, the early pits, especially the card ones, are a rough combination of difficult, treasure-poor, and only moderately good exp. I'd avoid them.

I'm not as familiar with the 'priest' spells, but among the mage spells, do you have spectacle of fire or ice yet? You won't be able to kill anything tough without them, and at your current mana, you won't be able to cast them very many times.

Finally, while you can probably handle the snakemen brutes (they're slow), you might not have the mana to finish them off, and your equipment isn't helping you much (I'm sure you're doing your best, but you haven't found anything good yet except that pistol.).

One other thing to consider is that spellcasters in Steamband, like in other 'bands, are a bit trickier to play than 'fighters'. You might want to consider going with an adventurer for a change. Save up enough gold to buy a shotgun and some ammo, pump up your skill in it (you can only put skill into one missle weapon. go with shotgun as a beginner player.), and blow things away.

I usually supplement my caster with a bit of device skill. Being able to blast away with a ray gun when you run low on mana is another way to finish off tough enemies. You can probably cast recharge by now so just juice it up again when it runs low. I would also through some points into stealth as that is very effective in giving you some breathing room. btw...where did the Pyrokinetics come in?? Is that a British skill or did gadgeteer open that up?

On 1.3.2005 17:52 Rawel_sao@yahoo.com wrote:
Pyrokinetics came up from gadgeteer at 5. This char is sadly dead now ( just some normal monsters really) but i will be trying another one pretty much the same. As for equipment i have no idea how to get any i've id'd all i found and none was even magic.:( I'm thinking that maybe i'm spreading my skill points too thin? is it viable to go for both arcane and priest skills? i've also put points in gadeteer for the clockwork carbine lead slugs spell. It's the best attack spell i had by far outstripping even spectacles in one on one combat.

I've only seen one card pit and i didn't even try going for it since the cards were far too tough for me.

Also i wanted to ask are 1-2 skill points the standard reward for difficult quests? I've chosen them for 50 and then 47 and only got a total of 3 skill points for both.:(

One last question what is Latin good for?

On 1.3.2005 22:19 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
To help with your conjugation and etymology, of course!

Seriously, Latin works just like Occult Lore. They set the limit on how high level spells you're capable of casting.

If you really find a lot of skill points, it might be viable to get both mage and priest spells, but I found it to be too many books to carry around and you're probably better off focusing on one.

Yeah, the clockwork carbine is pretty killer. Only having the Gadgeteer skill means you won't be able to get the really good attacks, and the damage won't scale up as high as you'd like, but its a good stopgap measure. Just don't put too many points into it.

You can't ID stuff? The second mage book has ID in it. Its not terribly high level, and I think you'd normally have access to it by about now.

The rewards for the quests are random, but generally speaking : easy quests will most often give you a little gold (like 150-200 au), but will rarely give you an ego item. Medium quests will occasionally give you gold, more often give you a few skill points (1-3), and fairly often give you an ego item (or a batch of items like 30 rifle bullets of harm elemental or something), difficult quests will usually give you an ego item (I think they're better than the medium ones, but I'm not very confident about that), and sometimes give you more skill points (3-10). Special quests pretty much give the same reward as difficult quests, plus you get to clear a vault while doing it.

I've also noticed that sometimes the various vendors give a standard discount on everything in their store (20-40%). It might be as a result of character quest status or having just done a special quest. I've never really looked into it.

Hmm i've started playing Steam again and with my new character i've just found this cloak on dlevel 48. Am i missing something or should i prepare for a quick and nasty death from the RNG? And also please any comments on the build and such like would be greatly appreciated.:)

Ahh i see the cloak doesn't get looked up.:( so anyway the stats are:
It increases your health and saving throw by 10.
it provides 80% res fire, earth/shards, water, air, electricity, ice, acid, poison, 100% time, 75% light, dark, 50% ether, sound, nether, psionic, telekinetic and spirit.
It provides resistance to life draining.

Ok the cloak has been a major breakthrough and i've gotten by far the farthest i've ever been. If anyone has any ideas about how i should continue equipmentvise i would be very greatfull. I'm also very apprehensive about the small amount of books i have i'm at DL 36 now.
Thank for any advice.:)

With that cloak, you are exceptionally well protected. My advice would be to steadily keep diving and picking up more equipment along the way.

I don't think you will run into any problems until things start shooting rockets at you. At that point you probably want to have wraithform and hige regeneration so you can stay in the walls and avoid most of the rocket fire.

When things start shooting rockets at you, start being a LOT more cautious. Rockets are probably the only thing that can kill you.

If you are planning on getting priest and sorcery maxxed, you should be taking difficult quests for big skill point rewards.

hth.

Holy Crap! That's a nice cloak! I've never found anything really in the same league.

I'd highly recommend pumping spell quickening, and, to a much lesser extent, Thelma, as skill points come along.

You might want to swap that ring of rFire for the ring of perception. Perception isn't terribly useful, but your Fire resist is at 163% so swapping the rings won't hurt you at all. An alternative would be to swap the Pectoral for an amulet of regeneration or a better artifact. Regeneration is overpowered at the moment, and the Pectoral really isn't doing you THAT much good. I'd only do one or the other, though. Having resists over 100% is kinda nice.

Thanks for the advice.:)

Ok another update. I've found the tesla light. It looks beautifull with the +18 ego and schooling but i dislike the -10 to muscle, vig, agi and also the Perma curse.:( Anyone think i should wear it? I generally never wear things with perma curse but this one is really tempting. it would also allow me to wear better gloves since it has free action.

On 2.5.2005 11:55 artagas@yahoo.co.uk wrote:
woah. rare to see such high resists on a steam char. indeed that cloak is the bomb. The lower levels are close to impossible without regeneration imho, so i second Elliot's advice on that.
If you just want to win than i think you should skip (as in dive through really fast) the last 10-15 levels or so. You can find pretty much everything you need around 20 (some extra speed and *regeneration*), and those last levels are really killers in Steam, even more so than in any of the other variants i have played. (of course if you want greater challange you shouldn't listen to my cheesy/cowardish advice)
Even though it can be nice with a caster i woudlnt wear Tesla's until you have decided on a final gear set-up. Versatility for me is worth more than any particular item bonus, since you never ever know what combinations will come up.
good luck, and no mercy for those Nazis!

Ok, i've just finished a special quest on level 20 for 6 skill points.:) I have yet to run into anything that would really make me afraid. the closest was one meritan rocket something in a pit but he died very quickly along with the rest of the pit to meteor showers. I extensively use the spell that repleneshes mana along with the high healing that allows me to meteor to death practically anything and if it's earth resistant i usually use the spirit spell (that is quite effective).

Anyhow any advice for how to continue? I'm feeling overly confident at the moment since practically nothing can hit me. Hopefully i won't run into something that kills me a round or so.:)

On 3.5.2005 07:14 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Well, that's kinda what artagas is referring to. You're going to be able to plow through most monsters without too much trouble at this point, but the stuff you find won't get much better as you get deeper. On the other hand, the monsters that can one-hit kill you will start showing up more often (dimensional etheric automatons and construct pits... *SHUDDER*), so why take the risk?

When you're ready, go straight to level 2 and start on the big guys. Looking your character over, other than a little more speed, you're probably ready for them.

Ok another small update and another small question. What do i do with 70+ skill points i have left after i maxxed all the things i can think of which have a direct impact on magic?
