This is my first priest to last longer than 5-10 mins. (Most of my prior characters were Mages and Warriors.)

I normally take a lot of level quests as soon as they begin appearing, but due to the greatly increased difficulty, and the fact that my failrate has been 95% with them... I am going to hold off on them until I feel I have a more robust character. Inspired by Timo's Challenge, I may just hold off on quests altogether for a while and see how deep I can dive.

On 31.3.2005 19:48 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
So far my best actual "finds" are my two shields of resistance and elvenkind (+Shards). Right now I'm going with the smaller shield of resistance because my spell points are taking a hit because my armor weighs too much.

My Dwarven mail was found in the Armory and I spent all my cash on it, but it's been worth it as it has allowed me to dive past 1000'. I need something with see invisible, but I have a priest spell to do the dectections for me.

I'm trying to powerdive to stat gain, but it's hard with the autoscummer on... heh.

On 5.4.2005 08:19 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Finally got another decent artifact! :) I've been diving really quickly (for me), and skipping the quests, since they have been MUCH harder (too much IMO), and just practicing powerdiving, learning who to run from and who to fight.

Now that I have Rohirrim I am able to replace my superheavy Dwarven Augmented Chainmail which was hindering my spell points due to weight. I also bought a leather cap of telepathy, and am wearing that in favor of a helm that grants +1 WIS, because telepathy better allows me to pick and choose my battles. Anyway, with Rohirrim, I've got rConf and rSound to add to my innate rBlind, so I'm pretty safe and can teleport out of any situation now. All I need to do is to get my failrate down to 0% and IIIFFF I play wisely, this priest should only die to YASD, or instadeaths.

Go carefully there without RPois, even with telepathy. One drolem could ruin your whole day...

On 6.4.2005 05:10 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Yeah... I didn't exactly want to get down to 2050' without rPois... but I ran into big trouble on 1950' and the quickest and best way out was a shaft down. I've got the auto-scummer on now, which makes for much more lively levels and keeps me more into the game. So far I've found that it makes for MUCH more difficult monsters, (usually pits and vaults and such) and almost never better items.

I think at this point my optimal elevation would be somewhere between 2000'-1900' while I get rPois and stat gaining potions. I also have a *VERY* low HP for this level, so I have to keep on my toes. Telepathy and my detection rods are practically necessary.

On 6.4.2005 10:14 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Only 1 level up (to lvl 32), but quite a bit of change in equip. Hanging around 2000' has been good to me... so long as I continue to avoid 7-9 headed Hydra pits.

Light Crossbow(+5, +7) -> Heavy Crossbow of Power(+18,+22)
=oSeeInvis -> =oCon +6 (I'm a Priest and have Sense Invis, so seeInvis isn't totally necessary... I think)
Cap of Telepathy -> Thranduil (+2 Wis, Telep)
Added Paurnen Gauntlets

Also statgain has begun, and with the =oCon my Constitution has jumped from 273 to 365 in just one level! Still waiting for rPois and enough STR+DEX to begin adding extra extra blows to my sweet weapon, a Well-balanced Throwing Hammer of Extra Attacks (3d6) (+10,+9) (+2).

Looks like the right equipment combo to me. Maybe carry the poison-branded Long Sword as a possible swap? I'm not sure if there are enough situations where it's worth the mana/fail penalty to bother. Probably not, actually. Carry on.

On 7.4.2005 08:45 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Yeah, I've considered that. Also considered wielding it if I finish stat gain and still of no rPois.

Actually, how much of a penalty is there for wielding a bladed weapon as a Priest?

On 7.4.2005 10:27 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
I played it carefully, left when I was halfway through instead of getting greedy, and the vault was good to me. Now... I need help figuring out how to set up my Equipment. Also, if it would make a difference there is a Holy Avenger Katana on sale in the weapons shop.

BTW- What's the hidden power on Holy Avengers?

On 8.4.2005 02:39 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
Lots to think about. First, Glamdring, Long Sword and Osondir can all go (I'm fairly sure Osondir isn't blessed; if it is maybe keep it for now). Caps of Wisdom and Telepathy can go; Thranduil is better. Buy the katana and wield it; the hidden power is a random sustain, and it gives you SeeInvis and a + to WIS as well as nice slays. Carry the mace as a swap against poison breathers. I haven't don ethe maths on sling vs xbow, but I think it'll be close. What you really want is boots/gloves of Free Action, which will let you wear =RPois. You could also consider swapping out the other ring (although the loss of hitpoints would really hurt), or wearing Thorongil (which IIRC gives FA). You can have 2 of permanent RPois, reasonable HP, and pluses to WIS and speed, but not all 3 :). Or I guess you could just wield the mace, but I think that's inferior to the other three options.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go without Free Action - I just lost a competition character to a Gorgimaera after switching my Boots of FA for Boots of Stability because there were nexus hounds around :(

On 8.4.2005 03:15 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Oh BUMMER! Yeah... I was pretty much counting on needing FA from some source. I've seen characters bite the dust from missing it and it's probably the worst way to go.

Thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated. It would be nice to be able to wear rings on all my fingers so that I could get CON, rNeth, rPois, FA, SI and all that jazz... but I suppose that would make rings too overpowered in *band. Heh. :)

What do you think about Carlammas (+2 CON) vs. Am of WIS +3? I'm not at the point where I need that +3 to get 0% failrate... so how important do you think it is to have that extra WIS vs. extra CON?

Yeah, I meant to say something about that. Basically you want to get you WIS (for mana, failrates) and CON (for HP) to 18/200 as soon as possible, and how you balance that is up to you. I might be inclined to go for Carlammas, especially as you'll be getting extra WIS from the HA. See how your fail rates and mana stand up to that, and how many more HP you get.
