A few minutes after I posted this I was clearing a checkerboard vault and when a Pit Demon when I was on hasted (mistake 1).
I didn't notice my lack of speed (mistake 2) and wasn't alarmed even when the pit fiend summoned 'ancient dragons.'
Ah says I, if these are only Ancient dragons (as in Ancient bronze, blue etc.) then they'll go down in one mana-thrust each, no biggie. I could have gotten out of the situation in numerous ways, but I didn't and only casted noxious cloud...last turn I got, because while I'm glibbly pushing escape (so as not to miss a turn but not have to read the messages) I suddenly see that I"m number one on my high score list. I didn't even get a dump.
