Nothing much yet; obviously. I jsut wanted to post and show off my 450 unspent xp; Bill Ferny dropped a potion of self knowledge! Normally, I don't find them useful, but 450 xp is truly nice.

Well, I've invested *most* of the excess xp I got from the potion of self knowledge. As I was still power 4 or so, I pumped magic devices up to 17 (as high as I could go before xp penalty kicked in). I also used a bunch to start my skills, but training weapons and xbows has been an issue for me, so some of the xp remains unspent.

As for quests; I finished my first one, but then got stegocentipedes; I was pretty sure it would be an impossible quest, but I bought up some csw and some movement scrolls (phase and tele). I was right; I think a quest for 1 stegocentipede (I needed like 7) would have been sufficient. I recalled (accidently read instead of going up stairs, and got a new quest, which I finished. I think quests (completed and otherwise) would be a nice addition to the character dump. Anyhoo, got some bolts from the last finished quest. Need to see about enchanting this battle axe and finding a better xbow.

Well, I've been managing pretty well so far. Just found this pick of digging. I somehow guess that it'll be a swap for a *long* time against anything that resist bludgeoning weaps. You pretty much need a weapon swap, and something with tunnelling will be useful. Acid branded too is nice.

The gauntlets of free action are the most recent quest reward from a dlevel 15 quest for dlevel 27 monsters Grave Wights. Actually, they're not too bad, and as usual, I'm overlevelled. I wonder if I'll be able to post this...looks like I'm a little power higher; I got drained badly b the grave wights and !oRestoreXP is not forthcoming... The stats are all drained due to disease and various traps.

Just got the light crossbow also; was using hand xbow for a long time. With good sources of FA and SI, all I need is the basic 4 resistances to do some diving. Well, that and a ! of ResoreXP.

Some components would be nice... With some steel I might actually make some decent armor of my own.

On 28.10.2005 23:45 wrote:
Things are looking up; equipment is pretty decent. Just crafted the chain mail resistance . Wormy dropped a pike of frost, which is now my weapon. I've got to figure out which weaps I want to go down with, either a bludgeoning swap or a tunnelling swap.

Got another gauntlers of free action for QR this time. Why can't I get these as a necromancer...

Could use some boots of stealth or FF, so I could swap in a diff amulet. It's tempting to use deadliness instead of protection, but the brand is probably dealing more damage than the pike itself. Cold brand is +14, pike is 1d13 * 1.48 I can't wait for stat gain. Multiple blows will be nice. I'm getting 9 armor from teh pike too, you get extra if you're proficient in them.

Hmmm... on my wishlist. Better boots (craft them?), ego launcher or Heavy Xbow, and more stat potions. Course, I'm 5 levels off where they even start dropping naturally.

Well, after 2 quests of nexus vortices (I guess they still happen on occassion), I managed to have my str swapped with charisma. Now I can't wield the pike of frost wormy dropped. Even with the ring of str, so my melee will be decreased quite a bit. On the other hand, I just picked up res conf and sound. Armor forging is pretty good...

I got a third set of free action gauntlets...sigh. I'll never get them as a spellcaster again...

Maxed out magic devices. They're really useful, more so than archery right now, due to never missing and having low fail rates. Of course, they won't get better than this. I'm really looking forward to my first (and 2nd and 3rd and 4th....) potion of strength.

I guess I'll jsut have to hold in until that happens. For now, though, I think it's easy quest time...

Ok, well I've upgraded to beta 20 now...

I failed another quest. Manticores. I figured they'd be hard, but individually I could kill them, but between hitting to poison and whipping poisoned darts, and lacking poison resist, the damage accumulated too fast. I teleported level to escape, and landed on an *incredible* level, but decided to leave to try the quest again. Mistake. Oh well. they'll be more good levels and vaults. I really wish I had some more strength, and *a single artifact*. Apparently I lost one, but I didn't see it. It was probably that neato level I just left. Anyhoo, I found some mushrooms and ate them; envenomation. As I was *weak*, I figured my first action was to eat something; but I had ?oSatisfyHunger and was playing too quick, so I ate *another* mushroom of envenomation. I managed to make it out ok; I had a *bunch* of healing and mend self and whatnot. Other than a thanc, I'm not sure there's a non-cursed artifact weapon I wouldn't wield. I could really use some strength > me. Otherwise, it's going pretty slowly. This character really needs some decent drops...

On 1.11.2005 23:56 wrote:
Just found a potion of augmentation :) Also netted Holhenneth and Collanon. New shield and armor too. If my str hadn't been switched, this character would be sitting pretty right now.

On 2.11.2005 00:38 wrote:
Recently bought an awesome weapon! a pike *2*d13! Still don't have the strength to get extra blows with it, but it should dish out the damage! Tried to *enchant* it into an ego, but failed. I'll try again unless I find an artifact weapon...

I've managed to craft or find something pretty good/useful into every slot of my kit. Gloves with +3 speed? Sure, I'll take it :) Now I just need some strength so I'm not at a heavy load all teh time. Next quest is for gnomish wizards. I think I'll pass on that for a long while. Maybe find a source of chaos resistance or at least a honkload of hp.

On 2.11.2005 03:15 wrote:
Ok, last dump of the day...I finished the gnomish wizard quest; it was easy. I've come a lot closer to finishing stat gain, though strength is a fair bit off, of course.

The 2d13 pike is doing well for me, and so is a third attack. Con is looking good, but still lacking an artifact weapon, let alone one better that this (ok, prob not too hard). I'm curious; if this weapon got westernesse, would it be more or less identical to eorlingas? Got a potion of gain skill. It was nice. I'm hoping to find a *good* artifact weapon eventually, so that I can choose which thing to specialize in. Maybe I'll get lucky and find the glaive of pain.

Aha! Momar must have had a elf for a mother! I found (and recently consumed) some mushrooms of metamorphasis. I got elf, giant, and dunadun (and stopped there). The dex is still pretty bad, but the stat boost, sust_con, and moving my 17 away from str really helps. I'll save up mushrooms of metamorphasis, so I can revert in a liitle bit (maybe), But for now, I can be happy.

On 3.11.2005 17:24 wrote:
Wow. That was a *nice* level. A quest level with time vortices also contained one of the diagonal room vaults that are packed with monsters. I got:
Boots of Speed +9 from a mystic
Thorin and some runegold (see gloves) from teh vault itself
Barahir from an enchantress (elsewhere, I think)
The Phial of Galadriel (from Castamir).

All in all, a *very* good level

I also offed Waldern and Vargyo (more or less simultaneously), Shelob, and Castamir.

I got a ring of holiness from the quest; can't hardly activate it, have light resistance, and sust_con. That makes it about as bad as a ring of sustain body. I think I'll keep the ring of acid for now. A better ring *would* be nice.

Not a whole lot going on. Found a castle-style vault on dlevel 64. Didn't have much for me, but I did manage to find Raal's Tome of Destruction. Also found Crown of Gondor (outside vault) and Thalketoth. That's the first artifact body armor I've found. I guess this was a good character to pump armor forging with.

Quest Reward was war hammer of battle. I'll be my new swap, but I'm really unimpressed by the rewards so far. Needless to say, no PDSM (yet). Finally managed to get *enchant weapon* to stick on the pike, and it's better now than before, but only marginally...

Finished stat gain.

I swear, this RNG likes giving me huge vaults on quest levels *with quest monsters in them*. Admittedly, I could have altered reality to change that, but I like vaults :)

It was one of those big arse city-sized vaults with a checkerboard of treaure in teh center. Anyhoo, I finished off the solars with some trepidation. A few close calls, but I knew that I should play it safe this time and when in doubt quaff. Even so, there were close calls.

Found 2 mithril and 2 adamant in the vault, and decided to go for a dragon helm, hoping for telepathy. No luck. Used all 4 on trying, but no luck. Even what I got was only ok. I decided to keep the detection from Holhenneth.

Quest reward was useful though; RoS +8. That pushes me up to +17 base, with plenty of staves of speed laying about.

I offed Omaraz the eye-tyrant (one of the uniques I dislike the most), and Fundin and early on the Phoenix. Saruman was also about, but I was looted out, so I decided to pass on him. Elsewhere on teh level, I found a heavy xbow of extra shots +2 -- one of the best ranged weapons available. I'm not looking forward to my encounter with angelic uniques, but maybe I'll have Vilya by then (hah!). I'd also like PDSM and the axe of Eonwe while we're at it.

Wow. 27 GWoMC is a lot of them. But they're dead now. Sky drakes would have been worse. Anyhoo, I finally got some telepathy from the Palantir. I should figure out what exactly "grave risk" is; I think it's suppose to initiate a fight with any smart unique on the level, but I don't know exactly what that means yet. I like telepathy. It is good. So is a rod of healing and an amulet of magical devices +4. Found a (good) Mace of Distruption, but decided I liked pikes 2d13 too much. I'm down to RoP depth (or at least Narya). I think it's time to get lucky.

Whew. GWoManyColors and GWoChaos done for. I was goign to skip the GWoChaos quest until I got disenchantment resist. I stumbled across a cursed chaos DSM, and swapped it in (current armor was only netting Shine and RLIGHT, IIRC) after I TELEPORTED ONTO A TRAP DOOR.

Anyhoo, I made a go at it, and found some Balance DSM, so I decided it was time to swap, so I headed back to town. Next, I got hungry and found myself out of food/scrolls. I managed to make it back to the quest both times, and finished it fairly easily.

Swapped in Belegost for pike of Eorlingas (similar damage, gain regen, feather fall, and some stealth). Swapped in Tulkas for Barahir, so swapped in Belegennon to have a source of RPoison.

Next quest is skull druj, and I just dropped all my rods of ball spells. Sigh. Maybe I'll jsut take the failed quest. Or maybe I'll scum for rods for a bit.

Fast+23 is nice. Missing Nether is obnoxious, but so far the damage is little, and I don't really care about losing XP. I'll probably sit at this XP mark for a while, until I choose my final race. I suppose it'll depend on my final strategy and equipment.

Skull druj are dead. Got a second long bow of holy might. Kinda neat, but I'm planning on Xbowing Morgy to death, and I think I'll dish out more dmg with a xbow. Maybe if I find a long bow of extra might +3 or somethign...

No equipment changes. Still hoping for an elven ring or PDSM. Pretty much all crafting exercises have resulted in something I didn't want. I want an armor with RPOISON and RNETHER (disen would be nice), but I've had no luck. RLight would be good too. After I get those, I'll be ready for the elven rings and Sauron. Really. This time for sure. Power 95 winner if I'm lucky.

Oh, yeah, I've been avoiding Azriel lately, and he keeps showing up. If I actually get a good source of res_nether, either as swap or base, I'll dig an anti-summoning corridor and try to off him. But I'm not doing it without Res Nether.

Ok, Obligatory PDSM post. This is probably going to change my kit. Ok, I'm still waiting on the elven Rings. Or perhaps the One.

Finally a *good* source of RPOISON.

Having Narya would make the Tarrasque and Ancalagon *much* easier.

Ok, I'm getting close to finishing up; so call me slow, I'm trying not to die. It's not being that hard. I just crafted some *awesome* gloves (they're in house right now). Now I just need to craft a helm with both confusion resist and perhaps some device skill.

The gloves have res_fear, +tohit and todmg, and have device skill, and sust_con (for when I stop being a dunedan). Aside from getting res_conf, I can think of nothing more useful.

Feldisham, Bullroarer, Boldor, the Emperor Quythulg, The Tarrasque, Qzzlylup, Gothmog, and the big 2 are left. I'll ignore the 'Q's unless I find them, but I want to off Gothmog and the Tarrasque, lest I find an unpleasant end.

Ok, well this looks like a kit! After some random forging, I got a helm with IMM_ELEC *and* RES_CONF that I was looking for. No device skill, but I've got another +2 on the gloves. It means the rods of healing aren't 0% fail, but I'll live. That's waht cure medium staves and potions are for. As I still had a piece of adamant left, I crafted boots and got slightly better ones. BoS +10 plus res_elec and +1 dex to boot, and sust_str. Now it's time to find/choose a race, Kill Gothmog, and take the plunge.

Sauron and Morgoth are dead!

After reading enough Hengband dumps to learn some real strategy, I went down with a pile of scrolls, potions and staves/rods.

I decided on finishing with an elf; there weren't any Sang Elf winners that I knew of, and I planned on shooting Morgoth to death, so it seemed a good idea. HP went down by around 100 (expected), but I still had sust_con, so it was all good.

Seeker bolts of impact, seeker bolts 2d8, and a host of other seeker bolts rained down upon Morgoth. He summoned a bunch, but I genocided them. *Destruct* was not necessary. 1 teleport, and a bunch of genocide-like things. And a lot of arrows.

I'm suprised this score doesn't top the list in points; I was only 94 power at the end (IIRC), while the top post was 100 power. I guess time is a factor? Anyhoo, this character started out as human, became dunedain, then finally elf; I am amused.

No, it doesn't seem to be time. It must be fame? Perhaps it's those 3 failed quests, and the less than most difficult quests that I finished earlier?

Stegocentipedes on lvl3 is a suicide quest for a fighter-type; they're fast and have a *huge* ac, and are decent in their fighting prowess.

I didn't have lightning resist going into Killer Iridescent Beetles, and they also dished out too much damage (and were somewhat fast, IIRC).

As for Manticores, they whip poison darts and breath fire. If I could have soloed each of them, it would have been doable (even without poision resist, but I had to leave the level too much for being attacked by too many at a time.

Hey, congratulations.

Regarding score, I agree that you should have a higher one for not finishing at power level 100. One thing to keep in mind is that somewhere in the docs, I remember it reading that number of skills chosen affects score. That might explain why my first winner had a higher score--he had two less skills than you do. But congratulations anyway.

Hmm... I looked in attribut.txt

There's a bonus for having extra gold sqrt(gold/100) and killing either Morgoth or Sauron, but more importantly, the formula is

250 * mons_level * mons_level / sum(skills *skill_cost)

So, spreading out your skills lowers your overall power and decreases your score, relative to focusing them more. Strange.

How about we agree that they're both impressive wins? :)
