Cuddle V will avenge his clansbears, or die trying! Sadly, the second fate seems much more likely...

With more experience and a decent early level monster recall roster, this iteration has been both quicker and safer (though did have to burn three TLs-- Pongo twice and a parade of monsters in the plains once). One note-- Pongo is REALLY REALLY hard at low levels. In previous iterations, he would spell my doom with a blind (or conf?). At this point, I don't bother fighting him until my char is ~ level 10, esp. since his drop is bad.

One quick note Nick-- Unlike another player comment, Cuddles *lurve* shimmering portals. With an early find traps, one can find them pretty easily, and they'll whisk you most of the way across a level. Don't know whether this is a good thing or not, but I don't think it is too unbalanced, and having them makes the wilderness a little bit more -- unpredictable. Then again, I never had to try a hard race.

Not yet to Amon Rudh, but making progress. I've decided that teleporting is the key to making relatively fast and safe progress around the wilderness. Cuddle has still seen some rough spots (primarily before OoD), but I am definitely getting the hang of relatively early wilderness. Even so, it is a long shlep from Gladden Fields to anything interesting.

Cuddle has been more agressive going down, and paid off with the second annual skeet-shooting competition, troll themed. He hasn't found much interesting in the way of equipment, but is having a relatively leisurely stroll so far-- hounds are an annoyance of course, and blindness has been a problem, but the better hp this time around has really helped.

So, Mim has been apprehended, with the perp database set up by clan Cuddle coming in really useful. I think that Mim may need to be redone, now that he is a dungeon guardian. With the proper resistance (which Cuddle sold out in order to get), Mim cannot deal damage at range, and is essentially helpless against a prepared character. I think he should have a couple more 'attack' options (like another bolt/ball, stinking cloud, or summons), perhaps in exchange for lower spell power.

Back to removing spell learning limits-- I think that in exchange for removing them, the xp for first casting of a spell should be removed.

After the Mim smackdown (resources consumed- 2 !oSpd, 1!oRAc&El), it was on to Gondolin to spread the good news. Cuddle got to the Sirion Vale, but due to sleepiness on my part, my play got really sloppy and Cuddle almost bit it. When I realized I was key-mashing, Cuddle WoR.

Really happy with Totila-- Cuddle might switch to melee somewhat sooner than planned.

As for Mim, I think he's probably about right; in O, you get the second specialty at clev 20, so I reckon it's OK that a well-prepared clev 28 character can get it easily.

As a side note, the late lamented Silence got an all time worst drop from Pongo - a ration of food.

From Tol-In-Gaurhoth, I bring you my accumulated wisdom-- sightliness is next to Godliness, and blindness doth bite, quite literally. Those black scorpions and serpents of the lowlands are rather unfortunate. Of course, blindness is a lot less nasty than confusion, due to _oTel. It seems that Morgoth got the memo, since his minions have already destroyed my first three staves.

In Tol-In-Gaurhoth, Cuddle tried running around without REl, and got shocked back to realtiy by first a thunder giant, than a colbran. Yikes. Fortunately, a black pudding dropped robes of elvenkind, which has RConf to boot.

As a result, CuddleI have three choices for weapon-- Totila, nogrod, and doriath. Since Cuddle is having trouble being overloaded, will try nogrod for the speed.

The trip to Nargothrond was less eventful than to Tol-In-Gaurhoth, though I vaguely remember some dicey moments. The first trip down to Nargothrond featured a superb level with another wheelhouse vault! Sadly, Cuddle was low on ID, and blew up his _oPer with about 20 items left to id (the mind blank by that vampire on the level was NOT appreciated.) Still, the haul was good: a shield of night and day, randart boots, and Colannon. Sadly this is not +3 spd Colannon (how many artifacts lost speed in O?), but I reckon it will be useful, if for no other reason than its activation and its stealth bonus (not to mention a badly needed AC boost, what with wondering around in robes). There was a couple nervous moments-- one in which a black scorpion got in melee range with blinding attacks (_oTel turned out ok) and once when a phase spider teleported Cuddle next to a ring mimic and within the vicinity of an blue D. Still nothing too bad. Probably drop down to 35, may even make a run at 40.

Today's update:

1. Bad news: While heading out for Nan Dungorthenb, Cuddle took a wrong turn out of Albuquerque and didn't realize the error until he consulted his map at Ered Luin 23. As a result, he still hasn't made it there.

2. Bad news: After recalling to Nargothrond 35, Cuddle met a bloke named Harowen of the Black Hand. My memory of him was an annoying, fast git who would steal my stuff. That changed when he threw a poison dagger that took off over half of Cuddle's hp.

Good news: See Cuddle run! Couldn't TL fast enough.

3. *GREAT* news: The TL landed me near a bunch of Algoroths, one of whom dropped a randart gloves that even without id, looked like the best gloves I've ever found either here or in V! +10,+10 and +2 spd. Yipee!

Good news: After *ID*, it also had RFi, RCo, and SI. Not the best add on stuff, but all useful (usually RFi and RCo are really nice, but priests get a spell with temp resists for those, but not for Li,Ac,Po.)

4. Good news: Cuddle found a level with a city-themed area which took up nearly all the level!

Bad news: While clearing the perimeter, Cuddle met a nexus hound who breathed him down to the next level. Doh.

5. Good news: Cuddle has been toting around potions of RAc and REl, which has really paid off.

Better news: He was thus prepared for the giant pit (thunder giants) and blue dragon pits, gaining much xp and sellable loot.

7. Bad news: The drop from one of the "unique" undead was a chest with summoning runes. Let's just say that the disarm attempt wasn't spectacular, and a bunch of elementals appeared, including Waldern! Needless to say, the chest did not survive

Good news: Cuddle tested his mettle against Waldern, and got a pretty easy KO.

I'm most impressed with the killing of Waldern, especially at level 39. That is 10 - 15 levels out of depth I would say and he has given both Orangebeard and Shrada a good fight even though resist acid was 80 or above for each. Yah for Cuddle!

On 27.1.2006 04:02 drchung@rcn.com wrote:
He wasn't actually too tough-- with potions, Cuddle actually had more speed and had enough resists so that Waldern could only do ~80 dam. And being a priest means never having to say you're sorry (about always being at full health). Cuddle did the ol' scoot and shoot (would be easier with book 5, but ?oPhase works just fine), and toughed off hp the four times that Waldern attacked. Harowen, on the other hand, is lethal, and I'm lucky he didn't get in a double-move of attacks.

All hail the incremental holiness of 0.1.2! This will be the last post from 0.1.1 (found out just 30 min ago).

Cuddle finally made in to Nan Dungortheb, and celebrated by cracking open a troll pit. Like a bear to honey, Cuddle made short work of it (thank you Dispel Evil). Ego items have been coming pretty quickly, though it is getting hard to upgrade his pretty decent kit.

Cuddle dropped down to 41 without incident. Then twice he dropped levels, once with TL, another by a trap. The TL must have been a reasonably bad situation, but for the life of me I can't remember why Cuddle TL'd.

Level 43 had a very good feeling, so Cuddle used a !oEnl to map it out. It had two vaults, a small many-roomed octangular vault, and a circular fort vault surrounded by a moat. First, Cuddle put to rest Cuddle IV (a vamp unique), and among the chest loot was a stack of 3 storm hammers of Slay Dragon. Loot-a-licious! Then Cuddle took out the small vault (death knight, mature green, ologs, master vamp, etc.) It has excellent LOS abuse possibilities, so despite budgeting some resources to take out the death knight, Cuddle managed it without having to use any. Among the loot was a crown of telepathy!!! Though I'll miss the wis, the crown gets swapped in (telepathy is imo pretty criticial). With it, Cuddle determined that the moat vault was filled with Z's. No thank you. Anyway, a rather successful set of trips.

Greetings from 0.1.2. The monster list window is much appreciated-- it allowed Cuddle to quickly spot Kavlax in the script L vault. In a way, not having book 5 has made me more careful this time around-- using a lot more of the old "shoot them from around the corner trick" to minimize chances of monster ranged attacks. That combine with glyph of warding (creates RoP), and one gets abuse-a-palooza time. Kavlax was down to 3 stars before he could even see Cuddle. Definitely not as easy to abuse as in V, but with resourcefulness, it can still be used to cut down on damage. Also used it against a pack of gravity and plasma hounds for some instant XP.

I used to think that telepathy was most critical for warriors, as they have the worst detection. But whereas it is a defensive ability for them, for priests (especially in the mid to high levels) it can be used quite offensively. It allows Cuddle, for instance, to see just where the hounds are around the corner and to get three OoD's on them before they can see him. It certainly makes Cuddle more secure, what with his 400 hp and lack of rPsn.

Unfortuantely, still missing a bunch of resists, including poison, nether(have an armor of elvenkind on it, but can quite juggle it in), and sounds, all of which are pretty important imo (poison because it is so common, nether because it has higher damage, sound because of bad side effect).

Almost hit the critical 500 hp avoid-most-instakill-situations level (although 600 hp is the real important one). Cuddle has seen enough wildly OoD creatures that he's going to keep diving-- I think that is the best way to survive. The diving won't be too fast since he'll go down each dungeon relatively evenly.

After I saw that Sharda got past 70 in Nan Dungortheb without meeting its guardian, I realized that Cuddle was diving in the wrong dungeon. Turns out I got Nan Dungortheb and Nargothrond mixed up. So, went back into Nargothrond; I was so frazzled by my earlier mistake that I had Cuddle keep on diving till he hit bottom, passing up a couple vaults (none too big) along the way. When Cuddle hit bottom, he "rerolled" the level a couple times (with alter reality) and found Glaurung in a good spot. I got a "hockey puck" set up with glyphs ready, but botched the run up-- Glaurung broke through the first three glyphs before Cuddle got in position, and broke the last one pretty fast. No matter though-- Glaurung from my V memory is one of the easier deep uniques, and that doesn't seem much different in F. Basically traded blow-for-orb, healing copiously. Glaurung never double-move with poison breath, so Cuddle never got below 400 hp (max was at 630 ish, with Barahir in for one of the con rings).

So, Glaurung is toast. Thuringwethil is roaming around somewhere-- considering hunting her down. Going to go back to Nan Dungortheb at a trot-- quite concerned about the master S.

So Cuddle rolled up his sleeves and decided to take out Ungoliant. This time, Cuddle would wait around a little to get level feelings, but there were few interesting levels-- mainly just one big level (about 76) with a superb feeling and one of the "small huts in a lavascape" pseudo-vaults. It was chock full of uniques-- Lungorthin, Krotus, Greencloak, the Maelstrom, Tevildo, and Rogrog were all defeated. Krotus was a shock-- at the time I had poison, dark, and nether resist holes that were covered with ring swaps (losing con). Cuddle had nether swapped in, but didn't account for Krotus' darkness breath-- it did the obligitory 500 dam, bringing Cuddle down to 110-ish hp. Bad times. Krotus was slain by taking advantage of poor monster pathing-- he was in the same corridor as Cuddle, with a rubble terrain feature in the way and 2 squares away from Krotus. Cuddle threw a steady stream of OoD, which at rad 2 clipped Krotus.

Ungoliant was easier--completetly sold out to face her, swapping in a sword of Gondolin (since sold), a shield of night and day, Caspanion, and Barahir (since incorporated into the kit) to get double resists. Cuddle then just duked it out with the big S and got the victory.

So, time to get to Sauron. On the way, met up with an anceint white dragon pit. With 100% cold damage reduction, Cuddle could go right into the center of the pit. With AC ~ 180 amped up, the dragons could do only about 50 damage a turn, and Cuddle would heal 300 with holy word, doing d280 damage to all in LOS. Quite disgusting. Needless to say, the item limit was hit.

Right now, Cuddle is fighting his way through a pretty big vault (the one with a bunch of 1x1 rooms on the top and bottom, with 12 rooms surround a big circular space in between. Ancalagon and Feagwath are there, (as well as a grand master mystic, which I don't think Cuddle will want to test), so he's taking it carefully.

By contrast, Pazazu was easy (seems to be true in V as well, though I once lost a character to Pazazu's summons due to player valor/stupidity), and Carcharoth was also pretty straightforward. Still haven't got my kit finished, though Cuddle has better swaps for the resists he's missing, and is carrying Celeborn around as a very heavy rod.

After that, Cuddle was resigned to a big slugfest, and knocked off another start before Sauron blinked away.

What happened next is weird-- Sauron wouldn't round the corner:

About balance, my thoughts are still coalescing, but here are a few of them:

1. The most distinctive part of Fangband is the wilderness, which I feel adds a new wrinkle to the otherwise endless dungeon crawling. I like how one knows roughly where one has to go, but that it is a ways away. It is thus too bad that the wilderness is only an early game consideration; it would be nice if there were some higher level wilderness areas, e.g. if Angband's entrances were at a deeper level, or for Nan Dungortheb were a "tunnel" and dump you into another wilderness area, perhaps underground

2. Besides Amon Rudh, the other three dungeons seem awfully deep. One suggestion is for Nargothrond to be not as deep, as its guardian isn't actually that tough (he's one of my favorite kills in V).

3. The shape of the game is quite different from V. The early game (up to about 25) is quite tough, esp. with the dangers of confusion, and incremental resists work against you at that stage as well. However, the mid game is more forgiving, up till about level 45. It then gets harder again (quite a few rather lethal monsters, and out of depth monsters seem to be quite common). However, at some point the incremental resists system makes the endgame relatively easier, I think, than V, with the exception that rings of speed seem hard to come by, offset by the new mini-speed rings (Eregion, warfare).

4. One concern I have is that it seems a bit too easy to stockpile huge quantities of ?oTL, !oHealing, and !oSpeed, mainly because when they are sold, they are sold in such large quantities. I think it isn't a bad thing for ?oTL to be available at the alchemists, but the fact that I can reasonably expect to find 10 or so there at a time is too much. Similarly, it is a bit too easy to find a dozen or so !oHealing or !oSpeed. I'd say knock the quantities down to, say, 1d6 or so.

On the other hand, I found !o*Healing* and !oRestoreMana to be impossibly rare. I mean, Cuddle found Ringil but not a single *Healing*, and only one restore mana. That seems a bit odd to me.

5. I suspect this will be hard to root out, but monsters can sometimes critically fail their pathing (like in the Sauron example). I wonder if there can be some hack so that if they get stuck and start taking damage without hope of actually reaching the character, that they take some alternative pathing approach or teleport (if they can).

6. Oh, and the shapeshift exploit need to go :)

I'll have more to say at some point. I really enjoyed your variant Nick, and will return to it after taking a stab at the current angband competition.

OK, less sleep-deprived now.

1. Agreed. Nan Dungortheb should become wilderness all the way down, but bad, nasty, evil wilderness :)

2. Good idea. Glaurung at 60? 55?

3. Interesting, and I'm not sure whether it needs changing. I quite like the beginning being kind of the hardest bit - you might lose a few starting characters, but when you get one going it's more likely to stay going. Reducing Glaurung's depth will help that second hard patch, by bringing in the last specialty earlier. As for the endgame, Bahman's reduced the resists on some artifacts in O; maybe I should think about taking that approach.

4. TL is going to be changed so it's not quite so effective in wilderness; the idea of reducing the stacks is worth thinking about.

5. Yes, this needs looking into.

6. Oh yes.

On 9.2.2006 15:14 drchung@rcn.com wrote:
2. Certainly Glaurung at 60 is quite reasonable. I wouldn't mind 55 or even 50, but it would come as quite a shock to less experienced characters.

3. I am not sure anything really needs changing due to this, just my thoughts on it.

I think reducing resists on artifacts is probably a good idea, but I'd be careful about ego items-- it's hard to get enough early, and characters really need it (e.g. acid is quite critical at 30 and again at 60, lightning becomes a real threat at about 40 with colbrans and thunder giants). Unlike V, the danger isn't big breath weapons (although they are worrisome)-- its those spellcasters.

In fact, one of the main things that makes life easier in the late game is incremental resists on the high resists-- In V, the high resists are vaguely helpful, but not to be relied on, whereas in O and therefore F, it reduces damage by at least 40% (perhaps a bit less for some of the extremely variable resists). That makes a huge difference-- even GwoP are doable at a speed disadvantage.

In the 50's, the issue (at least for priests) is almost completely due to speed, which is partially addressed through aggressive use of temp speed resources. I suspect that mage/druids have it easier, and warriors can tough it out; priests have to be aware of the many quick monsters that can dish it out, as with a bit of unluck there are potentially a lot of instakill possibilities. Then again, priests are pretty invulnerable to attrition, so that is perhaps a fair trade off.

It does seem a bit hard to get any sort of speed advantage on in depth monsters late in the game, but given incremental resists, that may not be a bad thing. As a side note, I think I defeated all of the deep guardians at a speed disadvantage (except maybe Glaurung, the wuss), so it obviously wasn't a deal breaker for me.

A few more ideas to throw out:

1. More info in dumps-- I think it would be nice to see current speed, item attributes (similar to V dumps where you see *ID* info in the dumps), and attribute modification.

2. More uniques-- 75 feels a little low to me, and they were a big clumpy. The mix of uniques is pretty good, though I think that one less unique Q would be good.

3. 3/4 guardian rewards-- nothing big, just a little cookie for "great deeds"
