Inspired by a question from Pete Mack, an ultra-stealth character. It works surprisingly well in the wilderness. Picking your battles is quite possible, although mountains are still challenging because monsters can block the path through.

I'm planning (probably in 0.2.0) to have all wilderness monsters start asleep at night (even hounds), and to lower the wake-up chance in wilderness.

Hi Bahman(?)

The wilderness is a lot like power diving, but without the benefit of being able to kill really valuable targets early.

I normally don't start powerdiving without a minimum set of capabilities: stealth, detection, evasion/escape. Hence, rogue.

NPP rogue is also an exceeding lethal shot (with a sling), and can set traps. I was thinking maybe Assassin is closer, but I don't know the details.

Never mind, I found the help files. Rogue looks a lot like NPP rogue. I will give it a try, maybe with Grey or Green Elf rogue.

Yes! A Robe of Permanance! This is a really fun class-race combination - apart from the light hounds, which really hurt.

Pete,

Bahman maintains Oangband, which FA is based on; in fact, the FA dungeons are very like O. Also, NPP rogues are modelled on O (which is where the trap-setting came from). Stealth makes a HUGE difference in wilderness.

Let me know how you go.

Nick.

I tried Grey Elf.

I eventually created an initialized save file that I could restart with, without having to reroll the character.

After a ton of false starts, I got myself to cl 18 before I got too impatient. I couldn't kill much in combat, and the only weapons I found was a Beaked Axe (2d6) (0,0) and a sling(0,0), neither of which is much good.

I never got more than 10 squares from the stairs back to town, most of the time I literally sat on the stairs and shamelessly scummed for light hounds & the like.

My stealth was only "excellent". Maybe I need to try Green Elf, and select "unlight" skill. I also forgot to try trapping monsters, though it's problematic out in the open like that.

Also: !Heroism is painfully expensive. I normally use a lot of it, and it's even more valuable in this game. You especially need it if you start at dl 19.

PS:
I agree rogue is usually underrated. It's a very powerful class, but it punishes you severely if you don't play in role, similar to Mage.

After my first pathetic death to crows and novice paladins with a Beorning Warrior, I knew I didn't have a prayer without playing extreme powerdiver style. (Stealth, stealth, and more stealth. And detection.)

Major mistake was going back into the dungeon with no teleport. Next one was not looking closely enough at the troll pit - I thought they were all stone and forest, but there were priests and they came out first. And the clincher was the tengu right outside the pit, so I couldn't just run until too late.
Fun character though; I'll play more of these.

Dark elves are the ultra-stealth characters; green elves and hobbits are next, then druedain. And of these, only druedain have it as hard as grey elves at the beginning; they get native telepathy, but no ego weapon.
