I've played Moria and its derivatives off and on for the past 15 years, but started into the nasty habit of turning on all the cheat options (albeit for preserving my own sanity) about the time of Zangband. Sadly, the cheating continued beyond just Zangband. This was my first attempt to get back on the horse, as it were, with a non-cheater. I decided to go with cheese, to ease myself back in.

Checkerboard vaults ... the glory ... the loot ... the DEATH. I cleared a couple of rows on one side, picked up several artifacts, but had to go around to the other side to avoid Cantoras (!). On the other side, I got one-shotted while fighting an Ancient White Dragon. I don't really totally get it. I guess the moral of the story is not to wield the -XX% Vampirics, no matter how nice they may seem.

Creatures that hit to shatter (like Hrus) can cause earthquakes if they hit you - so if possible try to hit them with a ranged attack before they get a chance to get close. Otherwise just try to keep your HP up and hope for the best - though sometimes you can be just plain unlucky. I once had a a character who got smashed for 826 HPs in a single round, thanks to a single Hru's earthquakes.
