As an unbeliever (my favorite class!) you'll absolutely require 99 of your healing and escape consumables. With the most powerful unbeliever ever created, I tried the void with merely average resources and failed. Get quad immunity, full resist, and absolutely have regeneration. Drops may be different in this version, but your gear could stand a big, big upgrade...at the very least you need a cloak of air, preferably elven.

And...have the mechanics changed? Unbelievers shouldn't be able to activate artifacts, I thought.

I have never seen a cloak of air, are they even generated before the portal to the Void opens? On the other hand, in the mid-game I start destroying every piece of equipment I see, since I consider artifacts the only worthy equipment to have. I guess I'll have to change that tactic, even though most of the non-artifact items are more or less useless after a certain phase of the game.

I don't remember ever been completely unable to activate artifacts with unbelievers. But, it has always hard for them to activate them. For instance that satisfy hunger -junkart, I usually had to attempt activation for a dozen times before succeeding, and the mass genocide -artifact was even harder, so it was practically useless had I been surrounded by hordes of enemies.

In any case, now that I have won ToME with two fighter characters, a swordmaster and an unbeliever, I have been trying possessors since yesterday. So far with little success, but I'd imagine that with dragon-summoning powers of wyrms and certain high-level dragons, I could survive the Void. We'll see.
