Hello, all! Haven't been playing for a bit, as I decided to take a break. Not sure if I am back for good, but anyway, here is a dump. I've seen a run of Magic Eaters on the ladder and decided I better get in on the action, never having won with one. My initial thoughts are that they are a pretty decent class, and should prove powerful in the end game with decent priest like fighting, access to speed, *destruction*, healing, and some decent offensive wands as well.

(CL31:DL34 Dragon's Lair)
This character had a decent start. My CL6 quest, Brodda, dropped Nature's Gifts which netted me about 19,000gp. I resolved to sleep in the town until something showed up, and was rewarded with a stack of staves of speed. I blew most of my gold on 3 staves, which was probably more than I needed as I never seem to use more that 3 or 4 charges at a time before they regenerate.

I chose a High Elf for easy gold generation, and have been buying every wand/staff/rod I could think of from the BM.

Now here is a question. I've heard talk of people charging things up past the Tower charge level with scrolls of recharging. Isn't this risky? I only ask because I found a Wand of Striking at CL28 and the first ?oRecharging I read blew it up ... Damn! I'm going to be conservative from now on, unless someone can convince me that that was just a fluke ;-)

So I was middling powerful hitting the usual stall around CL28, where I generally work the Mine for gold to buy a few choice stat potions. This got boring, so off to the Castle to stalk Ishikawa. He took a while to show up (This dump is about 10 minutes after his demise) but the Katana is worth the wait. Finally netted a 5th attack and my damage went from about 140hp/round to 340hp/round, which puts my magic arsenal of elemental balls to shame!!

Key magic eater abilities (from memory):
Rod of Healing ... but 44% failure.
6 charges of *Destruction* at 15% failure.
Lots of Speed.
8 charges of Dragon Breath.
Lots of elemental balls.

Sure wish I had that wand of striking back, though ...

I usually get up to 10 charges pretty safely (I think there's like a base 5% chance of blowing up with any ?oRecharging, so maybe you just got unlucky). The number at which the item starts blowing up regularly depends on the rarity of the item. I think Staff of the Magi doesn't really go above 7, for example, but just about everything else goes to at least 10.

Rod of Healing isn't nearly that high fail in the endgame.. I remember for sure that it was much much lower fail than Staff of Healing.

Wait, why does High Elf get easy gold generation?

Consider doing Haunted House Quest for Dispel Evil, Doom Quest 2 for Staff of Healing.

Cap out of Staff of Cure Light Wounds, Staff of Teleport, Staff of Enlightenment.

I assume he just means sells for high amounts and buys for cheap. The only thing I notice HUGE benefits for that is on archon. Archon's ALWAYS have tons of gold. And undead type and balrog never have any.

After you get by the initial early game hump gold is almost irrelevent for most classes anyway, but it can be damned annoying in the beginning.

I'm gonna feel stupid if he didn't mean that. :)

Yup, good CHR and most races like HE makes early gold generation a bit easier. I find myself relying on gold and the towns until about the Old Castle quest, so this might be a playstyle thing.

(CL34 : Cloning Pits)
I had a tough time of this quest. No poison resistance and a -12 damage from my cloak of the bat made the Queen Ants hard to kill (dam = 100hp/round without Zantetsuken). But I perservered. Nearly 400 fire ants and gosh, 40 or 50 hydras? Dunno, but the quest took about an hour and a half.

The last Gachapin dropped Eonwe, so I feel better. Switched to a Cloak of Aman I picked up from an It clone with Disenchantment resistance as well.

I did some research and found a 1 in 7 chance of blowing up a wand of striking with 6 charges. I found another one (!) and this time, I did recharge to 9 charges before eating. Still a high fail rate, though ...

So now I really need some poison resistance. I will not dive deeper until this can be addressed as I *hate* the insta-death!

(CL36 : DL44 Lair)

Things are moving along nicely now. Just finished my 4th Special feeling in the Dragon's Lair containing my 4th major vault. Ran into Ulik the Troll, which I did not feel quite up to. He resists teleportation, but not *Destruction*. The take was Caspanion, and now I've finally managed all resistances, albeit in an unusual fashion (lucky guantlets!).

So back in town I notice a Staff of Genocide. Nice, and I did not risk the recharge since (1) I don't feel very lucky ;-) and (2) I really don't use Genocide that much and (3) I might not see another one for a *very* long time. 4 charges should be fine.

Last vault had a Staff of Dispel Evil, which I hung unto until I could return to town and recharge safely to 8 charges. I risked the ?oRecharging and bumped it to 9. I decided not to tempt fate any more, since Dispel Evil should prove extremely useful! (Still want _oPower, though)

Probably my most surprising find was an Amulet of Telepathy. Very nice ...

So here is my wish list:
[1] _oHealing (Doom Quest II)
[2] _oPower
[3] -oRockets
[4] -oDisintegration
[5] _oMana Storm (Volcano)

Did I miss anything? I'll try to do another arsenal screenshot, though I must say I am starting to get tired of absorbing everything, especially since I use so little of what I have.

Don't forget to try your luck with mutations. A Harden to Elements or Steelskin or Extra Legs would be nice right now. I see you already did Vapor Quest, but I'm sure you can find a Weird Fume somewhere ;-)

I tend to overdo mutations, but there really are few really bad ones, so I tend to go overkill and get most of the useful ones I like, and take the bad with the good.

Few things are horrid other than vulnerable to elements. And once you get berserk, in vapor quest you can essential hold down macro to berserk and get endless mutations. :) But not everybody is that mutation gun-ho.

I personally hate the Moronic mutation, and tend to ignore mutations altogether. But that might be stupidity on my part ;-)

(CL46 : Volcano DL32)
Man this character was weak in melee until quite recently. 5 attacks with Eonwe was netting me a massive 210hp/round in damage, making my various spells competitive. 30 rounds to kill a Great Venom Wyrm?? You betcha! So things were going very slowly, and I was hanging out deep in the Dragon's Lair hoping for some of Entroband's now famous goodies (Bullseye made a quick appearance, but the next 8 or 9 hours below DL60 were dry). Finally, I decided to make a go for Soulsword. On paper, Vecna is fairly intimidating with Mana Storms and Dispel Magic in the arsenal. But the reality was quite different. Some annoying summons but quite an easy kill.

Swapped Soulsword for Eonwe, Boromir for "oTelepathy, Tulkas for =oDisenchantment Resistance, Palantir for Laputa and my melee damage is now decent (462hp/round). Prior to this Great Wyrms of Chaos were too risky (they still are risky, as a double move can dish out 900hp of damage) and I would typically use 6 or 7 healing just to kill one. But now they are doable, and so are Great Wyrms of Law/Balance/Space Time. Heck, even Tiamat is down!

On the arsenal front, I've managed 10 charges of _oHealing, and 5 charges of -oHealing. The latter is quite surprising, but I have already been playing for 23 hours on this character (We can't all be as fast as Dave's MindCrafter!). Plenty of *Destruction* (30+). But no rockets yet ...

I decided to go for the _oMana Storm in the Volcano. Its hot in here, but Shooting Star is quite a pushover ...
