This cavalrist seems to be rather solid. Had a few close calls during the midgame, but Lukas seems to mostly be set to try to get at least one of the Lazy artifacts. I'm thinking Moroth is probably the easiest to find/kill if i can find him in a GCV (or any vault with a narrow passage for that matter) -- and then there's also the "stay on a corner of the map" trick. Unicorn is probably way too dangerous with disintegrate breath + summoning, and the Ring.... well, I'm not sure about the ring as I've never actually seen it in Entroband. I have seen it in ToME/FuryBand where it mostly just breathes nasty breaths. Is it the same in Entro?

I also having doubts about the Lord of Change I'm riding. Although the speed is great, he/she/it doesn't seem all that sturdy when hit by non-resisted breaths/attacks. The problem is: What do I ride instead? Most of the Greater Wyrms with lots of HP and big breaths seem to require at least two immunities... and I have none. :(

Also, I have the Spec gauntlets and I'm *very* tempted to put them on. Can any additional curses put on them by the Blood Curse be removed with ?o*Remove Curse*, or will all the added curses stick?

The One Ring can be pretty nasty for those without Passwall or Wall of Stone. Witness my Warrior-Mage Jay Gatsby spend 17 !o*Healing* and 2 !oLife to kill it.

It can also summon a lot, heal, and Mana Storm.

My melee is slightly stronger than Mr. Gatsby's, but currently I only have around 11 !o*Healing* and about 7 !oLife.

Oh, and I forgot to ask: Will the aggravation from Spec cause my own pets to turn against me? (I.e. when I eventually capture a GWoP with a capture ball, will I have to 'break it' a second time and Rodeo it, or will it stay friendly when I pop it out of the capture ball?)

Personally, I'd wear Spec. Cold Immunity and you get +2 Attacks.

Then you might consider killing Cthulhu for Razorback, which has Electricity Immunity. Together, you could then ride a Sky Drake! Or put a GWoPower in your pocket and ride him in key battles despite lack of Fire Immunity. I think if you double resist than you won't take damage ... but even so, when you are fighting Morgoth/Unicorn/Plain Gold Ring/Serpent, you will be healing often enough not to notive. And a GWoP is the ultimate driving machine!

But, I do see that you bought (!) PDSM ... My god. How much did that cost? So that sort of makes the Razorback argument more difficult, but if you can cover all resists w/o PDSM, than I think that might be a good way to go.

You are correct, the Lord of Change won't hold up in any of the 3 lazy guardian battles (though you could probably bring a spare ...) Good Luck!

On 3.6.2006 20:30 AnonymousHero wrote:
Ah, I hadn't considered Razorback -- good call. I can probably cover all resists with a bit of equipment reshuffling. I have tended to avoid equipment with aggravation out of habit (ToME/Furyband aggravation is just awful), but maybe it isn't really as bad as I think. I think I'll try swapping in something w/aggravation while I find a GWoP/Sky Drake to capture and see how that goes.

Oh, and the PDSM cost somewhere around 1.1M. I tend to scum the black market quite a lot, so what I usually do is just to try to amass around 1.5M as soon as possible by killing ancient dragons for spellbooks. That way I'm always prepared to buy a PDSM if it should pop, and can still afford other neat (expensive) equipment from the BM without going below 1M.

Thanks for the hints!

I went hunting for and captured a Sky Drake while wielding Chainsword which is aggravating. It didn't seem too bad, so I decided to wear Spec... I went from ~800 avg dmg to ~1200 avg dmg. Wow.

On the downside, the aggravation does sometimes mean that I need to teleport a bit more for position and that I need to be much more careful when walking into open spaces. Guess I should try to pick up the Earthquake mutation for LoS interruption.

Went for Cthulhu immediately after capturing the Sky Drake and of course Cthulhu breathed Disenchantment right after I'd gone through the trouble of setting up a nice anti-summonin corridor. Just decided to stick it out and pummeled it into the ground with the help a couple of ?oMassGenocide for dealing with the summons.

Now there's only the problem of covering all the resists while wearing Razorback. It seems I'm missing rShards, rNexus and rChaos if I swap Razorback for the PDSM. Unfortunatly I can't find any combo of equipment which will give me those, so I guess I'll have to hunt for (or scum from the BM) some Dragon boots/helms or a =oLordliness to cover those.

Sidenote: Not a single =oExtraAttacks spotted yet, so I'm still wearing a =oDamage(+22).

Switch in shiva boots for Nexus, Switch in Jewel of Judgement for Chaos, and wear a ring of shard resist instead of reinforce muscle +2. Your stats look like they could survive not having +2 to str/dex/con.

This is all just a suggestion, but since you can already cover them if you WANT, I thought I'd point it out. I imagine other things are possible too. Just depends how much you want to use Razorback.

On 4.6.2006 08:50 AnonymousHero wrote:
I hadn't noticed that possibility, but that would mean no ~Tele which is essential at this point. Unfortunately an "oTelepathy wouldn't work, as I'd then lose rNether from the Harness. Hum... maybe Thranduil for ~Tele and rShards would work. That still leaves me without susCon and strStr (though with susDex) which is suboptimal.

I have found a couple of dragon boots with rNexus and rChaos, and can cover everything with those and =oRShards, but then I'd still lose susStr and susCon. I don't know how necessary they are at this point, but I'm not sure I want to find out.

I also just noticed that I can cover everything with Soulsword instead of Chainsword and an =oRShards. I lose quite a bit of damage (~120 avg I think, plus the copious amounts of vorpal hits), but the Soulsword does have all the important slays (pitiful dice of course). Hopefully the Dragon can make up for some of that.

I think think I'll try the Soulsword option first and see how that goes.

Working lvl 90 of Angband waiting for a GWoP to show (or at least for a GCV... I could really use Diatribe :)). I did spot one GWoP in a vault, but it summoned a huge horde of D's and three(!) unique dragons at something while i was trying to lure it into an anti-summoning corridor. Chose to Mass Genocide hoping that the GWoP wouldn't be affected. Unfortunately it was. Killed the three unique dragons though, so it wasn't all bad.

The Sky Drake seems to be holding up reasonably well except when hit by big unresisted elemental breaths. I have only had one really close call. That was while I was fighting the The Destroyer when two Great Unclean Ones who'd joined the battle both decided to breathe acid during the same turn. That took a huge chunk off the Drakes life bar and I had to teleport to heal it. In the end the The Destroyer went down, and it was actually reasonably comfortable except for those two U's.

Looking at the r_info it seems that Morgoth does less damage per hit than The Destroyer and has fewer HP, so if I get lucky and find him in a vault where summoning can be kept under control I should be able to take him on now. Of course, I'd much prefer to have a GWoP around for that, but we'll see...

I was going to skip a vault when I noticed a PDSM lying on the floor. Even though I already have one I thought "why not?" and went in... imagine my surprise when it pseudo-id as {special}. Yes, folks, it's Bladeturner. :)

Since it doesn't actually have any immunities I've stashed it in my house for now. In fact, I imagine it won't really get used at all once I complete the Lazy trifecta. Need those immunities. :|

Unicorn is down!

I stumbled upon it purely by chance, and decided to go for it instead of waiting for Morgy to show. It took what seemed like forever to get the first few stars off because it kept summoning/blinking all over the place. I got pretty freaked out when the Chemist was summoned, but I was able to teleport away and *Destruct* him (and about 1000 other summons)...

The turning point came when I teleported away at one point and ordered my GWoP to *only* summon at some random monster. It promptly summoned a few ancient dragons... including another GWoP! I dismissed everything else, and switched to "stay close" while I closed in on the Unicorn, then switched to "give me space" so that the other GWoP would stay a bit away from the Unicorn (thus causing it to breathe instead of meleeing). At that point things started to go my way. I was able to melee it down to a single star when it teleported away. The Terror Mask's random teleport asked if I wanted to follow... "Hmm.... Lemmethinkaboutthatforasecondyesplease!" I followed and on the very next move the unicorn summoned some angels. I ignored them and let one final flurry of blows loose on the Unicorn and it was down for the count.

The drop was Clothes of Idler and some other misc. stuff which I couldn't be bothered to pick up (I have Preserve On anyway). I was obviously hoping for the Stick (which would cover ImmFire nicely and provide some nice damage output), but I think I can use the Clothes instead of Razorback, so I guess it's the second best outcome.

Morgoth is down!

Rather uneventful battle, really. Morgoth almost immediately summoned special, but Morgoth's AI causes him to chase across the whole map, so I just tele'd away and started *Destructing* the area in preparation. After that it was mostly melee with a couple of summon undead and summon ancient dragons. There wasn't anything too dangerous among the summons, so I just ignored them. Had one "close" call when I got Darkness stormed by a Black Reaver (I think) and Morgoth got a couple of hits in in the same round (one of which caused the ceiling to collapse). Ended up with ~300HP and quaffed a !oLife just to be on the safe side.

Of _course_ Morgoth dropped the Yumi which is almost useless. Oh well, it does have rLight which was missing on the Clothes of Idler relative to Razorback, so I can now switch to using the Clothers + Yumi + =oResShards and use whatever weapon I please.

Pity about not getting the Stick, but your kit is looking pretty dominant right now anyway. Once you've taken out the Unicorn, pretty much anything short of the Serpent/Chemist/Ring is small potatoes to be dispatched with impunity.

Yup, I was amazed at finding Bladeturner just lying there. It's a bit of a pity that it doesn't have any immunities, especially for such a rare piece of armour.

When I'm riding the GWoP I can dish out tons of damage since I don't have to worry about its health at all, but I'm still missing that vital ImmFire to be able to ride it full-time :|. Switching is so annoying that I mostly don't bother. Maybe I'll just have to find Deathwreaker/Azgahal for ImmFire. ;)

I'm going to be searching for the Ring, but the r_info says it's native to dlvl 110, meaning that I'm pretty much just going to have to get lucky and find it in a vault. (Still haven't seen _any_ GCVs at all in this game. Very annoying.)

Still looking for the Plain Gold Ring; been hanging around dlvl96-97 for quite a while now. Also dispatched a few of the remaining uniques (Kronos, The Norsa, the two Q's).

Question: Are dlvl98/99 skippable, or do I have to kill Oberon/Serpent to be able to go deeper to search for the PGR? It's just that I'd like to actually get to use the Stick for something other than just killing the Chemist (yeah, I'm planning to kill him or die trying)...

Another question: A lowly ogre dropped a ?oArtifactCreation, but now I'm not really sure what I should use it on. I could try the PDSM, but I think I'd have to be insanely lucky to get ImmElec (which I will need and which I already have on Clothes and Razorback). Weapons are probably also out of the question as I'm very unlikely to get anything better than the Stick. AFAICS that just leaves Dragon Boots or an Elven Cloak.

As 'Righteousness' (see the home inventory) shows it is possible to get up to at least (+5,+5) on boots, so I could get lucky and score an Immunity and (+5,+5) on boots, but I'd think the odds are very low on that.

A cloak could potentially be made redundant by Maelstrom with its (+8,+8), but I'm not really counting on finding that any time soon. (Plus, I _think_ I've seen randart cloaks with damage modifiers, so I could get lucky.)

I'll probably go for the Cloak and hope to get ImmFire or ImmAcid (for when I finally get a hold of the Stick). What do you guys think?

Getting bored waiting for the PGR to appear, so I went to take care of Oberon who proved to be a complete pushover. He only summoned once (Greater Undead), and that was in a corridor. At one point my GWoP breathed disintegration and opened everything up, but luckily Oberon never summoned after that. I think I spent a total of two !oHealing and one !o*Healing*. I think this might have been a case of extreme luck, though.

Right now I'm contemplating going after the Serpent without ImmFire since it doesn't seem to be much of an issue during combat. Overall the Serpent looks like a much nastier version of Morgoth: KILL_WALL, SHATTER and tons and tons of HP, but also Disintegration breath and Rockets + summon Cyberdemons. Ugh. On the plus side he might summon the PGR ;).

Apparently the Serpent also has the RIDING flag... I wonder if anyone's ever tried to Rodeo it? I'm not crazy enough to try, but that might be a good screenshot :).

Both the Serpent and the Unicorn of Order have already been riden by ppl... one of them by som1 in these forums and other by a guy in japan.
I was able to ride Jormungand and Godzilla... The problem is that uniques never get really tamed, and at any time they can rebel, drop you to the ground and then proceed to wipe the floor with you...
My choice of mount were Fenhuangs and for a long time the creature that evolves from common unicorns... that r easy to catch. It is mostly on par with GWops.
Good luck!!!

Plain Gold Ring is no more -- the Stick is mine!

I found the Ring in the middle of a huge vault with only two 1x1 granite walls/pillars as cover. The vault was also stuffed with lowish-level critters, which my GWoP took care of admirably by me simply standing still at the entrance at letting it breathe at them. I decided to try to approach the ring by stepping around the aforementioned pillars (i.e. minimal exposure), but the Ring summoned demons and dragons as I was stepping around the second pillar. Luckily there were no chain summoners among the summoned critters, so I made my way back to the exit. I quickly realized *that* wasn't going to work and decided that I would have to *Destruct* the approach area (for cover, obviously) if I was going to stand any chance. Luckily I was able to avoid *Destructing* the ring itself, but got enough cover to leave only 3-4 steps from behind cover to the Ring. There were no summons during the approach this time...

Once in melee range the Ring hit quite hard, but since blows were shared between me and my GWoP I had ample time to alternate between !o*Healing* and attacking. Quaffed a single !oLife at one point because I'd been stat-drained quite a lot, but otherwise it was only a matter of time as long as it didn't summon any summoners. There were two only two summonings during the battle, a Warp Demon and a Mezzodemon (the latter of which the Ring itself killed with a mana storm on its next move :)). I left the Warp Demon alone as it seemed that it would take a few precious rounds to kill -- they also generally don't seem to summon all that often.

Now I *am* going to go for the Serpent, but I'm going to get myself a =oExtraAttacks(+2) before that...

Nicely done.

Baring some serious bad luck, you're going to hammer the Serpent into the ground.

I'm curious to see how you fare against the Chemist, though. I've seen weaker characters than Lukas managed to defeat the Chemist, but I've also seen... well, hard to think of many characters that were clearly more powerful than Lukas. Lets say "comparable" characters (and there haven't been many), just get crushed by him.

The Serpent is dead.

In the end it wasn't that much of a challenge. The biggest problem was when he summoned the Chemist. Since they both follow across the whole level it proved quite a challenge to separate them. A couple of times something got in the way of the Serpent, and the resulting dungeon shattering embedded the Chemist in rock thereby saving me the trouble. The third time the Chemist was summoned I got a bit lucky and the Serpent and Chemist ended up going into a vault, lots of shattering ensued and the end result was that the Chemist was prevented from getting out of the vault by some granite wall. I was able to lure the Serpent out on its own, and from then on in it was pretty much over...

Serpent summoned guardians and ancient dragons a couple of times, but there wasn't anything too dangerous amongst the summons. I think I got Jormungand (trivial to get away from), Shelob, the Minotaur(heh!) and Layzark who I forgot to kill before the fight. Some dungeon shattering created a wall around Lukas and the Serpent, and so I just kept pummeling until the Serpent was dead.

The reward (besides the two fixed arts): Hithlomir and some randard Black Clothes. Woo.

I haven't retired yet... I'm still considering whether to go after the Chemist, but that'll have to wait for another day. If I'm going to do it, it'll probably have to be in a vault to avoid AFC summons and I think I'll have to snag a Cyber Angel Demon Lich Dragon thingy for the speed boost and self-haste. It seems to resist everything and 10k HP should be plenty. I've only seen my GWoP (16k HP) lose a single star off its life bar twice so far. That was vs. the Ring and vs. the Serpent.

Oh, and I think this is the first Cavalry winner on the ladder...? Do I get some sort of prize for that? ;)

Very well done. I was going to to note that Blackreaver had a Cavalry winner a while back when he was playing in parallel with that Japanese guy playing the Beastmaster, but then I looked it up and realized it all happened in Hengband, so you're right.

Congrats on the first Entroband Cavalry winner!

Hum. First attempt failed. Chemist got embedded in rock... I'm guessing because of some TY_CURSE effect.

Second go... failed. This time I got teleported away around 3 times (on successive blows -- not even successive rounds) and summoned on. There wasn't anything too dangerous, but I stumbled on a demon pit containing lots of Star-Spawns of Cthulhu while making my way back, so I decided to not risk it.

What do people generally do for the Chemist? Wear anti-teleport items, or just hope that the AFC teleportation doesn't kick in?

Depends on your character's capabilities. My one and only Chemist slayer (I'm 1 for 5 or so, with the successful effort being a Samurai) took advantage of teleport aways as opportunities to heal and regain SP, since he could cast things like Charge Attack and Hundred Slaughter to quickly get back to the Chemist. That character also had a wealth of weapon options (made 3 attempts, wielding Muramasa, the Stick, and finally Grond) and ultimately succeeded with Grond. The Stick is great and Grond tends to limit your blows/round, but when you count in the value of those *GREAT* hits, I found it to be superior.

Others, however, have succeeded with anti-teleportation devices. My beef with those items was that it can leave you stuck should the Chemist suddenly surround you with Cyberdemons.

Why are you wearing the ring of protection instead of Tulkas?

On 16.7.2006 15:15 AnonymousHero wrote:
Re: Tulkas: I simply hadn't noticed that it has a higher +AC than the =oProtection :).

I think I'm going to try the coward's way and use anti-teleport in a vault. *Goes off to reorganize equipment*.

The Mad Chemist shouts 'AAAARGH!'

The third(?) attempt at killing the Chemist was the charm! There were a couple of moments where it looked like things might get out of hand, but they never did... partly thanks to my second GWoP continually breathing on stuff. That 2nd GWoP helped immensely, but I had to dismiss it at one point as Lukas had been teleported away by the AFC and the Chemist was summoning lots of angels around it. By that point the Chemist was down to 2 stars so I felt confident that Lukas could chop off those two last stars.

Fortunately Lukas never got statuefied and the Chemist only stopped time twice -- but didn't seem to do much during each of those time stops.

/me does happy dance! :)
