This is a new class for me, and initially I was wondering how on earth anyone was going to survive getting anything powerful, so I played as a weak warrior for the most part.

Novice Mages gave me my first spell, Magic Missile (2D6 + 8), which became a good staple for the early levels. Next, the Druid in the Arena provided Fire Bolt (failed to learn Frost Bolt and Lightning Bolt :/).

But the Sewer Quest, and in particular the Undead Devilfish, provided a huge arsenal (though mostly too high fail to use for now), including Breath Time, Breath Disenchantment, Breath Light, and Breath Darkness. I basically sat there and let it continue breathing at me until I ran out of food. Sadly, I did not pick up Breath Sound or Breath Chaos, but oh well. I don't remember too many things that resist both Light and Dark anyways, other than Ethereal Dragons.

Huh. Light, dark, and disenchantment breathes are all HP/6, but Time is HP/3. I can see Breath Time being a good end-game weapon then...

this character is really cool! i'm impressed that you've gotten even this far, because my blue mages have all met early deaths (the only blue spell ever learned being cause light wounds). i'm rooting for mighty blaster!

Off to a nice start! I seem to recall there being a single Heng Blue Mage winner and it was a Cyclops, oddly enough, who relied heavily on breath attacks.

Nice job scumming the undead devilfish. How many SP do spells cost?

On 20.6.2006 06:43 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
I played with a few other races before I serious started on this one (Half-Titan's xp penalty is generally pretty daunting), and I couldn't figure out why the Heng winner went with Cyclops. I mean, SP is at least as necessary for Blue-Mages as any other Mage, so it seems like a bad idea to pick a INT-penalty race. The other one I was considering was Vampire, but double Light damage thing is somewhat bothersome.

The breath attacks are 16-18 SP. Oh, and from the spoilers, I'm guessing that Time damage is capped at 150, which is why HP/3 isn't terribly overpowered. Since my max HP will likely be in the 1000 range, I'm guessing all the BaseResistance breathes will be about 300, and the HighResistance ones at about 150.

Granted, that's pretty decent damage to SP ratio, but it's a bit lacking in firepower as far as I'm concerned. Probably useful only for secondary effects (i.e. Sound for Stun, Gravity for PhaseDooring the opponents).

On 20.6.2006 13:15 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
That's a good point. I never really thought about it, but against, say, the Serpent, your best breath attack is likely to be Mana at maybe 250 per breath. How on earth did he get the job done with an attack that weak? Mana storm seems like the best bet, but its still only ~300 damage.

I knew there was a reason I never played one of these guys, though I felt the same way about Mirrormasters and someone (Chris?) managed to make one into a dominant combatant.

Yeah, actually, I'm starting to regret picking a Half-Titan, because that more or less precludes gaining tons of mutations through Vapor Quest. Hm, maybe I'll suicide and try again with some other race, now that I've figured out the formula to quick Advancement.

Blaster is back with a new form! Actually, I tried (and failed) a good dozen or so times on Lazy personality before returning to Mighty. -1 HD and -2 to all stats on top of that, plus the lack of gaining +2 STR and CON was too much for low-level survivability.

This version's doing quite well so far, despite the slightly weaker luck with picking up breaths from Undead Devilfish (only Dark and Time this time).

Borshin, level 6 quest, gave me an immensely awesome randart armor, which gives +4 STR, INT, DEX, and Speed! That's pretty damn good.

Not too much later, the RNG appeased my worries about RBase by dropping a Defender weapon (don't remember where I got it... not from a unique, and it pseudoed {uncursed} before I did ID). Thanks to Clubs being 2-handed, I'm already at 3 blows, the max for Mage-types.

Actually, with this, I'm tempted to deviate from my standard rush into the Vault, since my current weapon will last for a while, and is probably better than Sting until I find a Helm of the Magi or something similar.

AC is piddly, and no RoDamage in sight. Hm.. dare I wander into the Castle in hopes of trying to pick up Mana Bolt from DE Warlocks?

Ok, a damage ring showed up in the BM, but it has Light on it too! Gr~! Anyone else feel like they've been ripped off when they buy a RoDamage or Slaying with some other "feature" attached to it?

See attached screenshot for what I found in Doom Quest 1 ^^ Actually, I also found a randart bow there, which provides RFire, RDark, and RConf. Only the last is of any real value, but good bow slots are hard to come by. And to think I usually skip this quest...

Oy, what a disaster. Went into Killing Fields after successfully clearing Vault, since I had earlier bought Wand of TeleportOther, and started to clear the Warriors of Dawn, except I was trying to manually disarm the traps.. and fail on a summoning rune, which promptly bring Horamirth of Dir, a Vampire Lord, a Master Lich, and a Spirit Troll. >_<

I teleport and kill another couple Warriors to hit clvl 28 before leaving the level. I have no doubts on those monster's current ability to quickly kill me if ever I wander into their LoS.

Huh. It's going to be one of "those" games, isn't it? Rich drops a randart shield with +5 INT, and I'm at 18/219 INT already.

After a run through the Vapor Quest to pick up mutations, my suspicions are confirmed. Blaster seems indeed to be one of "those" characters where everything just seems to fall straight into his lap.

The three mutations I picked up were Extraordinary Resilience, Extra Legs, and White Aura!!

Also picked up Nexus and Nuke breaths, but decided to not press my luck further, since I had been drained down to clvl 19 already. Guess Harden to Elements/Steelskin/Eat Magic will have to come from !oPolymorphs ^^

I must admit that despite the good start in terms of items and mutations, I'm getting discouraged by this class. It seems more and more like a severely gimped version of Magic-Eater. Compare:

Physical:
Blue-Mage gets 3 hits, compared to Magic-Eater's 5. Blue-Mage fighting skill 40/6, vs 48/13. Blue-Mage +2HD, vs Magic-Eater +3HD.

Offensive Magic:
Disintegration/ManaStorm/Rockets present in both cases (although Rockets is stronger for Magic-Eater). Magic-Eaters also get Staff of Power and Genocide. Blue-Mage also gets Breath Gravity, Breath Sound, and Psycho-Spear.

Healing/Defensive Magic:
Blue-Mage: None. Magic-Eater gets 300 HP healing, 500 HP healing, Protection from Evil.

Support Magic:
Blue-Mage: Summoning, Teleport-To, Hand of Doom.
Magic-Eater: Destruction, Speed, Enlightenment, Detection, Animate Dead.

Trading Healing and Destruction and Speed for Summoning seems like a really bad deal to me :/
