Made it to Amod Rudh, no small feat. I sold the Magestaff of Gondolin to fund a bunch of teleport level and word of recall scrolls to circumvent much of the wilderness. I got to Ephil Brandir rather fast but ran out of money there and had to scum for a while to get up the courage to dash south to Amod Rudh. My biggest problem right now is poverty. I need some capital acquisition so I can feel a little safer.

The telekinesis, telekeneeses, teleprompter?... the spell that makes your backpack a magnet and drags items from the ground from a goodly distance is super handy and cool. I got the lamp of Gwindor this way, which was fortunately next to a wilderness exit.

Oh yeah, BM had a restore mana potion for sale now I order them from Ephil Brandir for 3800 a piece.

Playing from a USB key so I have notes for this guy, w00t.

I don't know why I'm writing so much I'll probably be dead soon.

How come you have so high INT?

Racial bonus + Clarity bonus / cornflakes x I put all my points there + class bonus = 18/80. If you meant why I dumped all my points in int and chose clarity I have no answer for that. :/

Well, now I've seen everything.

As regards notes, 0.2.1 is out, and has a birth option to write the notes to the save directory - I'd be interested to see if that makes any differences to your non-USB playing.

Hooray for the complainer, hooray! I checked out the notes to savefile directory thing and it works great. I couldn't transfer this guy over because his birth options were already set, but it works for new characters.

As for my character, my a.c. is pathetic and my hitpoints are low too. I'm looking for enchant armor scrolls and rings of constitution but no luck. On the upside I'm a walking arsenal of wandage. Recharge II does a pretty good job of cranking the charges up on wands with a really low destruct rate. Nimloth occassionaly connects monsters! Awesome! Playing on a USB key is really cute because there is a red light on it and it blinks everytime I save the game or check the ~ menu stuff.

Dropped from 24 to 29 and became more choosey about who I fight. Found Mormegil's armor lying on the ground. Mim's sons are toast. Fought Mim himself, the fight was too evenly matched. He didn't pose much of a threat but I didn't either. :( Went through my stockpile of 6 speed potions and 3 restore mana potions. Gonna have to go back to 29 and re-stock and re-evaluate tactics.

Wow, can't believe I survived a whole day with this guy. Sold Nimloth, a dubious move to give me money for a potion of strength, constitution and healing. Sounds weird but the carrying capacity boost plus losing the 5 lbs. from Nimloth helps keep me above -1 speed. Unfortunately the constitution potion gave me no immediate h.p. boost. I keep hacking away at level 29 but no new items yet, but I do keep running across uniques I should've killed by now. Andelune's monster memory is quite handy in pointing out things.

I feel like I've been at 29 forever. Oh wait, I have. Celegorm was a nice find giving me double elemental resist plus light and dark resist, but it does crank my mana points down from 145 to 118. Thinking about grabbing the armor specialty should I kill Mim. He resists all the elements and poison and light didn't seem to phase him. Magic missle doesn't do enough damage. The only thing that seems to work is shrapnel wands, but I got greedy recharching them and blew 2 up. :( If I can find a couple more and stockpile some recharge scrolls I should be able to take him out with those if nothing else shows up. If I get too bored I might try with the one wand.

Finally got Mim. Took me 14 recharge scrolls with the one wand of shrapnel, plus about 10 or so recharge II spells. Also used 6 potions of speed, 5 scrolls of protection from evil, 5 holy chant scrolls, 4 potions of acid/electricity resistance, 6 or so cure critical wounds, 16 phase door scrolls and about 10 or so arrows.

Good for you! Now that your blood lust is a bit satiat... sasi... saciated? ....satisfied!.... let me tell you about my most recent battle:

You see, I was heading down the stairs to the lower level (quite burdened with a heavy load because I forgot to do my shopping) when out of nowhere there were like fifty giant spiders! So, I grabbed my trusty bottle of bug spray and proceeded to rain genocide upon them. Damn bugs. Always interrupting my trips downstairs.... meh :)

Bwa hahaha! You told me the 4d6 bug spray from Y-Mart was more reliable than the more expensive Wally World 3d8 version but I didn't believe you. You realize you don't get any experience when you genocide them, however... :)

Decided to take one more trip down to Amod Rudh before heading out to Nargothrond and I found Dungeon city! I found three of these greater vaults with Shrada, and now one with Sacrilege here. I was able to clear the whole thing. Wig! Then some more wig. With a little wig on top. No artifacts but lots of lucrative loot, especially in the stat potion department. I owe my success first to the haste spell since I was at +10 speed most of the time, second to the teleport away wand and spell which let me send out the queen ant among other annoyances at crucial times, and thirdly to stone-to-mud wands since most if not all the walls in dungeon city aren't permanent.

If I wore the Con +2 ring I would gain 15 hit points, but I need some form of taking out things that are resistant to the elements so maybe with the skill, deadliness rings with heroism potions and hasted I could toe to toe something to death. I was surprised when I melted about 12 forest trolls in a row with my new sword.

This is my first real mage character ever, unless you count Lamron and a mage I tinkered with back in 90 something when I was playing Moria. I thought it would be all like, boom whiz bang wham killer spells that zap everything to death, and maybe it will get that way later... but for now it's all about sizing monsters up and luring and teleporting away and phase dooring and using wands and hamstringing monsters to kill later and grabbing loot with telekinesis and bolting and trying to figure out how to kill monsters that I've always taken for granted. It's definitely different and more fun than I thought it would be. I didn't care if I died for most of the time I've played this guy but now I'm gonna be upset when he goes!

Heh, I just came across a second amulet of intelligence +3 I would gladly trade you for it for the serenity helm. Heck, I'll even throw in a couple of shrapnel wands for your fight with Mim precharged to 10 blasts each!

I stumbled across a cool nifty. If you get confused and the last action you did was fire a wand you can use repeat action, or 'n', to continually fire the wand in the direction you had been without fear of it aiming crazy like it probably should. Real handy if you are clearing out a corridor. I loaded up a fighter character to see if you could repeat action while meleeing to stay on target while confused but this glitch didn't apply there. I've never fired a wand in my life before, besides stone-to-mud that is, so this is probably well documented but I just thought I'd point out my new finding.

As for that wand thing - never thought about or noticed it. I guess it _kind_ of makes sense - you might be able to just do exactly the same thing, but if you try and do something new you can't do it properly.

The shop finally got around to offering me one, but I'm really hoping to find Mablung. I just found a chest full of leather caps of light... bwa ha ha. ha. Oh... Ugh.

I'm horribly addicted to the destruction spell. Obliterating Z's is my new favorite hobby. I can understand why destruction was nerfed for vaults now. When you have an unlimited suplly of obliteration juice something must remain sacred.

I must hand it to you most exalted Maintainer, I thought I had the way into Nowhere Town for sure this time...
As soon as I entered level 55 I realized I was in a themed level. I figured you had set up a new permanent level for Glaurung but it was just a coincidence. I was like, aha! Since themed levels are drawn the same every time I thought for *sure* there would be a staircase down to Nowhere Town, but alas, no staircase. I must find another way... While in the Dire Wolf Themed Level, I destructed everything, and I mean everything. Carcharoth decided to say hello. He surprised me and attacked me down to around 100 hit points. I'm really lucky to still be alive. Anyway, going to check up on Glaurung to see if he resists all the elements which he probably does. If so I guess I'll head over to Angband since it's so close, if I survive the foolishness that is.

Setting out to meet Glaurung prompted another themed level! This time the dragon one at 54. Was able to kill several dragons and destructed the rest of the level and grabbed the artifacts listed in the notes.

Aglarang! Aglarang! Oh how I hate thee. I really should be using Anguirel and int +4 amulet for 0% failure rate and +40 to max mana, but I just cant help my stupid self. 6d6 at six attacks! Wow! Can I change back to a warrior now? It sure was a stubborn sword, it took my whole stockpile of scrolls to enchant it up. I really can't justify wearing it other than it just feels so good in some degenerate part of my brain somewhere. I'm not kidding.

Glaurung has been smote! He didn't resist all the elements. Ironically, Glaurung's blood rod did the most damage. The fight drained my stockpile of healing potions and Glaurung took me to 31 h.p. once while I was being greedy trying to stretch them out.

I'm wondering what specialty to choose. Heighten Magic and channelling both look tempting. Which would you rather have, or would you pick a different one?

Decided on channeling for laziness sake, since I know I'll be at max mana a lot of the time. I thought about power siphon too, but with the whole travelling merchant selling mana potion thing available, I'm not too worried about mana. Of course, it does take a turn to drink one of those brain milkshakes. I remember Cuddle V was getting very close to Morgy and hadn't even seen one yet, while I've had a veritable hoard (hoard?) for most of the game. The travelling merchant really makes the middle and end game much more relaxing and approachable, I love 'em.

Mablung! Oh goodbye Aglarang, I must use Taratol for confusion resist. It was fun never swinging you. <3

Having conflicting o.c.d's... I want to kill the uniques I've missed at around 50, such as Lorgan and Ariel but can't without better wandage or some cool spells in the outer fringe spellbooks... but also want to move on down the dungeon. Hmpfh. I have decided to suicide dive to 88 and try to steal some artifacts and spellbooks using my pretty good stealth, destruction and teleport away.

Connecting stair powerdiving has produced yet another themed level. This makes 5 or 6 now, I've lost count and haven't mentioned all of them. This one was the demon fire one. I thought you had to spend significant time on a level to trigger a themed level. The last 7 or 8 themed levels I've seen have been from my abuse of the connected stairs. Another quirk with themed levels... there are some permanent walls, but they don't keep their contents protected from destruction like permanent walls do in regular levels. The monsters and items inside can be obliterated. I feel lame for getting so many artifacts in this super-weak way, and I think this is contributing to my overrall lack of interest with Sacrilege at the moment. I kinda hope he dies at 88. Maybe some successful thievery will spark some life back into this guy for me.

Well, I got my wish!
I came across one of the bubble type greater vaults where all the monsters are in indivual prisons. Of course, all the necromancer/druid/priest spellbooks were there and no magic user ones! But, in the center right next to each other was a power dragon scale mail and a 4d5 longsword! So, I get to melting rock, creating doors and teleporting away all these late game uniques when I forget to do my elemental resist buff just one time and *wham*! got killed by that maelstrom. maelstorm? Only by 5 hitpoints! Argh! I was already dreaming of all resistances with a low weight armor and +10 to speed. In a way I'm glad this happened because ever since I got the destruction spell I ruined the game for myself and haven't had any real fun since then... I just wish it hadn't happened just 10 or steps away from pdsm and Ringil... that's like salt in the wound! This experience was more fun than I thought it would be, but ultimately taught me that playing mage is sacrilege because I have much more fun playing warriors.
