This is the twenty-seventh iteration of my attempt at playing a Hobbit Warrior -- and I've attempted perhaps ten other characters before that. Nibbit XXVII is currently third in my personal high-score list, and will be second in a few hours of play.

This is the first character that I've used the autoscum feature on, and I wish I had used it before... I am missing some of the more mundane items that I would otherwise get (I prefer 5+ rods of trap detection), but it sure is saving time messing around.

My current major dilemma is this -- I have two decent weapons, a broken dagger of Westernesse (+2), and a main gauche (Defender). I am very close to hitting 1000', and I understand that I need the basic resists to do that successfully. However, the dagger has the nice stat boosts. I don't know which to take with me, as basic resists doesn't seem to do anything to prevent item damage, which is my main concern.

The BM is currently selling a rod of teleport other. I think that I might want this, but am not certain. My inventory is already quite stuffed. I also need to change from using my sling, but the sling is the only good launcher I currently possess.

Autoscum is certainly going to increase my learning rate...I learn best by dying. I now know that things of summoning are BAD, and hopefully I will stop panicking in near-death situations, such as lead to the loss of my best character so far (I had at least two ways of avoiding death there, but I just had to panic on a TURN-BASED game *shakes head*).

Any advice or comments would be appreciated. I am shortly going to tred in depths with which I am most certainly not familiar.

Additionally, that Cap of Thranduil has been a major help. I found it on 150', (I was on the way down to 400' or 500'), and it scared the snot out of me until I figured out what telepathy was good for. Something tells me it was severely OOD.

Both weapons are good for 1000ft. The defender is better if you are worried about what you will meet.

You should buy the rod of teleport other. It is very useful for when you meet something that is too tough to fight.

Thranduil is a nice find. You should also *ID* Thengel and probably carry that as a swap.

I need a new digger. I have come across two small vaults that I was unable to penetrate. I was able to use four Wands of Wonder to get the random Stone-to-Mud transformation, but they gave out before I finished the first vault. The second vault was completely unenterable (I didn't have the want of Stone-to-Mud then).

Previous iterations of Nibbit have not had much trouble discovering better diggers. Could it be that decent diggers do not trigger a good enough feeling for the autoscum to notice?

My current conundrum is whether to use the Leather of Elvenkind (which has 12 AC and all four basic resists & one unknown resist) or continue using my current armor (which has 29 AC). I would like to avoid using the Defender weapon, as the regen is quickly consuming my waybread.

Would giving up all of that defense in exchange for the basic resists be worth it?

On 25.6.2006 04:55 ferrat@kobold.rogue wrote:
The elvenkind armour combined with the westernesse weapon is definitely the better choice. Resistances are more important than AC, and you will also get stronger attack. You should also wear Thranduil for the telepathy, and carry Thengel for when you need it's particular resistance.

On 26.6.2006 01:53 mystah_b@hotmail.com wrote:
Yup, okay. I suspected that I'd better wear the elvenkind, but that piece of armor was so nice and shiny I kind of hated to give it up.

I was wearing Thengel for the +3 Cha whilst shopping, though I haven't been taking it with me in my travels. I need to *ID* it but have not yet found a good scroll.

Thank you for the advice, Ferrat.

Gar, he's dead. I thought I truly had something going with this fellow.

I got too cocky fighting that orc and let my HP fall too low. When I saw it in the high thirties I realized that I needed to read a ?Teleportation when my turn next came around. A few "-more-"s later I was dead. Didn't have a chance to read it.

Still, I managed to beat my personal high score.

Ah, well...it's nice to have my soul back. I don't think I'll play Angband again, at least not for a few years. It is royally entertaining, but the first thousand feet are beginning to get old. I need to work on school!
