This one has been a little quicker to play. Went through one nerve racking and ultimately unprofitable vault. Will tackle Mim pretty soon.

Mim was mauled good-- only cost one !oHealing.

Getting to Nargothrond on the other hand was trying. Bear ended up down to 40 hp, but finally reached it. After marking his territory (with ?oRecall), the next trip down he found some good eats-- a giant pit. The thunder giants were a bit tricky, but martial arts is great against giants-- not too many ranged attacks, and I can almost completely rely on martial arts to generate confusion in a melee exhange or two.

Also getting quite fond of well-balanced thrown weapons.

The good: Bear found a randart helm with telepathy.

Let me say it again: TELEPATHY!
I felt nervous running around without much clue to what Bear Lee would face while rounding the corner. Now, I have a bit more warning when inertia hounds come round.

The bad: A nexus vortex scrambled my INT for STR. With a starting int of 9, that wasn't good. Burned two !o*STR* to get strength up a bit, but still struggling. Toting around a =oSTR and making more liberal use of bearshape to work around the problem. Also praying for !oSTR.

The ugly: it sure is nice to have spells. Since switching to the pearl a bit ago, Bear hasn't been able to find any rods of illumination, so he is wandering around in the dark. Also, it is annoying to have so much trouble using the -oTA.

Good work - you've got further than I ever would without spells. :)

I might try a little-used combo once I'm back from holidays - maybe a Ranger or an Assassin. Any suggestions?

A Druadan ranger would be pretty good-- that starting telepathy I imagine would more than make up for the difficult starting position. Lots of "stair-scumming" would probably be necessary. For an easier start, a Green Elf ranger would be decent I'd imagine.

I think it would be cool to try a xbow wielding Easterling ranger, though that would undoubtedly be a bit unusual.

Descedned a little bit deeper. Finally found ?o*ID* and found out that my randart helm of telepathy was... essentially a helm of telepathy (has rFear and feather fall, yeah...). Deepest unique slain was Lorgan, who Bear got into conf lock. Vrocks are currently the latest food fad-- high in exp, though a bit bony (esp. when they land blows). Looking for rPoison right now-- once I get a source, I'll go challenge Glaurung.

Also moved to Gondolin-- Sharda (and here 25000 gp upper limit) are much welcomed after dealing with a 5000 max in Khaz. Bear sends Cuddle V and the rest of the clan's regards.

You mean there is something besides armsman and fast attacking? lol. I would choose athletics. It's hard to argue with a 5% boost to h.p. and +2 to con and dex. If armsman applied to the kicking bear stance I would rather have that.

Decided upon the extra HP from Athletics, and happy about the choice.

What I wasn't happy about was my decision to go to Nan Dungortheb next. I was hoping that a melee character would have an edge there (with all the forests blocking LOS), and Bear did ok in the 50's. However, I decided to get Ungoliant, and at 80, the ability of hounds to just come after Bear was too much. I must have recalled and TL out of the final level about 20 times, trying to find a good landing place so that I could find Ungoliant. Bear almost died once, getting repeatedly confused by Chaos and Tindalos hounds. I accidentally overwrote my Nan Dungortheb recall point, but I was already at tilt, so that was for the best.

Went to Tol-In-Gaurhoth next, which is much more tuned to my play style. Still having the midlle-to-end game warrior blues-- burning resources just to stay in place I felt. Bear did eat his way through a demon pit, and found Tulkas, which is huge. Of course, resists have been hard to come by-- just trying to hang in there and find some speed items at this point. Deepest unique slain is Feagwath back in Nan Dunortheb 80.

Maybe I should make Glaurung tougher - I guess I want him to be reasonable to kill at about CL40 for the 3rd specialty - any opinions?

On 15.1.2007 03:31 drchung@rcn.com wrote:
Nick-- About Glaurung, I don't think you need to worry too much. What makes him relatively easy is the fact that his offensive abilities aren't too scary and his hp is relatively mediocre copared to the uniques at his original depth. This is especially true in V. In FA, he is a fair bit out of depth for a unique at 55, but his basic chassis is defensible-- get rPois (and temp rPois for most spellcasters), get reasonable rFire (which is almost always a given by that depth and with a simple store potion), and you can deal with him. My char could deal with him a little earlier because I dived to 50 about as fast as I can to find a =oPoisonR so that I could go after him ASAP. If you want to toughen him up, give him another attack-- say a hellfire arc, or breath force, or breath light.

As you will see, I've done some upgrading of equipment :) Nothing beats clearing outuniques, pits, and vaults at the seventies. Cubragol is the biggest addition. I am considering a challenge to Sauron soon, though might make the long trek to Ungoliant instead.

One annoyance, I was in the middle of trying to clear a checkboard vault (had to TA Carcharoth and Cantoras, but had already killed Baphomet, Ariel, Tevildo, Smaug, Harowen, and Lungorthin), but accidentally used my -oRecall after I had ditched my ?oRecall. Oops.

Yup, not about to wait around like some princess elf for those two :) Granted, I do swap RConf a lot-- that is pretty deadly to anyone. For warriors, rBlind is a bit of a luxury, esp with telepathy. And I do not believe I've found a single source of it so far.

Bear first took an excursion to Nan Dungortheb. One can move really fast there with 50 ?oTL. Ungoliant turned out to be at the farthest part of the level, proving yet again to be the rarest monster in the book. The actual battle with Ungoliant turned out to be an anticlimax. The journey turned out to prove more profitable though, with Elessar and Celegrom turning up (which may be the best shield in this variant).

Then, a quick recon mission turned up a =oEregion. so it was definitely time to size up Sauron. This time, Sauron was a short distance away from my recall point, so it was on. I was worried when Bear only knocked one star off Sauron before being forced to use Elessar. However, Serpent Sauron was easier to deal with, esp. since lizards are so tasty. Further, Sauron would blink away, giving Bear time to regroup, reheal( !oCCW), and rebuff. Finally, Wolf Sauron brought back ancestral memories of bear-wolf battles for domination, and Bear couldn't stop himself from biting off Sauron's head.

So, it is time to head off to Angband now.

Lordy, you've gone fast. No problems with big poison/sound/shard/nexus breathers so far?

Tried a Druadan Ranger - and promptly remembered that I hate playing Rangers (all those **** arrows to collect afterwards). :) Hmm, maybe a Necromancer next once the latest Twiggy bites the dungeon floor...

On 16.1.2007 15:49 drchung@rcn.com wrote:
Sean-- One of the advantages of going fast is that you don't feel the need to fight monsters that you don't want to deal with. I've actually got poison resist right now-- Elessar has it-- and before that, I got it from a swap with Belegennon. I haven't seen much in the way of serious sound/shard/nexus breathers. Even great crystal drakes and ancient gold dragons are pretty easy with these hp's, and I in general ignore Dracolisk's and the like.

Basically, as long as the big breathers get into melee range quickly, I can womp them fast enough so that their breath attacks aren't a major concern. And if they do breath at the start of battle, I TL out of there like no one's business.

Diving fast is playing on the knife's edge-- witness all of the dead characters I have on the ladder-- but you learn quickly what you need to do to become a better player. For instance, don't take Vecna lightly, and death knights and archpriests can summon stuff that kills you :)

Do you use Cubragol much for firing? I want to get an idea of how useful shooting is and when it gets useful, so I can improve rangers a bit.

Yeah, that Bear sure likes his shopping. He claims to be metrosexual-- I'll let the audience judge.

When Bear had an X-bow of extra shots, I used it occasionally, but I have this strong desire to throw sharp implements instead. I rarely shoot with Cubragol-- I am enjoying the martial arts perhaps a bit too much. I believe that shooting is very good already, but never tested it. I'll have to try it out sometime (probably soon).

Bear has reached the big five-o. A quick hike took him to Angband, and the intention was to beeline to 99/100. However, Bear ran into the Dragon's Lair and the Elemental Battleground. He cleared the first and traversed the second, and picked up a bunch of artifacts. By the time he reached 72, he was chock full of artifacts and even found two upgrades-- Mablung and Cambeleg. Also, the randart shield Mairere is quite interesting-- it has +1 CON (enough to max outside of bear form), RAcid, RLight,RNexus, and RShards. So, Bear is toting that around too.

Basically, there are no more items I'm waiting for-- it is time to saunter towards Morgoth for the final confrontation.

Minor gripes: I found NO !o*Healing* or !oLife. Sure glad to have those store services, I'd never have the patience to collect all the necessary !oHealing for the last fight. It was a good thing that Sauron only took one...

Nice work - it's good to see it's possible to win with martial arts.

On another issue - I'm planning to reduce the dungeon sizes a bit: Angband to start at 60, TIG probably 40-85 (maybe 50-85), ND 35 or 40-70. I'll probably make some of the wilderness on the way north 2 steps at a time too.

Any opinions?

Very nice work - does oook have stats on the lowest turncount win?

What's next - the Beorning Assassin Bear?

Nick - sounds like a good idea but it'd probably be best to implement that "2 steps" idea - otherwise, it'd just be replacing dungeon with extra wilderness to get to the required "depth" for the dungeon entrance.

(unless you want to make the wilderness bigger - but having just done another slog from Khazad-Dum to Doriath on foot, I'm biased on this one) :)

Hallu-- Bear does not respect laws, both those of man and elves. And he has a need for speed. And food. And alcohol (trying unsuccesfully to be a drunken master).

Nick-- I think martial arts is an interesting choice. The damage is not as good as a normal warrior, but the confusion attacks and lower general requirements (good weapon and STR/DEX are not necessary) make it quite interesting. About dungeons, those changes sound fairly reasonable. The 2 steps change is also a very good idea-- descending dungeons is much faster as it is, and going through 24 wilderness scens is time-consuming (did it twice to get to ND).

One concern, right now ?oTL can be used as an express train to get to the bottom of ND. In fact, for most characters (those who rely on ranged attacks, esp. missile where trees prevent you from attacking monsters at all), I would use ?oTL exclusively in ND, planning only on confronting Ungoliant. Perhaps TL should be allowed to go "up" as well as "down" there?

Sean-- I think I am going to give ranger a whirl. I have theorized that archery is perhaps over-powered, and want to confirm that. Once I get a character started (may take a while, gonna go HE) I'll post it.

Based on an hour's faffing, HE Rangers are a lot more fun than my attempts with a couple of Druadain and a few Green-Elves - the weapon (esp. See Invis) makes a huge difference when you're relying on seeing trouble from a distance.

The Lore spells aren't bad for a Ranger, actually - Detect Life avoids a lot of the typical "difficult start" insta-deaths when you get mauled by a tiger two steps from the exit. I'll stick a chardump up over the weekend but getting to Lvl 15-18 seems fine - then the risk is that overconfidence takes over and you start attacking Red Dragons and the likeā€¦ the difficult bit, of course, will be actually getting more than 10 squares away from the stairs without getting hounded (you see what I did there) to pieces...

PS Spoiler alert: a Quylthulg behind a tree (good old SI again) is a lovely starting kill - I went straight from CL 5 to 13 with two arrows.
