After a discussion about Dark-Elves, I decided to change tack with this character and go for a stealth elf necro...

He has unlight instead of clarity, which along with bat form enabled him to cross the wilderness to Amon Rudh with relative ease and at a much lower level than my previous chars.

He is using the lamp (as no light area spell) though I am concerned that this will negate a lot of the unlight benefits.

Already had to bypass the Moria special level as I only managed to kill one orc before running out of mana - its a shame when a special level gets generated so early!

I am missing the extra mana and lower spell failure rate from clarity, but am hoping this choice will prove more useful in the long run.

On 10.2.2007 13:02 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
Moria levels are actually not quite like themed levels - you can get several moria levels in one game, but themed levels (like the warlords one) only appear once per game at most.

Using the lamp does negate a lot of the unlight advantage - when I play these, I just don't light areas.

I find necros a struggle until about clev 30, when they become awesomely powerful.

On 10.2.2007 22:08 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Are you sure about the Moria level? I've never had more than one and it has always had the exact same layout with similar monsters at the same points. Plus it asked if I was sure I wanted to exit as the level would not be generated again...

On 11.2.2007 00:37 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Just had to skip another themed level too at AR20 - I think it was the WarLords one, but had to leave before I got the feeling. Darn...

On 13.2.2007 13:05 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
OK, I get it now. There are two things - the Mines of Moria themed level (which you've just encountered) and moria levels, which just have ragged shape rooms and lots of orcs, trolls, ogres etc. I have never seen the Mines of Moria when playing, but have had heaps of moria levels.

On 13.2.2007 13:17 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
That's the one! Funny you've never had it. This is my fourth char to make it this far and I've had that level on at least three of them if not all.

Contemplating a third attempt at Mim as there was a WB Dagger of Doriath in the weapon shop to buff up my acid resist. Stealth was heroic even before that, so I'm doing very well at sneaking up and then dispelling everything in sight!

Now at CL30 - will hopefully get a chance to update the dump soon.

On 13.2.2007 13:19 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Btw just had my first ever Moria level, so I know what you're talking about too now! Previously I'd had cave areas within levels, but this seemed to be the whole level.

Nice work. That bow looks to me like it might be worth using.

On 14.2.2007 10:33 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Now the fun has really started!

Mim just rolled over this time. I ditched the lamp, quaffed a !oSpeed & !orAcid, found a dark corridor and pelted him to death with mana bolts - no healing required.

Since the dump I have made a start on Nargothrond and had possibly the easiest ride of clearing a level I have ever had. It was another Moria theme level - you don't see one for months and then you get two at once! I didn't wake up a single bad guy until it was too late for them - I could clear anything evil in LoS within about 3-4 turns. Unfortunately I ran out of ID so I set up a macro to destroy anything I was stood on - no artifacts emerged though. How I long for the ID spell...

Stench of Death is a nice spell, though the info is a little confusing (why have hit~ instead of rad?). After empowering it currently does 47+d47 to all life in LoS, attempt to confuse everything in LoS and a 98 damage radius 9 ball of poison... sweet.

I like the fact that all these dispel spells kill off monsters that you can't even see at the time! Consequently I don't think the bow will be of much use as I can't target very well in the dark! While I think about it - if I have a weapon with plite will this spoil unlight for me or do I get a small amount of grace (I seem to remember seeing somewhere that unlight reduces light radius?).

On 14.2.2007 11:46 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
I'm tempted to go home to get my lamp... this wandering around in unilluminated rooms just doesn't feel right and you just don't see the non-evil bad guys (if that makes sense!) coming (I *HATE* all those hounds!). With telepathy or some better detection spells (particularly for monsters/objects) it would be a bit better.

One more question on unlight... if I've quaffed a potion of enlightenment does that count as a lit square?

On 14.2.2007 12:35 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
That sounds exactly like my moria level experience - literally too much loot. The Stench of Death info should say rad, dunno why it doesn't. Also, try it on the Queen Ant when you meet her - it is just _ideal_. Plite - I think Unlight just kills the light and it has no effect - the Unlight bonuses are only cancelled if you wield a light in the light slot. And I _think_ emlightenment doesn't count as lighting the square, but I'm not sure.

Just had to TL out of the Dire Wolves level and spawned in a series of rooms full of assorted hounds - talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire! I had to TL again but not before a kindly nexus hound swapped my CHR and CON for a cool 70HP gain!

Had to pass up the elements speical level now - they are all coming to soon for my character, who just hasn't got the mana reserves for them (and no !oRM yet).

Artifacts have been thin on the ground so far, but have just found a nice pair of cesti - +3 to Magical devices, rFire, rAcid and Hold Life - shame the weight costs me 25MP else I would wear them...

On 15.2.2007 10:32 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Meant to say that I passed up the special level almost straight away because my _oTeleport got burnt up by the first monster I met. Once I was surrounded and my mana nearly exhausted I cast TL, the plan being to recall and purchase teleport. However I now find myself on a superb level - this is just too tempting... wish me luck!

Well that's the last time I make such an ill-advised comment... smiling on me indeed - more like rubbing his hands in gleeful anticipation!

Just a few steps further into the vault from where I took the dump, my adventure was cut short. As far as I was aware with my limited detect evil spell there was just a couple of skeletons left in two siderooms. I walked out of the room I was in and there next to me was a SKY DRAKE - what on earth was that doing there at this level?!!! Not sure what their native depth is, but that was seriously unfair (especially as I can't detect them!). It breathed... 347HP down to 34HP - that was close I thought... oh... it's a double move... the sky drake claws you. You die.

OW. Native to 70, so 34 levels out of depth; max ood for greater vaults is 40. So technically legal, but unlucky.

If it's any consolation, I've got through 3 Grey-Elf Paladins, half a dozen Dark-Elf Rogues and an Easterling Assassin in the last couple of days. And one of the rogues died from teleporting into a tree...
