I usually don't post a character before getting a golden ~, but I just needed to vent and say that it has been tremendously hard to get an Adan character to just stay alive. I suppose one way might be to stock up on the speed potions and make a sprint towards Amon Rudh, where the monster level is slightly less insane and there are fewer wide open spaces. Getting blinded, or worse, confused more than 20 spaces away from the stairs results in almost certain death.

Any suggestions?

You can teleport level from town to go to underworld 1, but that will stop being useful after the newness of a character wears off. Teleport level used in the wilderness will take you to the underworld (or a mountaintop) of the same strength as the wilderness you tl'ed from. You can also fall through a trap door to the underworld as well. A level 20 underworld is kinda tough too, but I don't think as deadly as the wilderness since the monsters tend to run the ogre, orc variety and the dungeon walls are comforting and familiar. Beware the large chambers. Anyway, make sure you have lots of teleporty stuff because it can get hairy fast. Um, sorry if you already new about the underworld and awesome job with the 3 daggers of Doriath. Too bad the merchant will give you horrible prices from them, but horrible is better than dirt poor! Oh yeah, you can wor out of an underworld/mountaintop, but if you wor back you will be in the middle of the wilderness so beware.

This confirms what has been becoming obvious for some time - wilderness is too hard for some character types. My only additional advice to HMs in the current version is fairly unhelpful; try a race which starts somewhere easier, or keep trying this one with cheesy tactics - stairscum, townscum for CCW and teleport scrolls, etc. The next version will take steps to address this problem. Ideas for this include drastic reduction in number of monsters, especially pack monsters. _especially_ hounds; ability to get some sort of temporary blindness and/or confusion resistance from the town (temple maybe, or home); some means of hiding in the wilderness; some means of escaping when surrounded besides phase or teleport (dodging past or something like that). Any ideas gratefully welcomed.

Oh, and the ~ you're looking for is blue :)

Thanks for the suggestions. A blue ~, that's novel (to me). :)

I'm not sure if this is at all possible, but here's one. The wilderness I've seen includes roads. Is it possible for monsters to spawn away from those roads (except for "p" monsters)? I'm guessing that would make a bit more sense. The deadliest thing about the wilderness is the combination of pack breathers and wide open spaces. I'm not quite sure what could be done about this. Perhaps it could be possible to reduce the chance of breathing in the wilderness?

One minor annoyance in shops is that I the prompts go like this:
Quantity (0-x) ++/--/ESC: 1
-more-
What do you offer? [accept] ['y'/'n']
Is there an option somewhere to set default of the offer to 'y', so I can just hit [g,d,enter, enter] to buy one item of d? I hope this does not come off as whining but it seems to me an unnecessary departure from [O] to have to confirm purchases. I'm not a kid anymore, let me max out my credit! :P

Yes, that's another good thought. One other thing you could try for now - head out of town to the north. This is forest, so less open spaces; you also get a bonus to hit in forests. On the negative side, this is the wrong direction for Amon Rudh, and some monsters will be going through the trees faster than you. It may be a chance to build up a little experience/gear before heading south, though.

As for the shop thing, my apologies. I added that at the last minute when I realised it was impossible to back out of buying when using only the mouse, but it's made shopping really irritating. It will change to a better system in the next version.

I wouldn't be too hasty here. Yes, the wilderness is overloaded - but there is a big balance question if you implement some of those other ideas.

The races I've played seriously (to at least CL20+) have been the High-Elf (mage, necro, ranger) and Druadan (rogue). I've chosen these races because of the massive benefits they have and there has to be someway of balancing this. In V I'd have a big XP penalty on the HE which I'm stuck with for the entire game whilst in FA this takes the form of a particularly tricky start, but once you are through that you have some serious advantages.

I must say, though the initial game is a bit scummy (no way to avoid that without dying horribly), I love the thrill of sneaking around knowing that if that monster wakes up whilst I'm grabbing the nearby loot then I'm in trouble! Then the thrill of IDing the object to see if it was worth all the risk! If you are going to make the wilderness easier for powerful characters, such as High Elves or the Edain - then you are going to have to penalise them in another way for balance-sake.

I can sympathise with torsoboy's plight though. I imagine an Adan Warrior without elvish movement through the trees, a Druadan's telepathy or a spell caster's detection has a much harder time around Ephel Brandir. With a Druadan starting in EB, I'd aim to make the trek to Gondolin during either the first or second night to move home there, but that is probably too much to ask. Your best bet is scumming Underworld 1 for speed potions (definitely have autoscum on!) and then after stocking up on TL, PD, Teleport and CCW, turn off autoscum, wait until nightfall (so even the hounds start asleep) and then make a dash to Amon Rudh.

Si

PS I agree about the shopping irritation!

After a hundred or more dead HE starters, you've got my sympathies, Dominic, but I'm with Si here - tweaking the wilderness too much might make HEs and Edain far too munchkinish once they get going.
Probably the best tactic is to go with an easier race to start with - a Longbeard or maybe an Ent are good Warrior choices. Adan is one of the toughest to start with because of the slow movement through trees and lack of telepathy, and the lack of decent shops...

(I find HE decently balanced, though - maybe expand EB or at least give it a spellbook shop to give Edain/Druedain a better starting chance)

PS Hurrah for changing the shops back, Nick - another one for the Complainer!
