My first Ent and what an interesting race they are! I just love forests now!

You may wonder why I haven't taken a speciality yet - truth is I can't make up my mind. I think I would quite like to try Mim with Mana Burn, but if I find telepathy before I get to AR30 then Unlight would probably be the best way forward.

Yeah, forests are huge fun for ents. Ironic that the one basic resist you can't find is Fire...

Heh, the idea of an Ent being an assassin in a dungeon (or anywhere, bar a forest) is wonderfully surreal.

I have to admit that Assassin (and Rogue) are the classes that don't appeal at all - what do you do if your back-stab on that D doesn't kill it in one go? Nice to see an unusual character starting well, though...

(got another cliche-ed High-Elf Mage to post up, and then starting some Priests after the presumed YASD)

Must admit that the idea of an ent assassin tickled me too!

Anyway decided on Mana Burn and dived straight down to AR29. I then recalled and swapped out all my good kit ready for a hand-to-hand battle with Mim. He was a pushover with Mana Burn! The fight was over almost as quickly as it began, so I took unlight and recalled back to collect my stuff and trek over to Nargothrond where I'm currently diving again. I've just realised that I can probably get three blows with Turmil now, so I will pick that up on my next home visit.

Btw something odd happens in the forests with hobbit slingers and Gaveronian Huntsladies. Despite not being able to see me in melee when I'm standing right next to them, they have no problems with ranged combat - seems a bit odd.

OK, I'll have a look at that one. BTW, the problem with shooting things in trees and rubble will be there for throwing weapons too - fixed for next version, but beware for now.

Regarding the question about assassins, combat-wise the stats suggest they are not that much worse than warriors in melee - though they have penalties for using heavy weapons (to be honest that seems a little silly with an ent though!). The idea for this character was to use a strong melee race and play as a warrior with the strong bonuses of mana burn and unlight.

I nearly lost Jim a few minutes ago. I stupidly crept into a greater vault without SI or rBlind and a Serpent of the Brownlands and a ghost woke up at the same time. I was instantly blinded but got lucky with a mana burn hit to instakill the ghost. However that is where my luck ran out. As well as the deficits mentioned earlier I was also lacking TA or a _oTeleport! I was blinded every turn so couldn't use my scrolls and meleeing just left my HP decreasing fast. Thankfully I paused (for once!), assessed my options, quaffed a !oSpeed and managed to remember which square the sleeping Gaveronian Champion was occupying to make a run out of the vault, quaff a CCW and then read a ?TL. Phew.

I still haven't found a weapon upgrade! Turmil still comes in at just 2 blows which doesn't touch my trident yet. I found Holhenneth which means I get rBlind and SI at the expense of rConf and rSound.

I'm now CL30 and had dived down to DL37 - however Quiet Jim was feeling a little OoD there with autoscum on, so I turned it off for now and life is a little more manageable again! However on taking an up staircase I found myself in the Warlords themed level. I think this is the first time I have been here with rBlind (which is what prevented Psiren from clearing it) and also the first time I have been able to scrap it out with the welcoming committee (ie. not taking the stairs again or teleporting!). I'm through around 1/3 of the level now and have found some welcome stat potions but nothing else so far - here's hoping that a decent weapon shows up!

My experiences are similar - I've once managed to clear most of it, but mostly just get hammered by all the h's coming though the trees and have to leg it or die.

I've now cleared all the left hand side of the level, currently working on the bottom right-hand corner. I've knocked off Erotars and I can see Shelob lurking nearby - if I clear the rest of the level I will come back for her.

Cleared the Warlords level for the first time! Nothing notable except for stat potions (did find the pearl and a pair of gloves but neither is of use to me).

I am soooooo in trouble now.

Quiet Jim was unhappy with the spread of evil through his beautiful forests so made the dangerous trip across the plains to Dorthonion via Menegroth. He'd already found Thalkettoth and a !oExp when on finding and reading a ?oAcq he was furnished with Narsil... an Ent with Fire Immunity.

I am soooooo in trouble now.

On 19.4.2007 12:57 clayton_sean@yahoo.ie wrote:
Very nice - just watch out for that RNG. I don't think I've ever had a !ofExp in FA and I've certainly not found Narsil yet...

I'm running an Ent too (another Ent Priest) - I'll put the char dump up tonight but I'm regretting trying to get to Menegroth the hard way - via Dor Dinen. I assumed that it'd be lovely forests from Thargelion but it's plains all the way so far - eek...

It would be far too easy if it was all forest. It feels cheesy enough running around Dorthonion 46 knocking off uniques and collecting loot as it is...

Speaking of which I've just added the Torque of Boromir and a ring of Eregion...

Now back to diving down in Nargothrond and currently down to DL40. Quiet Jim is finding it a lot easier this time with Narsil by his side. His biggest hitting weapon is actually the HA Trident (1d12) but Narsil has too many other benefits to swap - I wonder if the difference is down to the light weapons bonus?

I'm now up to 5 blows and have just found Celegorm's bow so I've swapped that in for its many pluses - I never really used the crossbow anyway.

Upgraded to 0.2.3. Second Wilderness level contained a grave yard! It looked the same as the one you get in dungeons unless my eyes were mistaken. If it wasn't for being 'hidden' this would have been very dangerous as all the undead are generated awake!

Had one crash after taking out a dragon pit - there were 40 objects on the square I tried to pick up from and the game just hung - should you be able to get that many items on one square? Thankfully my save point was just a few dragons earlier and I wa fine with the square with 36 items on which still seems very high!

On 22.4.2007 02:37 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
Now you know why I made GWVs rare...

I had a crash just before I released 0.2.3 (I hate it when that happens) on aiming a wand of wonder at a dragon. The game managed a panic save, and when I reloaded the game the dragon was gone, but whether teleported or destroyed by bug I don't know. I don't know whether this is something I've just introduced (although I can't think what), or an older one - I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it happens again.

Was exploring a superb level at Nar51 and wondering what was so superb about it until I found a certain 4d5 longsword... I then dived straight for Glaurung who only lasted a handful of melee rounds. I'm now diving down T-I-G.

Question is what do I take for my third speciality? I'm currently thinking Armsman for the additional chance of a critical, however I would appreciate anybody else's insights at this stage!

The other good find was the gloves, +3 Dex/Magic Mastery and rDisenchant being the highlights. This took me up to 6 blows and improved my mana no end as I can wear them without penalty due to the Magic Mastery. Only problem is now rChaos (again!) - I'm also missing rSound but I don't see that as being such an issue.

I must say that 'slip into the shadows' is a killer spell. I'm wondering if it might be overpowered?

I'm now in YADCV... the last time hound, annoyingly, reduced all my stats. I took out Baphomet which was the toughest fight for a while because he breathed force three times in four turns and I've now spotted Aduphanel. This is the first time I've come across a 'ringwraith' (sorry Nick) with a melee character and I've got this bad feeling that they can nerf your weapons - though this may be a ToME thing.

Is it safe for me to melee with Ringil or should I hunt around for a different weapon for this fight? Also any warriors types with suggestions for my last speciality would be gratefully listened to!

Just found another of the new vaults (again complete with mushroom patches) - however this one had a ridiculous run of lava on each side if you want to reach the middle sections. Absolutely no point taking it on if you want any of your paper or wooden consumables to be intact by the time you get in. That one may work in V with fire immunity protecting your goods perhaps - but not sure it is one for FA.

Had my speciality decision made for me. I found Nevrast and Hithlum for a massive HP gain, stealth and speed - however it took me down to 5 blows with Ringil. Athletics sorted that one out!

Killed the White Balrog chappy in the bubble vault who dropped Dor-Lomin. This would usually be an instant swap in for me, but sadly my spell failure rate on Bloodwrath went from 25% to 95%! Guess I'm going to have to hope for The Necklace to turn up before I can use my favourite helm!

Now down to Ang88 and in the middle of my first GCV. I've also crossed Gothmog off my list of 'must kill before Ang100'... Had my first battle with the Tarrasque and decided to save him for later when I have some more favourable consumables for the job.

I'm undecided about the vaults at present. I'm not really bothering with any of them at the moment - except GCVs and bubble vaults for the potential eq. I'd like to keep my XP down this time!

Melee all the way. I "slip into the shadows" whilst I prepare the ground, take up the best position and buff up with Bloodwrath (Berserk + Haste) and Black blessing (Blessed) and then hack, hack, hack. Mana Burn is awesome. I have been known to throw a weapon to wake the uniques up and lure them into my tunnels, but that has been it. Current experience suggests that Assassin would be the ideal diving char - melee only second to a warrior (if I understand the edit files!), brilliant detection spells, mana burn, unlight and superstealth from a town book.

Now down to Ang92 where I can see a chest vault - no doubt the remaining uniques are in there so I may take out a few more. Had a nasty experience in the last GCV... Ancalagon has the same tile as a Nightwing - I had quite a surprise when I hit the former! I'll be more prepared next time and try and take him down.

Cantoras (probably my nemesis in these games!) proved the toughest fight to date. He could see right through my superstealth, which was an unpleasant surprise! He took me down to about 130HP at one point, but thankfully my 1% fail rate on shadow shifting did not let me down and took me out of the vault (and not next to the Lord of Flesh who was waiting nearby!). I killed him at the second attempt. I can see the Tarrasque waiting in a cell, so I'll have another go at him whist I'm here...

Dawndeath, Hoarmurath, Ancalagon and the Lord of Flesh have since departed. Had a go at Wiruin, but my arrows barely scratched him - looks like I may need to melee him which is a bit scary...

I now find myself on the most challenging level of perhaps all time... my first sighting of the High Temple of the Underworld vault (helpfully described in the edit file as probably more tough than fighting Morgoth!). There are also various lesser vaults - one of which has released gnawing bugs which are multiplying and eating through everything. I should just flee the level now, but superstealthing it through the greater vault is sooooo tempting...

Did the sensible thing and fled. Wiruin is down now. Melee was not so bad as I knocked out his mana before he tried casting. Only downside was losing a load of my potions to his frost attacks. I'd like to lose the Emperor Q before attempting Morgoth.

The Emperor Q is no more. If the battery on my PDA holds out, I may well attempt Morgy on the commute home...

Well I stood upon my Rune of Protection and Morgoth just danced around me gathering his power. He never land a single blow or attempted a summons. Probably just as well as I was only at +15 speed for most of the fight after he blasted my mind early on!

Nice to get a sub CL50 win (in the end it was the XP creeping up that made up my mind to go for Morgoth rather than hang on for more speed!). Morgoth's AI needs a bit of tweaking and "slip into the shadows" probably needs a bit of nerfing.

Alright! Sub 50 and an assassin, w00t! Yeah, I noticed the same thing with runes of protection and Morgy... something is going on there.

Nice work. I always think lowest winner on the ladder is the best position. I'll have to think about the "slip into the shadows" issue.

Slip into the shadows is a fantastic concept and really changes the way you play the game. Being able to sneak past monsters is definitely a good thing.

I haven't got the source code here to check how it works at present, but I assume there is something like a small chance that an awake monster will see you each turn you are hidden. I also seem to remember that it only affects monsters who are less than twice your CL (what level is Cantoras? - he seemed to see right through it). Anyway here some recommendations:

1. Keep it the same for sleeping monsters.
2. Increase the chance that an awake monster will see you (some function of the difference between your level and its level)
3. Any monster that may have telepathy should definitely be able to see you regardless.
4. Wall tunnelling should break your cover (I mean how can you do that stealthily!)
5. Monsters with a good sense of smell may have a better chance of finding you.
6. Currently missile launchers can see you perfectly well when you are hidden, which is clearly wrong.
