I wanted to start a paladin on this computer, but found an old save file - Luthien. I looked at it: level 20, free action, base resists and one of the high mage books; ok, why not play this mage instead. Checked macros - weird, F1 was *tf, it should be magic missile for a mage. I corrected that and played on, soon getting better items and the first stat potions. Then I found this artifact bow in a minor pit - +3 attacks, too bad I´m a mage - but look!, resist confusion too which I was lacking, so it got wielded.
A couple dex potions later I saw 8 melee attacks with my +3 attacks weapon - weird, I thought mages got maximum 4 attacks, maybe that changed with the new version.
The first checkerboard vault appeared (always a turning point, be it for the better or worse), I was lucky to manage to teleport out all the nasties and was in the process of deciding what to keep and what to leave behind from all the great loot when finally it dawned on me - my "mage" was actually a ranger!

Its really annoying, I like to play with random artifacts, but I find way more of them than *id* scrolls.
This issue has come up in the forums/usenet but apparently not many people use that option. Having the alchemist stock *Id* (at least when "randomized artifacts" are turned on) should be a quick and easy fix.
There is still the matter of "degrading" artifacts, so a complete overhaul of their generation would probably be good.

Youre right though, a setup for more speed would be better, even at the cost of res disn. The int ring is a remainder of her "mage days" - remember I played this lass thinking she was a mage for her last ~15 character levels. I used damage spells and the occasional melee, never the bow.
