First time playing Angband for about 6 years, thought I might share my character on the ladder.

Hope I've uploaded him correctly.

Nothing too special here (for now...) Cautiously spent a couple of hours wandering around the easiest levels brutalising kobolds and miscellaneous beasts to make money and gain experience. Haven't found any exciting items yet, apart from spotting a useful helmet of seeing at a shop which chewed up my life savings.

Chose a gnome because I have un-fond memories of dying from paralysis all too frequently last time I played.

Wish Vegnar luck! Dispite his gnome-sized Stallonesque bod', he's still young and inexperienced, and he didn't pick up the rest of his kin's aptitude for magic.

More progress for the mighty gnome warrior Vegnar!

Found the phial, and a Lucern Hammer of Venom, and carrying around a stack of potions of speed.

No enemy can withstand Vegnar!

Looks good. Your equipment and level is fine to proceed down to stat gain.. you'll want to get some scrolls or (better) a staff of teleport to escape in an emergency, though.

Vegnar continues his progress.

Slowly continuing his descent, he hasn't found any artifacts yet apart from the phial, but he has found a defending short sword and a defending longsword which I alternate, depending how many attacks he can get.

Finally found a decent cloak - of protection. Good enough for now.

Bosses aren't too challenging. Vegnar quaffs a potion of speed, shoots the boss with his heavy crossbow before carving them up in melee. A primitive, but effective tactic at this stage of the game.

On 30.3.2008 03:33 erobjt@hotmail.com wrote:
Vegnar smash puny angband monsters!

Hit level 30. Due to intrinsic resist fear, Vegnar now no longer pees his pants at the sight of novice paladins!

Still no artifacts found yet, but I did pick up a *better* defending shortsword which does 2d7 damage instead of 1d7, and I found a Dwarven Augmented Chainmail in the Black Market which nicely shot his AC up.

Also found a mighty heavy crossbow which perforates enemies very effectively, but still do more damage in melee.

Still need to find better boots, gauntlets and cloak. Well... better everything really.

Slain every boss he's encountered fairly easily. One of the magic dwarves I encountered disenchanted my Crossbow and Shield a bit, which was a pain.

Thanks for the advice protomech. I picked up a bunch of teleport scrolls at the black market, and have a pile of teleport staffs in my home for later.

Vegnars infravision of 90' is very useful. Its poor mans telepathy basically. With his ok stealth, I can saunter around a room picking off monsters without waking them all up, and not have to worry about any unexpected surprises ('less of course, they're undead...)

Will Vegnar eventually get more shots per round due to level, or is that only applied in Zangband?

Extra shots only apply to rangers. (In NPP, you get them with rogues, as well--NPP rogue is a wonderful class.)

Vegnar has finally found a few artifacts. Nothing earth shattering yet, but Celegorm is nice. The other artifacts are a couple of elemental daggers which are lying about in Vegnars house.

Had a particularly profitable but arduous battle with Gorgon the Medusa and her cretins. Unfortunately the moment she died, a hydra breathed and incinerated all of her drops. Regrettable.

Vegnar hasn't had many close shaves yet, but I was surprised how much damage gravity hounds could do to him. Several of them breathed on him simultaneously, blasting him out of the area with his HP down under 30% (my red zone)

On 30.3.2008 17:41 erobjt@hotmail.com wrote:
Graagh! Vegnar *grind* filthy trollish troglodytes into powder!

Vegnar was unimpressed with the Scythe of Slicing he picked up. Although he looked like a miniature grim reaper, he found he could butcher enemies much faster with his short sword (defender), although its defenses are somewhat redundant due to Celegorm. Vegnar would like to find a better weapon. Something with spikes.

Need better gauntlets and boots also. With spikes.

The ring of lightning is a useful tool. Vegnar fails with it about one time in two, but its good for zapping whatever is cowering in the back, or just electrocuting beasties in a cluster. Very rarely actually kills anything though.

Gnome is a surprisingly effective race for a warrior I'm finding. Vegnar has a magic device skill worth a damn, and he can disarm most traps effectively. The shabby search and perception skills are a non-issue because of his liberal use of his rod collection.

The strength penalty wasn't much of an problem, the dexterity bonus makes Vegnar smile, and he was less hideous initially than any dwarf, half-orc or half-troll.

Resist poison is going to be essential very soon. Ancient multi-hued dragons (AMHD) will breathe for ~700 poison damage, drolems will breath for ~800 poison damage. AMHDs are native to 2150', drolems are native to 2200'.. so if you go much deeper you might run into one taking a stroll.

Be careful about relying on scrolls of teleport without confusion resist :)

Bruuugh! Vegnar decimate gutless angband hordes and take all, leaving nothing for the grieving next of kin!

Thanks Protomech. Vegnars been down to about level 35, which I guess is (doing math) 1750', confusion and poison resist are on my wish list

Vegnar plunder the enemy!

Found a robe of permanance. Might be useful later on when I face more life draining and disenchantment attacks. Probably will stick with the Dwarven armour until then. Also found a cubragol, but might be better off with my cloak of protection for now due to res shards.

Need a superior weapon

Vegnar armoured to the teeth and carrying big axe!

Last time in the dungeon discovered The Beaked Axe of Hurin, a weapon with a noble history and a bloody future, apparently. Who was Hurin anyway? Who cares? If it was is important as its cracked up to be, it should never have fallen into Gnomish hands. Moo hoo ha ha.

Vegnar tells me he intends to activate the weapon on a regular basis.

Hurins axe replaces a Tulwar of Gondolin, which was marginally better than the defender short sword Vegnar was using. Unfortunately Vegnars stats aren't quite marvellous enough to warrant a 6th attack with Hurin... yet.

Vegnar still needs quality gauntlets and boots, no luck so far. He's starting to wear the robe of permanance now, even though it hurts his AC by about 21 points. He's sick of getting experience drained, and he's getting paranoid about disenchantment beasts. The sustains are a plus.

Oh... found a poison resist ring in the BM, now just need to get confusion resist.

On 31.3.2008 12:22 erobjt@hotmail.com wrote:
Which is better?

Speed +5 or Damage +13? Vegnars not nearly as effecient a killer using the speed ring, but he feels safer to play.

On 31.3.2008 14:51 protomech wrote:
Hurin does 3d5 (10.5 ave) base dice normally, 9d5 (31.5 ave) against trolls, dragons, acid-weak, 15d5 (52.5 ave) against demons.

(10.5 + 27) * 5 = 187 // 292 trolls, dragons, acid-weak, 397 demons
At 1.5 actions per game turn (+5 speed)

vs

(10.5 + 40) * 5 = 252 // 357 trolls, dragons, acid-weak, 462 demons
At 1.0 actions per game turn (+0 speed)

Speed wins for damage per game turn. If you get more speed later on, say +7 to +10 without the ring, you may want to switch back .. but probably you'll find another source of poison resist.

What effect does Berserk have exactly?

On 1.4.2008 05:36 protomech wrote:
berserk grants the following effects:
* heals 30 hp and fear
* resistance to fear
* +24 to-hit
* -10 ac

The +24 to-hit stacks with +12 to-hit from heroism and +10 to-hit from blessing / holy chant / holy prayer, so you can get a maximum of +46 to-hit from temporary buffs.

Vegnar the Gnome Champion strong.
Vegnar the Gnome Champion quick.
Vegnar the Gnome Champion handsome!

Maxed those three stats, and finally got some decent handware, Cesti of Agility (+2) from the friendly folk at the Black Market. Vegnar their best customer! That +2 gave him just enough to get 6 attacks per round.

Slaughtering everything in his path. Kevlax the Many Headed got me down to 200 at one point, so I retreated, returned, and stomped him into fine grade mush.

The only other thing Vegnar wary about are the hounds. Vegnar got smashed by some gravity hounds who managed to make him heavily stunned. Retreated. Returned. Recycle.

Vegnars become something of a mushroom connosiur, eating all mushrooms, even the bad ones, since he has sustain across the board. Probably not the best habit to get in to, I noticed that eating mushies of disease does actually hurt him.

Still on the hunt for some boots.

Vegnar *LIKES* Hurins axe. Liberal use of Berserk makes life no fun for ratbaggy monsters!

If you can add nexus, confusion, and sound resistance .. and then pick up more speed.. you'll be pretty much set for the end-game.

Watch out for stun from gravity hounds and mystics.

You have a stun counter, decreased each round.

Stun has 3 phases:
* 1-50 : stunned. +15% spell failure, -5 to-hit, -5 damage
* 51-100 : heavily stunned. +25% spell failure, -20 to-hit, -20 damage
* 101+ : knocked out. game over, unless you are obscenely lucky.

Master and grandmaster mystics can easily take you from 0 stun to "heavily stunned" in a single combat round, and have a non-zero chance to knock you out in a single hit.

Great Wyrms can breathe for a ton of damage.. Dracolisks breathe for nearly 1200 damage, nearly 400 with fire resistance. Greater Hell Wyrms hurt even more. Double resistance or fire immunity is the way to go, for low-hp characters.

A good run though .. and a reminder to brush up on my own situational awareness :)

Yeah, I was pretty sad.

Vegnar was invading a vault, and had just about slain Eol the Dark Elf when the breath weapon caught him.

Worst thing was that I thought I was playing pretty safe. He was hasted, taking on the enemies effortlessly and had a good 300 odd hit points remaing.

It was the classic "It breaths, you die."
