I just started playing ToME again on a whim the other day. I tend to play lostsouls more than any other type of character, and lost a lot of them, but this was the first to advance to beyond level 28 or so, and he ended up making it all the way out of the Halls of Mandos at level 50 with decent equipment, then all the way all over the world to eventually win. Huzzah!
