This is my first moderately successful Harry -- I raced down the stairs to level ~16 a few times, and now I am recalling down and hoping that I find FA before lack of it kills me.

I turned connected stairs off because otherwise I will be too tempted to stairscum, especially with long stairs...

Things are progressing well, and I just bought a huge stack of !speed from the black market. On the other hand, still no free action...

I finally got free action after a couple of close calls. I don't know what the randart armor does, but it is far too heavy to use right now regardless, especially since nexus hounds decided to swap my strength and intelligence.

I might dive a littile deeper soon... does anyone know the best depth in O to find stat potions?

STR, DEX and CON are rare at 1500', and more common at 2000'. INT and WIS are 250' deeper.

Thanks -- I just dived to 2000' and have started to find STR/DEX/CON potions more frequently.

Harry continues to make progress. Thranduil and Faramir were great finds, and stats are looking good. A better weapon would be nice, but I can't really complain with that xbow...

Hats off to you sir for getting back to the top of the ladder. I'm also mightily impressed by how quickly you've managed to raise your key stats - do you have any particular method (that you're willing to divulge!) for coming by so many stat potions?

The only method I use that might not be completely standard is constant use of object detection. Until quite recently, I tried to carry a staff of object location with me all the time, even going so far as to recharge it with scrolls occasionally. (Then I realized that my mana regeneration was easily fast enough to switch to casting detect magic instead.) I think that most of the stat potions were just found lying on the ground (and often vaults contain a few), and the detection helps a lot in finding them quickly.

I also seem to have been lucky in the INT/WIS potion distribution -- INT potions have been plentiful, but I found my first WIS potion in my last descent! Maybe I can die of cursing...

Level 40. Now I need to choose another specialty... any suggestions? I've never played an assassin this deep before...

You're a braver man than I, using an aggravating weapon!

I'd say it is between:

Athletics - your Con and Dex could do with the improvement
Fury - speed is hard to come by in O, so the boosts can be useful
Fast Attacking - extra blows are always nice

On 19.11.2008 16:50 evariste wrote:
Gurthang doesn't aggravate in O -- I wouldn't even consider it if it did. I actually haven't attacked anyone with Gurthang yet, so I might decide to switch back to Careth Asdriag after I've tried Gurthang out...

Yeah, I was mainly just considering the melee specialties and Athletics (though the DEX would not be all that useful). How does Armsman compare with Fast Attacking? At the moment I'm probably most tempted to take Fury, since I seem to remember that it translates into +5 speed or thereabouts much of the time...

On 19.11.2008 17:17 Psi wrote:
Armsman gives diminishing returns in the late game as you will be getting your 'bonus' criticals on the turns when you would be getting criticals anyway. Fast attacking and Fury are on an equal footing in terms of extra damage achievable (through extra blows per turn and extra blows because of more speed).

It must be Nick who added aggro then - I don't blame those Giant Paladins for cursing him.

Gurthang's quite a different sword in FA - based on Zarcuthra. I really should up it to 3d8, though.

I can't bear the suspense any longer... how is Harry?

Sorry, I was gone for the weekend and forgot to update this first. Harry is still alive and progressing, though not quite as quickly as I might wish. I'll update shortly.

Harry is looking very strong, but he is getting bored waiting for better gear. I feel like I am wasting a fair amount of time killing D's and uniques without getting much in the way of drops, but I don't feel strong enough to fight Morgoth yet... and I don't really know what is involved in killing Morgoth as an assassin.

On 25.11.2008 03:32 evariste wrote:
Also, the treasures-replace-objects-as-drops feature is very annoying... does anyone know whether this means that it might be better not to have dived quite as deep as this Harry has?

Possibly. At least Sauron will be in depth :)

If you've taken out Gothmog, you are certainly not far off Morgoth. As for your turncount... that is nothing short of phenomenal for O.

It was straightforward enough to melee Gothmog with frequent use of Cure Mortal Wounds, but I'm concerned about Morgoth's stat draining. If I had Anarion, I would seriously start to consider the battle, I think. Or maybe I should consider archery?

Why is O so much slower than FA? It certainly seems slower, but I'm not sure exactly why... and I keep expecting FA-phenomenal turncounts from you to wipe out my lead in the competition. :-)

On 25.11.2008 10:37 Psi wrote:
FA is quicker because...

Wilderness vaults provide good kit
With good stealth and utilising nightfall you can get to Ang58 fairly safely and there are always good things there
You can start as a Druadan with telepathy or an advanced race with an ego weapon
You don't have the silly 'shallow monsters drop gold instead of items' feature
There are multiple towns and multiple recall points so you are less likely to run out of consumables...
...which you can order from a merchant anyway
Recall depth can be reset to a more sensible point
Elvenkinds etc can have multiple extra resists

If I can get an early speed find then I'll give you a run for your money, but your current rate seems too fast for me otherwise... I keep losing characters taking risks trying to keep up with the CL/DL in your notes...

On 25.11.2008 18:18 Psi wrote:
...and the other thing I would add is this char has an awful starting Dex. If I was rolling my own, I ensure an internal stat of around 16-17. That way you can squeeze out a third blow with a heavier weapon a lot quicker than you can here.

Well, Harry died. Trying to kill Cantoras was rather foolish given that I knew that he had a chance of double-moving and killing me from full health (which was what eventually happened), but I was getting bored and decided that I really would ideally like to kill Cantoras before going after Morgoth... oh well. And he was at one star at the end, too.

At least I killed Sauron first... very easy battle, and I was rewarded with Camlost. :-)

Now I'll sit back and see how long this Harry remains in the lead in the competition...

On 25.11.2008 20:23 evariste wrote:
Those are good points about FA vs O, though I think the lesser number of items dropped is the largest issue. I never really understood about wilderness vaults in FA and tried to spend as little time as possible in the wilderness, and running out of consumables was never a problem in this game -- I just bought out the stores repeatedly until they had what I needed.

I agree with you that it is very difficult to get speed in O -- I was basically just searching for some way of getting to +30. Rings of speed seemed extremely rare, and I think I was probably lucky to get the +9 one... finding high boots of speed or one of the artifacts with a speed boost would help a lot in this competition.

On 26.11.2008 09:33 Psi wrote:
Unlucky. Cantoras is on my leave-well-alone list. I only go after him if I have a serious slay undead weapon and enough speed. However Gothmog is on there too and you didn't have too much trouble with him!

This presents me with a quandry now. Do I slow down, play cautiously and try and ensure the win or keep going in the knowledge that you might go and do this again... My current char is CL35 after 334k turns (mainly thanks to Finding Til-i-arc in a chest and then recalling next to a demon pit... a few XP short of 4 CLs in about 250 turns).

Yeah, a non-ring with nether resistance would have helped a lot. As it was I never felt that it was worth it to give up the speed, though it indeed might have saved this Harry... but Cantoras has other high-damage spells (mana storm, cursing), so it probably still would have been very risky to try to fight him.
