Why is this game so freaking hard?! My first go was a Half Titan who went into the Thieves Quest with 85hp and +3 speed, but got spanked! This guy will wait a bit longer, I guess ...

Barely ... good thing I brought some healing as those thieves were much faster than I, and hit pretty hard to boot. Lion Heart was pretty tough as well. I shudder at the thought of Wargs!!!

Actually, the Wargs quest aren't too bad in Nightmare. The Sewer, on the other hand... I've been skipping it and going directly to Tower to scum for money. Playing a race with immunity to Eldritch Horror is immensely useful.

Failed miserably! Wow! Maybe with 10 !Speed, 5 !Healing and 500hp I would have stood a chance! The gremlins nearly killed me, for crying out loud. And that Crocodile saw right thru my superstealth every move ... Hmmm, I wonder if superstealth is biffed somehow?

Anyway, I guess I'll just hang out in Angband and teleport like crazy. No way I could do the Orc Q.

Hi Dave! I wish I read your comment about the sewer before diving in. I very nearly died in there!! I'll need free action before the Tower ... And the vault is definitely out of the question, so I'll forfeit Sting, a very fine Ninja weapon.

Need ... more ... power! I survived my first nasty midnight blood curse. It wasn't that bad, but starting ninjas are pretty weak. On the good news front, Smeagol dropped Grimtooth, and I practiced up dual wielding on Granite Walls, achieving Excellent skill long before I usually do. An initial round of quartz veins helped, and I'll do another round just 'cause this game is so darn hard.

Oh, and born with 18/130 charisma again! 3 lives in a row ...

How are you handling the Midnight curses? I try to carry around an Antimagic amulet when I can, and resting at the Inn is also pretty bad (permanent drain to stats!)

What!? Permanent stat drains? You're kidding, right?

At the moment, I'm sucking 'em up. A couple statues recently. And normal stat drains. Some portals to raw mana (I love those). I can only generate about 170,000gp per day, so I think I'm about ready to stop. I like the antimagic amulet idea. Also, as a ninja, I can go hide in the walls, but that won't always help.

Hmmm ... dragons are normally tough, but not this tough. Even with acid immunity I can barely kill a Bile Wyrm. 8000hp is a bit high for me!

I don't think these are 100% accurate, but here are Zangband spoilers on nightmare mode:
http://www.zangband.org/spoilers/nightmare.txt

The monsters never miss is certainly not true. Is the monster spell damage is doubled true? I think a storm wyrm tagged me for 400hp damage while I was on a wall, and that seems double to me! I shudder to think that a mana storm from Nodens would do 1200hp damage!

[CL36:DL60] 04:34
OK, that's enough for now. This is crazy hard. Ninjas fight slowly in normal mode ... In nightmare, things take twice as long. Right now including accuracy issues, I'm probably only landing 160hp/round, not counting criticals. Against a bile wyrm, that's 50 rounds of attacks to kill, but for each attack round there are 3-4 other rounds of moves (One to quick walk away, 2 to berserk to recover 40hp or so, and 1 to move back). Figure 200 rounds to kill a bile wyrm! Of course, with criticals, it is not quite so bad as I sometimes get lucky and kill more quickly. Smaug was really tough! Glaurung, Fafner and beyond I won't even touch. Even a storm wyrm needs to be left alone without double resistance. Nuts!

Mook was a nice find though ...

Done! That was easier than I expected, probably because an early dragon dropped a +5 ring of speed. So I lost ESP dragon, but I think the speed is essential. At +11, I'm still a tad slower than most monsters, but I'm starting to keep up. Only 1 !Int and 2 !Chr though ... I was hoping for some !Con.

What makes ninjas a good choice for this build is there high intrinsic speed (+3 to begin, then +1 every 10 levels) and their superstealth. Also, hide in mud at CL32 really helps. Also, detect monsters really helps. Seriously. How would a detection-less character survive at all in nightmare mode? Answer: They wouldn't, as Garm would eat them on DL1 :)

What makes ninjas bad for this build is their piddly damage output. It'll get better as time goes on, and criticals become more common. Plus, some better weapons might help!

Map your [Down] arrow key into the following macro: 11111333332
Map your [Left] arrow key into the following macro: 77777111114
Map your [Up] arrow key into the following macro: 99999777778

This way, when you mash Right, then down, then left, then up, you leave the corner Quartz Vein alive, and they will reproduce for you 4 times as fast! (because of the 4 corners) Try it, but remember to unbind your keys when you're done ;-)

Oh, I suppose I could still be hanging out on DL23 trying to gather courage for the sure to be impossible DL24 quest monster (40 levels out of depth? 50?), but where's the fun in that ;) Killing Bile and Ice Wyrms, on the other hand, is splendid, and very challenging. Basically, one is mobbed by all sorts of nasties immediately, and needs to be careful of things as trivial as Death Drakes in this build.

And here's something you don't see every day: A whip wielding sexy ninja! Now, all I need is Gothmog ...

I'm gaining traction now. The dragons are dopping more quickly and my superstealth is working better. Next level gains Bunshin, which is the next power level jump for the ninja.

Wow, that wasn't bad at all. Random monsters were a Dreadmaster and a green jelly by the Bokrugs. By the queens, a wolf chieftan with a pack of blink dogs. The bokrugs got a couple Greater Basilisks, but my ninjitsu is really starting to kick in strong, and I just handled them despite a lack of resist nether. Fighting the Grendels was funny ... the 5 of them played musical chairs while I stood on the chasm, backing up to berserk, and taking turns hitting each as they got next to me, while the others couldn't wait to hop around the current victim and get some!

Best take was a combo of an amulet of resistance and Thalkettoth, which happily came with disenchantment resistance.

I wasn't sure how long I needed to wait for the pits. Eventually, my paranoia over playing without nexus resistance won out, and I went in at CL40. I probably could have done it sooner, but not too much sooner I think. Maybe CL38 at the minimum ...

I tried to descend in the Dragon's Lair, and made it down to DL63 before tucking tail to retreat. Basically, I need to cover sound and nether somehow ... especially nether.

And when I failed to kill Father Dagon, despite being +34 speed and CL43, I decided I needed to town scum a bit more. Oh, I could have killed him, its just that it would have required 30 minutes or so for me to clear his summons as well as the other nasty monsters that came over to play. When killing your average dragon takes more than 100 moves, its hard to handle mobs.

So, I sold all my spellbooks for 1.5 million gold, and townscummed another 50 days, picking up some nice weapons. I've nearly doubled my melee damage, so we'll see how that improves things. And I'm still looking for my first potion of constitution! In fact, not counting charisma, I've only found a single stat potion in the dungeon, and that was for intelligence. I've managed to buy 2 !str, 3 !dex and 1 !wis, however. But con would be nice ... At CL45 I guess I'll do my recall scum trick to get stat potions. There really seems to be no other way.

Oh, I almost forgot. Brand dropped his bow. I had a difficult time deciding whether I wanted to wear it. Hmmm ... should I swap out my awesome empty equipment slot for brand or not? That was a tough decision to make :)

Wandering about between DL55 and DL59 in Angband. Enlighten for resources. Kill anything in the way. I've found a bunch of !Int so maybe it will be possible to outrace the permanent stat drain effect. Wisdom seems less likely. And since there are no potions of constitution in nightmare mode, I guess I'll have to wear Tulkas or something ;) Well, I have another Con boost to pick at CL50.

I'm starting to forget the game is nightmare mode. I think that is a good sign that I am catching up to the double strength monsters. And I don't think their attacks or damage output is boosted at all. Just the double hp and the +5 speed, but I could be wrong ...

Well, I'll come back tomorrow to see if the RNG has changed its mind about those con potions.

Another greater vault (#3). This one was a winding checkerboard with The Destroyer, Raphael, Yog-Sothoth, Benedict, Corwin, Yig, GWoP, Gothmog, and maybe 15 other quality monsters. Ample destruction, but I killed Benedict and Corwin, displaying my ninja prowess! Plus, they were 2 of the record breaking 6 wanted amberite uniques. That leaves only Eric and Cain (or was it Bleys?) remaining. Both blood cursed, and one statue but no summons. Berserking ninjas are practically guaranteed to statue, so I should be more careful ;) The main take was Thranduil (Blindness) and Gilettar (High Plusses, Sound and Shards) which allowed me to swap in Himring (Nether) to finally, oh so finally, cover all resistances. I'm pretty sure monsters smart cheat in nightmare mode, so you darn well better not have an exploitable resistance hole!

I'll continue what I am doing. I should be able to kill all the uniques before hitting DL60 it seems. And at least the amberite blood curses are not quite so bad at this depth.

I decided if I was going to run into all these tough uniques at DL60, I might as well do it at DL90 where I at least have a chance for better goodies. Jisisl I failed due to permanent stat drain effects. I'm avoiding con drainers and looking desperately for a robe of permanence (preferably with nether resistance). Azathoth, well, at that point I was resigned to just skipping the quest monsters. I could have done him, I think, but I didn't bother to try ;P The monsters really had me rattled at that point. Every time I try to fight anything, more than 100 monster come storming over to mob me. Its really annoying!

So, my strategy has paid off so far. Not one, but 2 potions of con! Nidhogg perma drained me to negate the effects of one of the potions, but I also scored an augmentation, so there! And now, the second ring of power! Wow! I'm up to 3 immunities (*AcCoFi) and what is even more imporant, sustain Int and Wis. Well not really, but the only stat drain that is unavoidable for me is the Eldritch Horror, and its nice to finally cover that up.

I'm in burgle mode looking for tons of *healing* and those easy to spot ninja weapons, if they ever get generated. Oh, I'll also stop to retrieve the occasional ring of power :)

On 24.9.2009 02:56 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Ooops! Surprise! Sustain stats doesn't work in nightmare mode. Or perhaps the sustain only works sometimes? Also, I swapped in Azaghal and Brand for that defender and the volcanic geyser. The result is +10 speed, but lack of nether resistance. I'll carry the harness as a swap ....

I think the sustains still work most of the time? And then, some of the time, if a drain works, it does a permanent drain ^^ It's really more annoying in the early game than in the late game, because the drain above 18/01 seems to be a lot less.. maybe 5 percentage points.

Mandatory post on CL50! You might be surprised to learn that Dwarves boosts my damage output more than the Harness of the Hell. +3 Str adds (+2,+5) to each weapon but the harness only adds (+4,+4). Of course, nether resistance is sometimes required ... One of the secrets to gaining ninja power is to max out your strength. The other is to berserk, which adds (+12, +13) to each weapon, which is the equivalent of the harness of hell being (+48, +52)!

Only Jaws and Qzzlzuup remain. I think it is time to scum for a swimsuit. Using artifact creation on a falcon sword might also be worth a shot if I really can't find a nice bikini to wear ...

Dave, you are definitely right about the sustains. Its just the first time I got hit with the Eldritch Horror, my stats got drained. But the drain is much less frequent then before ... So I'm still interested in a robe of permanence or a decent crown of might.

Unless amulets and Rings get quartered? or is that because of dual wield? I though Amulet applies fully to both weapons?

Regarding amulets and such:
When dual wielding, and bonuses from amulets, body armor, gloves, boots, cloaks will be split between each weapon. So, the harness is (+15,+15), and it should effect your leading weapon with (+8,+8) and your off hand weapon with (+7,+7). The only exception is penalties. So a cloak of the bat (-11, -13) will give (-11, -13) to each weapon! For the ninja, bonuses are divided by 2. So the harness should give (+4, +4) to the lead weapon and (+3.5, +3.5) to the off hand weapon. This is hardly very significant. Also, I'm not sure how heng handles rounding and proration.

For rings and such, they give the full effect but only apply to the weapon on the hand in question. So wearing a ring of +3 attacks on the same hand as your shield is a bad idea :)

Regarding Mutations:
I must just have bad luck, but every time I try, I get lots bad mutations (-3 speed, negative all stats, vulnerability to elements, etc) long before I get anything I want. I've tried maybe a dozen times and never had a good experience. Plus, the regen biff is huge for a ninja, though not so much for a ninja with the innate berserk ability.

The nightmare continues ...
I nearly died to a simple storm wyrm. OK, not nearly, but with the buff hp, they breathe for almost 600hp, which I was not expecting. My only source of double lightning resistance is a potion of resistance, and those are too precious to waste on a simple storm wyrm. Anyway, one breath sent me down to like 280hp, which feels like a near death experience.

Azathoth was extremely tough. I took 700hp in the first three rounds, and realized the problem was his auras, only one of which I am immune to. Without double resistance, a ninja will take 200hp/round just from auras alone! Ouch!

Cantoras also nearly got me. My strategy was to move in for one round of attack, take my 200-500hp damage, back off and berserk myself back to full. I only think I was able to attack for 2 rounds once, when he failed to cast a spell. I didn't dare use Bunshin as that seems to always inspire the psycho spear in nightmare mode. Well, this strategy was working, but taking a while. What nearly killed me was me stepping next to him and then my passwall wearing off. I'm berserk so I take a turn to quaff CCW. He spots me, double moves me down to 200hp. Ouch. 700hp in a single turn with superstealth. I blinked and licked my wounds before finishing him off. He's a tough bugger.

Now, where is Qzzzlzuup? He's going to be a tough corpse to recover unless I can get a decent setup. No rush, I guess, as I still can't spot a swimsuit.

About 40 more uniques down. My motto has become: "Whatever the cost". I don't care if its 10 !*Healing*, every unique I see must die! This comes after Nodens snuck in while I was resting off the effects of a mana storm from Shuma-Gorath (attempting to burgle a !Wis, of all things), and he tagged me with another unwelcome mana storm (double move ... once into view, and again to mana storm). That left me at less than 100hp wondering how to procede. I risked the -TeleportOther and it worked, saving my butt. After that, I now always carry *healing* and will quaff some at the drop of a hat. Nodens as been running in fear since, as I have yet to meet him again.

I doubt the swimsuit will happen. Its nearly as rare as PDSM, and 4 times as rare as ?ArtifactCreation (I've found 1) and diamond edges (I've found 8!). Plus, I'm not so sure it is a good idea. I have my stats high enough, and the BDSM gives 65AC while a swimsuit is unlikely to give more than 15AC. No, I think my kit is set ...

I conquered the mountain in an attempt to improve my life rating, which was stuck in the low 90%'s. I finally got 105%, and that's good enough for me.

Still looking for Qzzzzzzzzlzuuuuuuup. I met him once, but he surrounded us with chaos breathers, so didn't risk killing him. I'll go for a falcon sword on my next artifact ...

What I went thru to recover that last corpse is indescribable. There is sat, on the ground, for nearly 15 minutes real time before I could get to it. Surrounded by Nazgul, greater dragons, and a stupid chaos vortex (!), I had to retreat and proceeded to get swarmed by unmakers. 10 *destructions* later and I thought I handled the swarm, killing nearly 1000 of the suckers, but no, a few survived to launch a second wave of assault. *Destruction* after *Destruction* and finally, I'm out! (5 staves = 20 charges) Still they come. In a mad dash of desperation I made it to the corspe, but barely! Teleport and recall! Phewwwww!

Thank goodness, because I finally managed a good artifact! If you compare how much better this falcon sword is than Quickthorn, you will get an idea. Total Ninja Power!!!! :) :)

Now, I need to get my skill up. Only +36 to hit is embarassing ;)

Oh, on a side note, Oberon is down. 21978hp makes him twice the pain in the butt he usually is!

Why aren't you carrying ?oTeleportLevel? Those are guaranteed escapes. I have my Automizer set to collect them.

Stupidity? Well, anyway, an amulet of magic device mastery +5 should solve that problem. Plus now I can use rods of healing reliably even when berserk, whereas before I would fail about 60% when not berserk, and 100% when berserk.

Oh, and Nodens is dead and only 24 uniques remain. I'm not about to change my ways now ;)

OK, I just need to mop up now. Unless I totally screw up, this should be very doable. I'll agree with Dave: The end game is harder than normal, but not too bad. It nothing like the early game which is darn near impossible!

I'm severely tempted to play without nether resistance. The trade off is reliable rods of healing. Oh, I guess for the serpent I should go back to the harness as I'll have something like 40 *healing* to play with, and reliable rods will mean a lot less. But in the mean time, its nice to be able to zap to get back 500hp. When you are used to berserking your hp back 22 at a time, this is pure pleasure!

Who's left to kill? Just dungeon masters. The highest non DM is Eibra the Water Dragon. Where did everybody go? I'm just starting to warm up!

Oh, and with just one hand this guy is doing as well as most ninjas do with 2 hands! What an awesome weapon!!

Yeah, 894 combined damage is probably the best on the ladder, better than even all the stick wielding ninjas! (Lazy Daisy is only putting out 872 ... Pshaw!!) But, of course, the Stick has some benefits that do not show up in the character dump, like slay evil for instance ...

I still want +3 attacks from a ring, and another go at falcon sword #2! Come on, let's end the nightmare in style. Could I break 1000 damage??

The Harness would put me at 958 ... so its doable!

Are you going to try beating the GWoP in the Arena? Everything other than that was doable for me. Also, Ninjas with Quick-Walk, and attacking from 5 squares away, could potentially win against the Babble!

A 10,000hp shambler will just kill me, no? I really need *El ... or luck!

Beat the shambler, but not the Fenguan. It was close (2 stars) and probably, I should have used a needle. The shambler was luck, as my first attack took 6 stars off it ;)

Well, enough of this! What an annoying game ... especially for a ninja. Having everything awake all the time, doubly fortified and hasted up for action is not what ninjas are all about. Still, I think the ninja is a good choice for nightmare mode. Maybe its me, but I'm pretty good at keeping these guys alive. Hide. Retreat. Gather resources. Fight when circumstances are favorable. Patience. In the end, I decided to go the more conservative end game route with *Co rather than extra attacks. Even so, the Serpent was a complete pushover. Probably, this was my easiest ninja victory ever ... I mean the final battle was the easiest ever. Getting there was another matter. And that's probably the point. The fact the game was so hard forced me to build this guy up to powers I normally wouldn't come close to. For a long time, I was running away from all the uniques (permanent stat drain totally sucks) rather than just killing them.

This has to be the last nightmare mode for me. I need my stealth back!! But if I were to try it again, I might go with a Spectre (passwall, telapathy, FA, SI, hardly effected by eldritch horror) Samurai (detect ferocity early, good offensive power). Maybe if I see Dave fire up another one I'll me motivated, but for now, I need a break :)
