The trouble wasn't the gravity hound in this case--you got another move after you saw the first one. The trouble is you didn't get away when you had the chance...

1. Carry escapes, always.
2. Use them...

(In this case, a Scroll of Teleportation or Teleport level would have been appropriate.)

Also, carry Thranduil as a swap. ESP makes a huge difference, especially for a warrior.
