So much power, so early. How can this be? Actually, 122 damage is a result of 4 improve forces, so really, I'm not very powerful. Standard mage like approach with the Forcetrainer's "magic missle" to level up. For the orc quest though, I could not risk the mage approach with my terrible stealth, so I just went berserk. Whenever hitpoints were low and snagas nearby, I would just 'zerk back up my hp. Pretty easy stuff, and fortunately, the reward was a +4 stealth cloak.

Now, I face the evil Wormtongue, but first I found a rand-art from a chest. I would be extremely happy if all the powers it had was see invisible :)

Insanity! 375hp damage/round?! How can anything hope to survive?

Well, all kidding aside, Nature certainly makes finding quartz veins and granite walls easier. First, Wormy dropped crappy armor of resist cold and an unfriendly defender. I decided to use the defender for FA,SI,Base Resistance and just kill a few quartz veins with stone to mud for enough gold to scum the towns for a proper early game kit. But, by the time I found one, all my copies of Nature Mastery had been destroyed, and I could hardly melee properly with the -40 to hit penalty. So, I fought a bunch without free action and without lightning resistance! Better to be bold!

Scummed some gear, then some granite walls for easy xp. Now I'm tempted to call it quits on my scumming and play normal mid game pre-cloning pits for a change ... We'll see how boring it gets.

I lasted about 20 minutes ... I too had a tough time with Grendel, only having a 63AC at the time. He could roll thru my hp in about 3 rounds, the sucker. So I scummed ... and I thought I was powerful enough for the top of the Dragon's Lair, what with the shiny +2 attack ring. But man, I'm getting it handed to me. With only 480hp and an AC in the 70's I was quick meat for dragons, even storm wyrms. I quickly discarded my armor, and now sport AC 111, which is better, but I really need Stone Skin to pull this off. Right now, every dragon costs 1 !healing, and that is me being stingy. Sitting at the top of the lair without ESP with 120hp is dumb ... But I just can't bring myself to quaff more than 1 !healing per battle.

So, Theoden is useful for me! I couldn't even attempt this without it ...

Oooh, I can probably wear that Fur Cloak of Aman now that I took my armor off ... at the time, it was disrupting my balance. An extra 12 AC would bring me to 123, which is getting close to enough, I think (173 with stone skin once somebody drops my book will stop the need for constant healing ...).

When does that 4th attack show up?

Its really odd ... I got my AC up to 132 with Corwin and some enchantments to my boots, and that cut down the damage I receive from a Storm Wyrm by at least a factor of 2 ... No healing required :)

Ha! I'd hardly call the world of Hengband civilized. Thieving Amberites, evil dragons, and hordes of foul orcs infest what was once a peaceful planet ... But I digress.

OK, it took 39 spellbooks to finally land a copy of Nature's Gifts, and that is not counting all the books I saw while town scumming. Grrrr... But at last it showed, so I quickly went for the Cloning Pits, which I was about to do anyway, book or no book. It was a smooth quest, and I didn't need the Forest Creation like I though I might. Another 2 copies of my book, a couple crowns of might and Thalkettoth were provided. And I won't be selling that Rohirrim. At 20lbs, it can be worn if I really need it ... just probably not yet.

4 puffs on the force yields 529 damage per round ... but usually I stop after 3. The 4th doesn't fail often, but it seems to get me at the wrong time. With my poor stealth, I'm lucky that normally sleepy dragons haven't woken up after my second or third pump anyway.

Time to move down in the Dragon's Lair, but last attempt found me face to face with a bubble vault. I made disappointing progress, as Gothmog was inside and picked a fight with some angel netting some nasty summons like a Cyberdemon and a Great Unclean One. Also, Nappa quaked to unleash Tiamat, who promptly breathed me down to deaths door. At that, I teleported and decided to abort. There were no candidates for the stuff I need anyway ... Just useless weapons and well, an unidentified ring, but I could not get to it.

Interesting, I prefer this weapon to my fists. At least for now. Damage is significantly higher versus dragons and the vampirism obviates any need for healing. Good thing too, as Herbal Healing if completely unusable at the moment. Its got a nice activation too!

So, I'm looking for down stairs, but now a Dragon mob ambushed me. Most are dead, but a bile wyrm and a GWoChaos remain.

Ha! My first Ring of Speed all game is Tulkas, which is actually preferable at the moment. Eventually I'll need a real one ... but it better be a real good one.

Gerard gave me a blood curse I won't soon forget ... Cyberdemon? Of course. Eibra the Water Dragon? Yup. Ethereal Dragon? Weak, but yes. Plus 20+ inconsequentials. I took 500hp of insta-damage from the summons which fortunately did not include a rocket from the cyberdemon. Yuk! Good thing I had my magic resistance up ...

I'm really liking this Bo Staff. Rhan-Tegoth was easily handled ... until he "rhan" away. More than once too ... I hate that, I'm not about to come out of my trees to chase him while he showers me with summons (Trust, me I tried once). Finally, I was able to kill him before he could run away again ... and he gave me my pretty Tulkas ring.

Only 47 dead uniques is pathetic ... I'll hang out down here where dragons are plentiful and my staff is overpowering.

Well, that is much better. 1235 damage per round sort of puts my Bo staff to shame ... But melee has become more powerful, despite this unrealistic post.

3 boosts: 100% safe => 808 damage
4 boosts: ?% safe => 913 damage. 4 boosts seems 90% safe in town, but only about 50% safe in the dungeon. I usually stop after just 3 ...

I should have waited longer on the arena. As it was, it was close. GWoP on 1 star close. It all came down to a single failure on my 7% fail herbal healing. Had I waited until it was 3% ... Who knows? Oh well ...

I just hit CL50. Its pretty quick going for a barbarian. With all resistances, I really only desire better base speed (just a tad better will do) and better stats.

So, who is waiting at DL88? I guess I'll grab my _Magi and find out!

With 18/200 WIS, your Herbal Healing fail should be getting fairly low (maybe 15%)? Remember Forcetrainers get Clear Mind, which acts as a Mini-Eat Magic. I remember grinding a lot of uniques to death with Teleport-ClearMind-HerbalHeal-Teleport back.

On 24.1.2010 02:30 chris wrote:
Yeah, Clear Mind rocks ... DL88 was Nyarlothotep who at least gave Jack's cloak, which I use for stealth if not telepathy. I wonder, is Clear Mind powerful enough for the Destroyer? In other words, if I use my (3% fail :) Herbal Healing all 5 or 6 times until I am out of Mana, teleport him away, can I regain all my sp by the time he comes back? I think so ...

In the mean time, I am getting killed by moronification and lack of sustains. So, my 3% fail herbal healing quickly becomes 20% fail ... Sucks! Maybe I can find Shiva's armor or something? Or maybe I should not have been squelching robes all game ...

I guess I have what I need for the win ... There are only two things that have me concerned at the moment:

[1] Low base speed. +20 is scary after a dispel magic. I know the Serpent does this almost every turn, so probably, I need more speed. Should I surrender my +2 attacks ring? I can't give up Tulkas.

[2] Lack of sustain stats. Ideally, I'd like to sustain before battling the Serpent. My 3% fail Herbal Healing would be awesome, if I could keep that fail rate from rising! Not sure about that one ... and only 16 mushrooms so far.

Probably, I just need to slow down and build a bit more ...

Don't worry about it! If he kills you, you will become more powerful than he could possibly imagine.
