This is my new FA 1.1 warrior experiment to check out FA. I used to play FA a ton a couple years ago, but fell out of it when Tak upgraded Vanilla and then never went back because wilderness kind of annoys me. But now with the Dungeon mode of FA, here goes!

I really like the mixed groups of novice adventurers! Very good flavor and much more realistic. Also, it's nice playing with Player Ghosts again. The first one dropped Gwindor for me!

Got a few more levels here. There are a lot of player ghosts; fortunately they usually drop something really nice so I don't mind. The ghosts around dlvl 20 are really easy to kill and drop really good items, so they are way too tempting to farm. I have gotten some "of Chaos" weapons and I've been amused by some of the crazy procs when fighting monsters.

I have also noticed there is a LOT of groups of monsters (more than I'm used to), so I have to stay a bit higher dlvl than otherwise so I don't get swarmed.

Another observation: it seems that any reproducing monsters become active well before I see them and I regularly open doors to see a room full of worms or rats, etc. This is pretty annoying, but I'm dealing with it. Fortunately they are harmless at this level, but it might get worse....

There are also a LOT of invisible things, and I still don't have See Invis, so I am being cautious until I find something with See Invis. My stats have all been reduced by various invisible things.

With that low stealth, I'm not surprised breeders are waking up and breeding before you get to them.

I'm interested in your comments on numbers of different types of monsters. One of the effects of having dungeon only is that there is no daylight, so light-hating monsters become more common.

I ended up with a Holy Avenger weapon, so now I can see invis. There seems to be a good number of "nature pits" or whatever they're called (zoos?), some of which have clear hounds or clear mushroom patches.

I just finished my first themed level! Orc drums, DOOM DOOM! It was relatively easy for my level and gear; nothing besides physical damage (mostly). There were a few times I had to use my staff of Teleport to get out when the Nrulings blinded me, but otherwise harmless. After taking the long time to clear the level, I had another clvl, several ego weapons to sell, and Gorlim. >_< I was all excited the whole level because I had a {Special} helm, but when I got back to town I threw it down in disgust.

In general on normal dungeon levels, the hardest part seems to be druids or beastmasters summoning massive amounts of natural creatures. These guys are hidden in the large groups of aforementioned "novice" humanoids, but they are hard to get to when in a pack and usually get a summon off first. Grrr!

I love the itemization on the jewelry. It's exciting to get a new piece and discover what "rune" it will be, and balancing resists with vulnerabilities and other effects.

I went down to dlvl 30 and got the message that "this is the home of Mim, Betrayer of Turin" and at first I was scared that I wasn't ready for him. But then I saw him, activated by boots for speed and melee'd him down in about 6 easy rounds.

I have found that I am stairscumming much less than I do in V. It seems like going between stairs puts me near rooms much less often than in V, or maybe the dungeon generation code has more tunnels than in V. In either case, I find myself clearing entire levels rather than dwelling near the stairs. Conceptually this sounds much more dangerous, so I'm not really diving. My turn count is going to go way up since I'll be overpowered for any given level.

I'm waiting to find some sort of super powerful weapon or item that will take me to the next level of dangerousness.... I have enjoyed the artifacts that the RNG has tossed my way. So far nothing really overpowering, but interesting.

I got the themed level with all the dragons and elementals and for SOME reason thought it would be a great idea to give it a shot. I cleared about half the level before all my staffs, potions, and scrolls were completely used up or burned out and used my last ?TeleportLevel to get the hell outa there, beaten and ashamed. I could take out most of the monsters, but with SO many ranged attacks in those wide open areas, I couldn't keep up. But I knew I wasn't going to see that level again so I tried to make the best of it. :)

Still looking for anything with Telepathy to start diving more, and something with Speed would be nice too. Artifacts are hard to come by apparently...

I have noticed that the vendors in town never have enough arrows, so I'm super glad I didn't make a Ranger, though it would be nice to have a guaranteed stock of basic ammo.

Starting to get some decent stat potions, and buying some as well from the Black Market. Slowly but surely. I wonder what the next mini quest is....

As an experiment, I swapped out some crucial resists in exchange for much more stealth (got up to 12 at one point). While this did keep things from seeing me from a ways away, I found it not worth it because a LOT of things blind or confuse at this level (those nrulings are everywhere!).

I have found that farming player ghosts yields a great deal of artifacts, so I have been doing that desperately trying to find some ESP or speed gear. I did find Thelkettoth (sp?) so I have +3 speed and some more resists. I also found a x4 artifact Light Crossbow which activates for Brand Missiles. The ironic part is that I NEVER HAVE BOLTS. They are rare finds in the dungeon and virtually non-existent in town. Very frustrating.

To cover some other resists, I have let go of some sustains, which continues to be a problem. I get STR drained very regularly and continue to have to recall (which I have on a random ring Activation) to search for restore potions.

I still feel very fragile, so I'm afraid to go deeper. I think I'll farm player ghosts some more until I feel better. It's like therapy. :)

I entered the dragon themed level, and thought I should give it a shot. In the end, I cleared the whole level, went up 3 character levels, got a LOT of stat potions from all the dragon drops, and also got an artifact helm with telepathy! I have noticed the telepathy range is rather short, so it's not a game-breaker but gives me an edge. Now I get 5 swings with my holy avenger weapon; still looking for some big beefy weapon. So far with my 2 scrolls of Acquirement, both have yielded artifacts, which is nice.

On 17.3.2010 01:56 Zikke wrote:
Took out Glaraung! In hindsight, I gambled heavily without realizing it. I forgot that the dragons breath works slightly differently than in V, and he has "dragonfire" and I had no poison resist....

Fortunately about 7 rounds of melee and 3 potions of healing did him in. I had 599 hp going into the fight which I assumed would be enough.

I took the Athletics specialty, just to boost my CON and DEX some more. I'm not sure what the blows/round cap is, but I want to hit it! A random troll dropped a chest that had 3 artifact melee weapons (did he just finish stealing it from somebody else?), and one of them was The Battle Axe of the Marches, with which I hit for around 400 damage per round against evil things (and let's face it, there's a lot of evil in these dungeons...).

Just need some speed and I'll feel better!

All in all, this has been a lot of fun so far. I missed the FA flavor of things. And now I'm IDing all jewelry juuuuust in case something has speed or telepathy on it (so I can swap out this helmet for The Steel Helm of Ecthelion which has +3 CON, STR, and DEX.

And my current gripe is that since there are a TON of undead things all over the place, I get my experience drained very often, and there are !RestoreLifeLevels in town about once every 6 trips back, so most of the time I'm not actually gaining experience.

I have also noticed that player ghosts are virtually non-existent now. It happened all of a sudden once I killed Mim. Is that intended or am I just getting really unlucky going between levels? I have been clearing floors again.

I also killed Itangast, Eol, and Thuringwethil on the trip down in my panic. Even through all this success I am disheartened, for now I am in the realm of the time hound.....

If there is a message there, you may want to force a "y" or "n" answer so people don't ESC or space or *more* through it accidentally?

So does that mean I will never be able to fight Ungoliant now and get another Specialty?

On 17.3.2010 08:48 Nick wrote:

I am jumping around floors around dlvl 71 because everything around here is SUPER scary and "1-shot'ish". I found an uber set weapon and a matching piece of body armor, and weilded them both, but got no set bonus. Is there a spoiler for the sets and how to get the set bonus and what it is?

Everything at this level drains charges, so my large collection of -TO is now worthless...

Despite my loathing of that place, I did have a distinct advantage with the hounds and some of the spiders that were living there or summoned: the group AI caused them to never step right next to me and I could see them with telepathy, and nothing ever had LoS to me through the trees, so basically I could choose when to fight, 1-shot anything (because it was always in melee range). When I was low (from getting chaos breath to the face) I would just stand there and they would form a neat perimeter and I would just rest to full and do it again.

On 18.3.2010 22:25 Zikke wrote:
I agree that the AI should not stop at a certain perimeter, but you might consider reducing the "awakening" range of monsters while in the forest. Any character with low stealth will be killed very quickly with the zerg of hounds and spiders that happens instantly when you enter each level. And without up stairs, it would be overly difficult.

I got the Demon themed level and cleared about 1/2 of it before all the fire damage burned through my books and scrolls and I had to bail. It wasn't very fruitful, so I'm not crying about it.

I'm around dlvl 75 and there are a LOT of hounds. Is this just specific to the dungeon I'm in now? I remember there was one dungeon with a lot of hounds; I sure hope this is it. My stealth isn't great so as soon as I step into a level I am flooded with hounds.

So right now I am trying to scum around on 85 looking for healing potions, but the progress is slow since I'm dodging Sauron and all the hounds. So basically life sucks between dlvl 55 and 85. >_<

I noticed a small graphical bug where when I enter dlvl 85 and it is supposed to say "This is the home of Sauron, the Sorceror." it actually just has a bunch of blank space, and then -More- at the end. If I hit Ctrl-P it will correctly recount the phrase.
