If you know you have an immediate escape on a new level, it makes a difference. The only way to understand the difference is to try it and see. Sometimes the trial of making it to a way off the level, up or down, is the most interesting thing that happens in an entire game.

The fastest way to get better is to incrementally remove a lot of small crutches you currently lean on. Connected stairs isn't much more important than the others. It's just the obvious first step.

What's your next crutch removal? (Since I don't use stairs as an escape). Actually I use stairs to feeling-scum sometimes at Dlevels 0-30. After then all level feelings are really high. BTW I am still using a nightly from I think 5/7 before they reduced some artifact bonuses and removed DMS of speed an permanence--just going to a newer nightly will make the game harder for me I think since I pretty much always wear DSM of speed or permanence at some point in all my winners.

I see we are philosophically opposed on this: I regard hack-and-back as a tactic and not an abuse. I don;t know what an ASC is.

I used to auto-ignore on rings of escaping till my last game, then I saw their advantage when running around the dungeon to save game turns before I get real speed. I hardly ever play rangers. I just started using rings of teleportation also to cut down early game turns.
