Fintar, abiding by the ancient elven laws, will be playing as if dis-connected stairs, though not 100%, as he has already had to flee from Maggot's dogs twice. It won't happen again as he has slain them all. Also playing preserve off.

He's off to a slow start. Surviving Maggot's dogs consumed a lot supplies and necessitated a few early returns to town. Since he had leveled a bit and was still very shallow, he decided to take on a quest (for dark level warriors). He held a couple of potions of speed, a sling and *many* shots and the ability to set slowing traps. Even given those advantages, it was still a hard fought victory. He chose a potion of CON as his reward.

Since still shallow, he took on another (pending) quest (for fire spirits). Nothing of Rfire in town, no WoR either, so Fintar will be walking.

The quest for Fire Spirits was a breeze, but the reward was some paltry GP. Anticipating another easy quest, Fintar signed up and was directed to kill some swordsmen. No problem, or so he thought.

The quest level was also {special}. Fintar was excited. The swordsmen fell easily enough, but about half way through Fintar stumbled upon a creeping coin pit. He quickly learned that mithril coins are hard to beat off with a shovel. He killed many with his shots. The coins provided their own reward, and although Fintar fought bravely he finally had to flee the level, barely escaping with his life.

The quest was failed and no artifact was found, but his adventures did net him quite a bit of coin.

With monster quests (not themed levels, special, or pit/nest quests), you can do a quick down-up on a staircase and get a new level with the remaining monsters you need to kill. It only checks for quest monster failure one game turns equally divisible by 1200 (going by memory on the exact number. It might be 1400, but you get the idea).

Sounds a little cheesy, but good to know. I had wondered why the 'failed quest' message was sometimes delayed.

Still feeling safe at his current depth, Fintar took on another quest, this time for Rangers, evil Rangers he hoped. With his trusty sling and ample supply of phase door, he recalled and quickly found his way to the quest level. He wasn't even nervous, he knew these levels well.

Detect monsters revealed the nearest ranger and Fintar approached quietly. He entered the darkened room that held his sleeping enemy, the silly ranger, and positioned himself about 40' distant. All was quiet.

The first shot hit hard and fast and the ranger awoke desperately, having lost more that 1/2 his HP's, but then something mildly unexpected happened. The 'silly' ranger summoned animals.

This wasn't entirely unexpected. Fintar knew, somewhere in the back of his mind, that rangers could summon. The animals surround the ranger, making him inaccessible. The were some cold hounds and some birds, crows maybe? Silly Fintar.

This wasn't a problem. Fintar was prepared. His sabre of slay animal would make quick work of the beasts and then he could get back to the task at hand. But first he needed to level the playing field with his staff of sleep monsters. Everything fell asleep, including about a dozen things that Fintar was previously unaware of. Hmmm.

Success, or so he thought. But the crebain, (crebain!!!, uh oh), awoke immediately, shrieking to wake up (and haste) all the rest. This is bad, thought Fintar, who now rummaged through his pack and found NO items of teleportation, very bad, but not hopeless. He still had a staff full of sleep monsters, many phase door, a weapon of slay animal, and ample healing. Silly, silly Fintar.

He attackers had not yet reached him, so he slept them all again. But the crebain were restless and would not nap. They awoke immediately and shrieked again. Fintar repeated this excercize a third time with similar results. Now the cold hounds were upon him, breathing and 'moving even faster'.

So the game of phase door began. It's was a game that Fintar knew well, but would not win. The first phase moved him away from the exit and adjacent to the pack of cave orcs that he was previously unaware of. Fintar was taking damage now, and not an insignificant amount.

The second phase put him back near his original location, and the third, instead of landing him safely in the corridor outside the room where he could have chugged a few potions and dismantled his attackers one by one, put him directly in the belly of the beast. He was surrounded by hounds and crebain and the now smiling ranger himself, who casually summoned even more helpers, not that they were necessary.

Fintar died with the satisfaction of knowing that the ranger would find nothing of great value while searching through his belongings.

This misadventure leaves me with two game play questions.

Does sleeping a monster cancel it's hasted status, so it will awake at normal speed? Should it (yes IMO)?

Is sleep monster an accurate name for the items that bear it's name? Does it actually sleep the monster (where noise is required to wake them), or does it just paralyze them for x turns or until disturbed? My rogue was mildly stealthy, I expected my enemies to sleep slightly longer than 0 turns.

Anyhoo, a fun little run, and an interesting and unexpected death.

There is a bug in 0.5.2, fixed in the latest commit. Sleep monsters only worked for one turn. It should work normally now. But with the Crebain, I don't think it would have made any difference (horrible luck, though, to summon Crebain).

Good point about sleeping should erase slowing and hasting. I will make that change. Should it erase monster confusion and fear as well?
