In terms of the build, it is Elbereth that makes everything possible. Ephel tried to go toe to toe with Morgoth, but that wasn't going so well. As soon as he started singing though, Morgoth would flee and then speed and opportunist meant he got hit nearly every turn whilst never retaliating. Elbereth means most creatures just flee and the only ones you have to worry about are horrors and serpents. It just seems a bit too powerful to me. Saying this though, I don't how much of a difference Majesty makes on top of this - maybe it is the combination of the two?

In terms of smithing, I'd make artifice also dependent on artistry so you have to invest a bit more and maybe up the skill point cost.

Other thoughts
- cap the stats. I concentrated on getting grace as high as possible to increase smithing and song
- Unwavering voice means you can pretty much sing forever - maybe 50% instead of 100%?

Overall though, I'd like to say that Sil is a "masterpiece". It is so well thought out and apart from certain individuals *ahem*, it has proved to be very well balanced. I love how you've stripped back so much from Angband and yet brought a real depth to character advancement over a much shorter game.

@debo - I must admit I copied jujuben's start with Pellian and made two =accuracy(+2) and a "Blessed Realm(+0). Ephel found an enchanted forge as the first one so made a "Grace(+1) instead.

Regarding speed, obviously going fast is very strong compared to going at normal speed. But because of the player cap at speed 3, you lose the benefits of Sprinting and of Potions of Quickness, normally one of the best abilities and one of the best type of potion. In particular you can often have a hoard of potions of quickness which will see you through the critical moments of the game. Thanks for the comment on Elbereth. We'd had suspicions -- but the monster fear system was one of the later elements to make it into the game, so it's had less testing than most parts.

Interesting point on capping the stats. I think that getting them to silly levels is ultimately hard enough to achieve and gives enough of a cool feeling to the player that it's worth keeping, particularly as any cap would be arbitrary, but I see that it would help rein this kind of character in a little. Do you think that making the price rise for a second and third point of the same stat on an artefact even steeper would help a little?

It does seem that part of the issue was the number of forges at the end. Nine/ten artefacts seems a little excessive to me. Interesting that you got down to 900ft pretty quickly and then spend 7.5k turns at the last two depths, forging five artefacts in this time! Maybe making an artefact should take 300 turns to match the 3 forge uses (would also make it effectively impossible to make an artefact with aid from !oG)? This would have slowed you down a little. We don't want to overcompensate on reducing the number of forges too far, because this has the potential to make smithing a lot more frustrating. And it may be that if Elbereth were less effective you'd be slowed down quite a bit in clearing the levels to find forges.

Unwavering voice is obviously helping you here, but I think the main thing helping you sing forever is your ridiculous Grace score! At 12 grace without Unwavering Voice you can already sing for over twice as long as a character with a reasonable 4 grace and the ability. Not sure what to do about this.

I played the game as quick as I could in the early game to give me more time at the end to find forges when I had more experience to spend. Does forging currently have a fixed time then - I hadn't appreciated that. Personally I would make it a multiple of the smithing score it takes to make - perhaps 4 or 5 turns per point of smithing?

I don't think increasing the value for second and third points would make any difference. It was rare enough already to put two points in one stat because of the current price. I think there should be a rise for increasing two stats though, as currently it is more efficient to have single point rises in two stats across two artefacts rather than double point rises in one stat on each (I think anyway - I haven't actually priced it up!).

I never actually thought to use !Grace whilst smithing - so that in itself wouldn't have affected me. When finding a forge I just cleared the forge room itself and then started smithing. Whenever anything came in I just switched to Elbereth for a turn or two and then back to Aule. I'd be constantly interrupted, but would get there in the end! Elbereth usually worked on the first turn, so if that wasn't so effective it would make it harder.

The turn count is by player turns, so speed doesn't help you in that regard; it just makes the monsters slower relative to you.

Forging is 100 turns per item at the moment. Varying it with the difficulty of the item would be an interesting brake on the ability to repeatedly create super-high-difficulty items.

It is indeed more efficient to make two items giving +1 to each of two stats than +2 to one each, but I see that even so you ended up with five different items increasing a single stat by 2 or more (including two non-artefact pieces of jewellery upping something by 3). I also think it _should_ be more efficient, as otherwise you could stack it so as to get +4 to a single stat for the same price as getting +2 to each of two. The way the Sil system generally works I think many characters have a preferred stat and would just stack that one (to some extent you did this with grace even with this system, but there are some slots where you can't put a grace bonus).

By the way, that unique deathblade was the toughest opponent I faced. I actually had to heal up during that fight just in case... I imagine a more normal character build could have real problems against it. Not sure how one would normally fight it, as I presume fleeing is pretty futile?

Deathblades don't attack you unless you get very close, so you can always avoid fighting it. But in this case it might just be it got a lucky hit against you. It's got a (+33, 1d9) attack which is _very_ hard to dodge but can normally be absorbed without too much difficulty by high protection and Critical Resistance, for instance. It also resists Cold, so your halberd would have been less effective than normal.
