My thoughts on Archers, I ran into a lot of monsters that were resistant to criticals and resisted poison so you need some other way to add damage. Flaming Arrows would work but I didn't want to risk running out of arrows. I could probably have used Rapid Shot as well but I didn't like the idea of sacrificing three dex, str. That's why I got Song of Sharpness and that seemed to work well enough. Vanish is super-powerful with an archer since you can stand next to a corner or pillar and disappear quickly if needed. I would say the raw damage is probably not as high as melee but it's easier to hit things so it's more consistent and it's much safer.

If you get Rapid Shot *and* Flaming Arrows, and use {special} arrows, you end up doing a lot of damage -- more than melee in my experience. That said, you also literally burn through your arrow supply.

It seems that Listen makes the big difference with vision, and now that I think about it, I usually get Listen with my archers too. It gives them more effective range, so more time to kill enemies before they close in, and it also helps to know if you are about to be surrounded or to encounter monsters you can't handle. An archer really needs both these things, and will also want Keen Senses, so Listen seems a bit of a must have. I don't see a problem with that though.
