My second character to get to 950' (first one died on 1000' because I didn't know what I was doing), and I'm not really sure what my strategy should be for 1000' this game either.

Currently sitting on a forge and need to decide what to make with Masterpiece... I can manage difficulty 51 using all my equipment, or 53 if I raise smithing once more. I've been quite happy with Aranruth but probably I should make something better now?

OMG!

If I were you w/ your skillset, I'd make a mattock of DOOM lol

Sharpness + boosted melee maybe, and an extra damage side if you can manage it. I dunno. Are you planning on taking (Strength)? If you do, that means you should aim for a weight around 7.5lbs -- super light, but I guess if you're planning on quaffing !Str before the throne room, you could with 12lb.

It's very impressive that you've made it so far while carrying a danger-drawing weapon since 450'!

Actually, come to think of it, it might be impossible to put sharpness on a mattock. I've never tried :|

No, you can't put sharpness on a mattock - been there, tried that ;)

If you are out to kill Morgoth then you need a big dice weapon, preferably sharp and branded. A battle axe or a war hammer is probably the best bet.

Morgoth was easy enough to kill with knockback (which is pretty ridiculous), but then I got swarmed by Draugluin + vampire lords on the way up and couldn't land enough hits on them with the Silmaril curse active.

You still won, though, so congratulations!

Are you elliptic from the Dungeon Crawl irc?

Hmmn... Morgoth dead, but Silmarils left unrecovered? I think we might call that a draw :D Sauron's still poking around out there, somewhere, if I remember my Tolkein lore correctly...

Extremely good run! Kinda sucks the vampires put an end to your party, esp. since you were permahasted. I honestly have no idea how I'd handle the escape myself without insane stealth + Vanish!

FYI, with that much XP banked, you coulda pushed your will up a bit. I'm pretty sure that stat drains are subject to a Will check. Did you break/lose Aranruth? Because holding that could have helped as well (+3 will IIRC). Even the Blessed Realm amulet could have helped a little bit :)

WaveMotion: Thanks! And yes, I am that elliptic.

debo: Tevildo was the original version of Sauron and I killed him, so I think it is okay. :P It's true that raising Will a bit would have helped with the stat drain, but with the curse and my lack of consumables I think things would likely have been bad regardless.

Re: Sauron, I believe he's also Gorthaur, who you also killed. Not sure what other names he went by, but there were at least a couple others, some of which show up in one variant or another.

Gorthaur is the Sil version of Sauron/Thu, but yes, we did choose to include the characters from both the cat and wolf versions of the story.

Bad luck with the vampires there. The same thing happened to my Dwarven smith Telchar. Will is probably the best solution, but they are really hard with both Silmaril effects (the second Silmaril doubles the number of monsters on the escape and the third one makes you take the worst of two rolls for each skill check). The best solution might be exchange places to avoid getting bogged down, or maybe Elbereth.
