I was hating on Belegost until this game, the dex penalty is so terrible, trying to play them by heavy investment in smithing or other stuff is futile (I actually died to a wolf pack from like 49HP once). So I tried a low investment approach, getting two +1 accuracy rings, and a -2 blessed realm amulet, worked nicely. An out of depth Ulfang dropped me a pretty awesome great axe. Feeling pretty dwarven (read: buff) at the moment.

That _is_ a nice great axe. Good going, anyhow -- keep it up!

By the way, I guess you're probably right to spend heavily early on Melee and Evasion, as the Dex penalty does indeed make things a bit awkward. It's possible Song of Slaying would be good for you, given your lack of stealth and desire for a good melee score.

Scatha: I did try a song of slaying approach, but the stealth penalty combined with the way it makes me play badly (trying to kill everything too quickly) means I'm not fond of it.

Anyway for this game, I actually had a smithing character do stuff later on for once, though I basically didn't forge anything besides a mastery hammer, ring of fire/cold resistance and my great axe. I had pretty good gear otherwise and didn't care much.

In a rare occurance I tried to kill Carcharoth, but he ran off at half health. I thought about chasing after him but a staff of foes showed the punk ran back into Angband. So instead I hung around and berserked a lot of trolls, it was quite fun.

One of these days I should build a character to kill Morgoth. I can't get over my instinct to be a complete coward especially so close to victory.

That is an instinct that has granted you those victories! The ladder is littered with those who have fallen at the last threshold now.
