Haven't played in more than a month, so I expected to die right away. This run has been weird from the very beginning, though...

Named in honor of the recent WCS Starcraft 2 champion :)

Not really sure where to go next from here. I'm having a hard time hitting things, even with Nargil, and darkness is giving me a lot of grief.

BTW, those treachery gloves are like shareware for the Opportunist ability. You're damned right I bought the full version! :)

I had to rely on ANY source of True Sight in the pre-1.0 days. Otherwise, I kept hitting away the salraukar in the dark with a Greatsword.

For the first time ever, I've stumbled across Scatha's lair. I don't really see how I could take him out -- his protection is fairly bad, but I don't like the looks of his damage dice and I don't think I have a guaranteed way of getting free action and resist fear...

Oh yeah, and I found Narsil along the way. No biggie. :)

Most fun thing about this character -- with this much resistance + protection, using dragons to toast/freeze/poison your enemies to death is a very viable strategy.

PS thanks for the correction Hugo :)

My next goal is to get Flanking, and then Whirlwind attack. I will then rename my character Cuisinart!

This one's for you, HM.

OK I'm starting to play like a complete idiot so it's time to call it a night. I've burned through a ton of consumables, and only luck kept me alive when I miskeyed into the middle of a group of 5 troll guards :/

Kill everything on the way down. When deep enough, use _Treasures and _Foes to track down unId'd objects and unfought uniques. If a new level has neither, then just grab anything useful on the way to a staircase and generate a new level.

Sounds like a plan. Now I just have to find either of those staves :) Hopefully uniques will actually start dropping things... I haven't had a single unique drop something non-vanilla yet :/ Scatha dropped nothing!

I just noticed that I have 3x fire resist. I sure hope I meet a lot of the major dragons from hereon in. Would love to let them use their fire breath against my foes :)

On 19.11.2012 18:40 Scatha wrote:
Dragons, like other territorial monsters, never drop anything. Internally, they have a drop but it is created on birth rather than death. This gives you the dragon hoards.

Ah -- I should have realized that. The help/recall text says "May drop up to 4 good objects" and I got all excited :)

With triple first resist, you'll be safe from fire drakes, but NOT Ururaukar. The fire resistances stack up against fire drakes, yes, but NOT Ururaukar. So, if you get hit by a Ururauko, it will deal damage AS IF you had only 1x fire resistance.

On 19.11.2012 23:55 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote:
In my experience, 3x fire resistance and roughly 6-15 protection reduced the Great fire-drake FIRE damage to only 11. Not bad.

Heh, don't worry, I'm well-aware of the ururauko thing :)

I'm gonna go take a look at how much fire damage Glaurung and the other big drags do from breath.

On 20.11.2012 01:56 debo wrote:
Well, that's it. In the end, it was lack of light that killed me. Was sort of working towards Inner Light, but I'm not even sure that would have helped.

There was something that kept trapping me -- I'm guessing Amethyst serpents of some variety, since they breathed darkness. They pushed me off the level a bunch of times, and things sort of spiralled out of control from there. Things came to a head when I hit 2 false floors in a row.

In hindsight, I should have trawled the 700'-800' depth a bit more before parking at 900'. (That's where I was headed when I took a dive down some crumbly floors.)

I'm still getting a feel for how melee characters need to play in the endgame, and it's been a month since I played anyhow, so I can't complain. Fun run!

On 20.11.2012 01:57 debo wrote:
Also, I was ironically killed by cold breath the moment I took off Hador's shield to deal with a Kemenrauko. (These are my new Wargs -- I hate them more than any other monster in the game. At least they are interesting, though :D)

For melee (non-stealth) in the end game, I'd suggest higher constitution. I managed to get 8 in one game (5 to start plus the point from the Will tree, Amulet of Constitution, Fingon's armor) and rarely had an "Oh no what do I do" moment after that. Of course, I did have plenty of consumables. I suppose the alternatives are high protection (Hardiness, etc.) and tricks (Song of Mastery, maybe Song of Staying or Song of Este).

It might be fun to take Listen so you have a few more turns to see what's coming, since you know something will be, but I haven't done it with a non-stealth character.

I'm surprised you didn't take Sprinting. When I get spotted by too many monsters at once, my main defense becomes running away to the closest staircase.

I think my biggest mistake, in retrospect, is replacing +eva equipment with +prot too early. I think this would have worked if I stayed at 700-800', but deeper than that, things get ugly.

Biggest lesson learned was how great opportunist is in the early game. It really helps to max your XP gain, instead of having most enemies flee with red health left.

On 20.11.2012 14:33 clouded wrote:
Condolences. I consider song of sharpness mandatory for these characters. It's possible to go without, but I think you are just making things much harder for yourself, for serpents, kemenrauko and the crown. One of the few things I don't like much is that I feel that I can't justify using songs like staying, este etc because it makes sharpness too expensive.

On 20.11.2012 14:40 debo wrote:
@clouded yeah I was trying to play without Song. I still think it's doable, but annoying :) A stupid voice in my brain told me I'd be able to squeak by with Nargil, but clearly that was a mistake :)

One thing that was super fun was dancing around Unmourned with ZoC + flanking + opportunist, holding a Bastard Sword of Final Rest. Poor things never had a chance :)

Thanks, we think they've turned out very well (relatively late addition to the game before release).

I should explain that the drop-on-birth I mentioned above is one component of the hoards. Dragons are also often found in dragon-lair vaults, with extra floor treasures for larger hoards.

Note for the future: 3x Fire Resistance is certainly nice. But, don't get too confident. I've once encountered a vault where I got a double whammy by TWO Great fire-drakes that found me in BOTH of their LOS.
