Oh, man - I just killed my first balrog. I'm convinced I'm going to die at any moment, and I'm not sure what to do with my stealthstab build next.

Does stomping Gilim in single combat mean I'm ready to go deeper? Because shadow bats are still scaring the bejeez out of me.

With an Evasion of 23, you have enough it takes to kill Nan too. Be careful with Nan, though. That Dude has good accuracy for a Giant and hits hard too.

Sorry for the double post. Don't know why oook.cz does this sometimes.

Switching to the sceptre for the extra light radius might help against the shadow bats?

Since you already have 10 points on Stealth, get Disguise and Vanish right away. Then you would want to save any armor that provides a Stealth bonus. It wouldn't hurt to get 11 Stealth and go for the extra DEX point.

Seriously, I've never seen 800 feet before. So far I've taken your advice on Disguise/Vanish but haven't gotten in a horrible situation where I've had to use it. I can trash cat warriors in groups and serpents of all colors... I'm just kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I know it's going to get ugly and I don't have a lot of XP left to spend, I'm sure.

By the way - what is the point of a Bow of Radiance aside from lighting up corridors? Didn't seem to do much when I was shooting supernaturally-dark monsters with it.

AFAIK radiance is just for lighting corridors.

Nice char, though I'd be concerned about the lack of rFire. Do you actually use your bow? If not then ditch Belthronding to gain another point of Evasion.

I'd soon ditch the shield and take subtlety. Then again, this around where I usually die, so YMMV :)

Have you seriously not been able to find better body armor than that? :)

I second the ditching of Belthronding. If you can get a bit more strength, Amrod + rapid attack + subtlety could be great.

Watch out for anything heavily armored / crit resistant that hits hard -- deathblades are very hard to see sometimes, and accidentally running into one can ruin your day in a hurry. Glend will help in that situation. So will GTFOing :)

Good luck, and good game so far!

I just found Belthronding on the floor and ditched the Shortbow of Radiance because, well, the special ability seemed useless.

I'm carrying a Corselet of Venom's End, which is the best body armor I've found so far -- I just don't wear it when sneaking around.

I've been considering subtlety -- just really, really nervous about ditching the shield. Especially since inventory space is at a premium (too many weapon swaps) so I'd probably have to lose it altogether.

I waxed a deathblade earlier this afternoon without too much trouble -- but don't think I'll be tangling with them again if I can avoid it.

Definitely you were right about the fire resist. Got taken down to 3hp by a firedrake. Need to plug that hole in a hurry. So far have seen NO fire resist gear.

On the other hand, spanked Dagorhir and Scatha the Worm like they weren't even there, and have 11k xp burning a hole in my character sheet. Things are not bad.

Don't carry that much XP around at that depth. IMO get 20 stealth, more melee, take Subtlety and enjoy 1HKOing everything with Amrod :)

One other very cheap thing you could invest in is just enough song to get Song of Silence. Always helps a stealth character, and costs next-to-nothing.

If you're confident killing deathblades, try killing a few more and getting a light one that is +3 or more (always tricky). Delmereth is a great find if you can take it down.

YMMV, as always :)

If you encounter Delmereth, hack away with Glend. :)

Alas - I made it to 950' and died stupidly. I had gotten everything on the Stealth tree AND a source of fire resist...

Then investigating a vaulty-type area where it's that corridor lined with closets.... I accidentally moved into an Ancient Ruby Serpent and woke it up.

Just when I was backpedaling to run away, the Balrog of Fire came out of nowhere and penned me in. Despite having Xchange Places, I wasn't quick enough to get away before the Balrog flattened me.

Ah, tears... On the other hand, I'm pretty sure this build works well as long as I don't do something stupid. Like start opening closets before I make sure there's not a balrog in the hallway.
