       0 50 ft (Keen Senses)
     302 100 ft (Listen)
302 100 ft First floor needed running. Now second floor and
                      finally listen.
739 200 ft 150 ft. ended in run to the stair too.
834 200 ft Molds are a major annoyance without light.
880 200 ft Perception +1. Every point helps.
1,209 200 ft Encountered Gorgol, the Butcher
1,322 250 ft Orc warriors spawned at stairs. Dodged around and
                      descended.
   1,322 250 ft Con 3 = good idea.
   2,816 400 ft (Vanish)
3,047 400 ft drained STR by dart trap now -1
4,362 400 ft I already passed by the downstairs.
4,362 400 ft I hope it will be easier in later floors with rooming
                      monsters.
   4,528 450 ft (Lore-Keeper)
   4,528 450 ft (Lore-Master)
5,176 450 ft I have to remember that I should hug walls in lighted
                      rooms.
5,396 450 ft Stupid spider. I lure it out, but it goes back to the
                      corridor...
5,396 450 ft Are they stationary like dragons?
5,417 450 ft Can't find or access downstairs. Hug the stairs for
                      one up and down.
5,592 450 ft Fell through a false floor.
5,603 500 ft Somehow there is a perception penalty to darkness.
5,603 500 ft I hit more traps than I am used to with 18 perception.
5,641 500 ft I wish I would find some stealth equipment.
6,074 500 ft Almost killed by shadow bat. Saved by erratic
                      movement.
6,074 500 ft Sprinting or Lorien would help.
   6,443 550 ft (Dexterity)
6,990 550 ft My perception definitely is too low.
   6,990 550 ft Stealth 16, perception 18.
7,024 550 ft Not having Lorien severely limits me.
7,599 550 ft Encountered Gilim, the Giant of Eruman
7,747 550 ft Almost search whole floor and didn't find downstair.
7,747 550 ft Will hug stair < > and look again.
7,785 550 ft Encountered Ulfang the Black
8,323 600 ft Nearly run into werewolves while trailing a giant.
8,370 600 ft Too much rubble now - due to stair hugging.
8,370 600 ft (Song of Silence)
   8,370 600 ft (Precision)
8,654 600 ft Netherworms are awful. It makes the layout so hard to
                      recognize.
8,958 600 ft Try to steal chest from barrow wight.
   9,051 600 ft No chest.
   9,271 600 ft Oh cats.
9,284 600 ft Deathblade at 600 ft! (high value vault?)
9,311 600 ft I can sometimes barely hear it through the door. Not
                      more.
9,575 600 ft Please move, haired friend.
  10,183 650 ft (Channeling)

She was always afraid in bright sunlight... (Lightless challenge character)

Don't want to play with song early - maybe in the endgame if I get that far.

Playing in darkness changes stealth a lot - no wall hugging necessary, hiding in shadow mold darkness as strategy :) I hope I get a longsword of shadows or a shadow cloak.

When talking about adjacent tiles for stealth modifiers is it only orthogonally adjacent tiles or diagonals as well?

I guess Lore Master next for extra experience, then some more perception and stealth, then sprinting (it does indeed help to avoid bumping cats and later wolves)?

I think 'adjacent' always includes diagonals.

I am most scared of Grotesques. Once they see you they never fall unaware, can't be put to sleep and they move very quickly. I wonder whether I should try to dive past them or whether I can spot them from safe distance (which would that be?) with Listen and avoid them.

If I am really lucky I find Angrist and can slice them in a lighted area - but I wonder whether I find anything this way - it is really bad when you think about it, I could walk directly past Amrod or the boots of Taur-nu-Fuin or Luthien without noticing.

Staves of light would be useful for Grotesques, if you don't count that as cheating...

I'm pretty sure diagonals count, and moreover, that they *always* count when we say 'adjacent'.

Ok, this makes the darkness bonus to stealth (just by not having the negative modifiers) quite large, in fact it might be worth to do at times in a normal stealth run (I hope I read this correctly. When in darkness I am not in LoS regardless of doors, walls etc., right?)

Staff of light would at least stop them in a room and barely allow me to run away from grotesque a bit better. How well Listen works against them will be decisive - if I have a chance to avoid them, I will. Without higher perception I am not very optimistic, they have 10 stealth after all and don't roam around when undisturbed.

Forgot I am bleeding. Maybe I could have survived with healing herb followed by a lucky round and then terror but I doubt it - 1 hp missing from survival.

They came out of a stair and run into me while in a corridor - no chance to avoid them. Maybe I could have buffed up and use the staff a turn earlier.
